The double mono format is ideal for a 'library' reissue of this kind, and substantial chunks of the Furtwãngler reissue avalanche have appeared in this way. It simply involves recording in mono on each of the two stereo tracks of the CD in turn-for playback you can either use the balance control and listen through one speaker at a time, or you can buy an easy-to-fit adaptor for about £15.00 which will give you either channel through both speakers like a normal mono LP. The only disadvantage I have encountered is forgetting to switch back to the normal setting and wondering why the next CD sounds so dead; though if like me you have a little perverse streak you may be sorely tempted to use the normal setting for the double-length CD and indulge in some instant-Ives by playing both tracks simultaneously.
I can't pretend that wasn't a temptation at several points during the 8 hours 41 minutes of Smetana's complete piano works, all of them miniatures, bar one sonata and four or five programmatic fantasies and concert studies, and hardly any of them measuring up to the average piece of Chopin in terms of memorability. What kept me listening was first and foremost the quality of the playing. Vera Repkova was clearly no mere hack, although her reputation as the performer of "well over 10,000 compositions by more than 1,000 composers" might suggest just that. Nor is her playing remotely as severe as her photograph might lead one to believe. It is clean and rhythmically disciplined, but also wide ranging in colour and expression: it can be charming, passionate, and proud, and it radiates total belief in the music. The whole enterprise was clearly a labour of love.
Polkas account for around a quarter of the total-Smetana aimed to nationalize and idealize this dance-form much as Chopin had done for the Mazurka. Album Leaves and similarly titled miniatures figure prominently, and the Schumann influence is barely disguised here. In later works a more personal style gradually evolves, alongside a growing preoccupation with Liszt. By the time of the cycle Dreams (1874-5) or the second set of Czech Dances (1877-9) we are as likely to hear a Bohemian cousin of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies as a more obviously home-grown Furiant or Polka.
There are many touching moments even in the juvenilia (fragments and alternative versions are also included) and the shy poetry of the various Sketches and Characteristic pieces is ennobled by Vera RepkovA's sympathetic touch ("In the wood", the first of B57, is charmingly and appropriately accompanied by the distant sound of chirrupping birds). Some of the dances are genuinely catchy-Bettina's Polka and Vision at the ball could easily enjoy the status of lollipops if anyone cared to take them up-and there is much excellent music dotted around elsewhere in the set (the G sharp Concert Study "On the seashore", "Love" from the Bagatelles and Impromptus, and "The Hen" from the Czech Dances particularly appealed to me).
A single disc of carefully chosen excerpts would be an attractive proposition. As it is the complete set is destined more for the collection which aims to be something of a library-wherein it will occupy an honourable place. The recording is adequate, the pianos decent (though prone to thinness and detuning in the high treble), the playing of a quality beyond all reasonable expectation.

Depeche Mode are an English electronic band that formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The group consists of founders Dave Gahan (lead vocals, occasional songwriter since 2005), Martin Gore (guitar, keyboards, vocals, main songwriter since 1982), and Andy Fletcher (keyboards, bass guitar). Depeche Mode released their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Original band member Vince Clarke (keyboards, guitar, main songwriter from 1980 to 1981), left the band after the release of the album, leaving the band as a trio to record A Broken Frame, released the following year. Gore took over the lead songwriting duties and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, bass guitar, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band to fill Clarke's spot, establishing a line up that would continue for the next 13 years. Depeche Mode have been a trio again since 1995, when Wilder left.

One is always sorry to condemn a record merely because of the way the music is laid out on it but in this version. of the Schumann the division between the sides seems to me to be disastrously unhappy. The turn comes in the Intermezzo just before the woodwind anticipations of the finale's opening theme, an imaginative moment that is entirely spoilt by a break. I think no other version does this, whether on 10- or 12-inch, the work being all on one side or broken after the first movement.
For me it would have to be an altogether exceptional performance to make me ready to put up with this arrangement and though it is good, it is not that good. There is sympathetic playing in the first two movements but the Finale does get dull. Gulda's playing is clean and flowing but not exhilarating. I tried a bit of the Kempff and Lipatti records and found altogether more imaginative playing. Another disadvantage in this new disc' is a most unattractive sounding oboist in an otherwise good orchestral sound.
If the finale of the Schumann Concerto wants to have real brilliance in its playing, the Weber piece wants sheer panache,. and that is what Casadesus gives it. His playing of the first, agitated allegro is nothing like as clean as Gulda's is but I prefer it every time. And all the rest of his performance is a wonder, a different world of both pianism and imagination. His accompaniment, too, conducted by Szell is on the same plane.
I have no hesitation in leaving Casadesus's as still the best performance of the Weber and the Schumann situation remains un-, Changed (despite Decca's good recording). Lipatti, Kempff and Myra Hess are all extremely good in their different ways and all take both sides of a 10-inch. T.H.
