is a good mantra. the house needs some cleanup, but the flowers are blooming and it's time to enjoy the day first :) hope you enjoy yours!
brian created this arragement after we came back from the cherry blossom festival where we saw amazing ikebana on display. he was so inspired, he picked out the best from the yard and put it together. a few hours later, we realized that the hyacinth aroma gave us bad headaches, so it moved to the porch..{sigh!}
My sister Deanne Coles-Christensen is a gifted decorator. I helped her shoot these photos of her incredible home in Santa Fe that she’s sadly leaving after ten years. She's moving to Salt Lake City this week.
Deanne’s philosophy as an interior designer is to use her clients’ existing objects — those items with personal history and meaning — rather than purchase a bunch of new stuff. If you could use some of this beauty in your life, hire her. She’s now available for consultations and no job is too big or small.
i just took this out of the oven. it's one of my favorite things to bake, and while i rarely post food shots cos i'm not very good at them, i couldn't not post this.
here's the recipe, from the settlement cookbook.
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 1/2 cups canned or cooked/pureed pumpkin*
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
grated lemon rind (optional)
1/2 cup milk
1/ cup half-and-half
1 beaten egg white, for brushing (we don't bother)
1 9-inch pie shell, unbaked**
preheat oven to 425F. mix sugar, salt, and spices; add pumpkin, lightly beaten eggs, vanilla, and lemon rind, if desired. add the milk and half-and-half gradually (sometimes we just do half-and-half). if pumpkin is very moist, use less liquid. brush shell with egg white. add the filling, and bake for 20 minutes. reduce heat to 275F and bake 40 minutes longer or until knife inserted near edge of custard comes out clean. cool at room temperature.
*get a small sugar pumpkin, slice it in half, and scoop out the seeds. bake it at 350F for an hour, or until the meat comes off easily with a spoon. i sometimes put in a pat of butter and some brown sugar into the well of each half, cos i'm crazy like that. when it's done, i just scoop the meat into a measuring cup and mash it with a fork; i don't bother with a blender. this way some of the stringy texture remains in the pie custard. sort of like chunky mashed potatoes as opposed to smooth.
**i made a gingerbread crust, with 1 1/4 cups gingerbread crumbs, 1/4 cup sugar, and 5 tablespoons of melted butter. i stuck it in the oven while it was heating up for the pie, for about five minutes, to toast the crust.

Where does an admiral dine? In the great cabin aboard the HMS Victory!
This spacious cabin spans the width of the ship's stern. The day cabin is visible in the background. Note the bulkheads that can swing down from the ceiling to separate the two cabins.

my hubby is a high school teacher, and yesterday he had the day off. alas, i did not. when i asked him what he'd do with his day, he said he thought he'd head up to borders to replace our copy of serenity (a dvd we'd lent out, but we forgot to whom, and we really want to see it again, so whomever we lent it to can keep it, cos life's too short not to do stupid shit like that in my opinion, and could i possibly use any more tenses in this sentence?). ANYway, we had some extra coupons, and he said, "what should i do with these?" "i don't know, surprise me." and then i promptly forgot the entire conversation.
a long day ensued. meetings, tense ones -- meeting the boss's new boss, etc., then dinner with the boss and the boss's new boss (who was fabulous, in the end). at the restaurant, florian called. i told him i'd be home later than i'd thought. "well, look in your bag when you get home." (that is, my normal everyday bag, not the smaller bag i use when i have to do the business casual thing and go to the corporate office for meetings. girls will understand this.) ANYway, i figured it was something that had come in the mail that i needed to see.
this book -- this gloriously fabulous book -- was what was in my bag.
p.s. if'n yer interested, go here, plug "walker evans signs" into the little amazon.com widget, and go to town. not only will you get the book, but you'll also support my favorite non-profit radio station. wheeeee!
Cauliflower cheese, black pepper sausage with onions and Turkish peppers, and kale salad with apple and hazelnuts. Oh, and a bottle of champagne.
GONE--Incredible presence; incredible piece. A-frames are somewhat reminiscent of the Eiffel tower. Rugged, industrial-vintage style frames support a beautiful wood top.

there is a loneliness in this world so great
that you can see it in the slow movement of
the hands of a clock
people so tired
mutilated
either by love or no love.
people just are not good to each other
one on one.
the rich are not good to the rich
the poor are not good to the poor.
we are afraid.

Here is my yummy dinner that my husband had made, It has spinach, cabbage bacon, and a nice creamy sauce with salt and pepper.
Woodland Park, CO - This home was snuggled in a valley between forest covered hills with a clear view of Pikes Peak. This is the kind of backyard I could spend the afternoon watching the sun go by.
Yes, that really is what color my kitchen walls are. I like to call it neon tennis ball...and I love it.
We got a new table/chairs set for Christmas so I thought I'd post it! They're from Ikea. The table runner is from Kohl's. The print on the wall is from allposters.com.
We still need something over in that far corner but I don't know what yet. In the corner to the left of the print that you can't see is a tall black bookcase.
We just put the hardwoods in a few months ago. We got them SUPER cheap from lumber liquidators. It used to be dingy carpet, but these floors are so bright and clean.
