The pub claims that it was established in 1189 AD – the year that Richard the Lionheart became king and Pope Gregory VIII called for a Third Crusade to the Holy Land; however, there is no documentation to verify this date. Evidence suggests that caves in the rock against which the pub is built were used as a brewhouse for Nottingham Castle, and may date from around the time the castle was built in 1067.
The building rests against Castle Rock, upon which Nottingham Castle is built,
Taken in 1980 using a Canon AE1 and Fuji HR 24 film, and digitized using a Canon R5 in 2025.
The original film has stood up reasonably well to 45 years of aging.

Scanning with the ScanSnap S500.
I can comfortably put about 60 pages in the hopper - these are fairly thick pages. I can add more pages to the hopper before this set is done, to keep the scanner working continuously. Or, I can wander off and let it run out of pages - when I come back I will have the option to continue scanning into the same batch.
Scanning took 20 minutes. I was able to do other things during this time, as long as I refilled the hopper whenever it started running low.
Let me also say the ScanSnap is, quite simply, the best scanner anywhere near this price range. It is compact (when folded up it is about the size of a football!) and very solidly built. It scans both sides of the paper in one pass, makes almost no noise, and it almost never misfeeds. When it does, it opens like a clamshell and the paper just falls through - you never find yourself grabbing a peice of paper from one end and pulling against resistance or tearing the paper. I have used several 'all-in-one' print/scan/fax devices with flatbeds and sheetfeeders. The ScanSnap kicks their butts clear out of the park.
You also get a copy of Acrobat 7 and ABYY FineReader (OCR software) with your ScanSnap, all for about $450. Prices and versions may have changed since I bought mine. I expect this to last a decade or more - the moving/wearable parts are replaceable. Unlike the all-in-one devices which, once they broke, were not repairable.

Hostel run by the Salvation Army. I stayed there for two nights (didn't allow any longer) in summer 1968. York House moved to Longford Street Little some time ago. The site is now used by The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
