Part of a series of gestural sketches of dancers in situ, done while watching dance students practice their craft. They are quick 1 to 2 minute sketches using a stylus and tablet with a laptop and Adobe Illustrator. All were done at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver, Canada as part of the Salon Series.

Original work on Procreate.

Sketch club on iPad!

Doodling around with Clip Studio Paint...

On Monday, a flat tire in Boston led to several hours spent waiting at the auto dealership to get my tire fixed or replaced. I was very impatient, but decided to draw on my iPhone with my new Procreate program. It was a good way to pass the time, and yesterday I posted the digital drawing that I made. Procreate for iPhone captures a video as you draw, so here it is. You will see quite a struggle as I tried to figure out how to adjust the size of the brushes. But the video has a happy ending, as the "smudge" tool saves the day.

Xenomorphic - a trilogy of unique blends and tones and colours and shapes crafted from moods. In an unusual form; having a strange form.

This one was a bit of a challenge to do. I originally wanted to do a sketch of Mera from Justice League, but ended up doing one of her from the upcoming Aquaman movie instead. What made this one even more challenging was trying to draw the character based on the promo picture completely from memory. I think this one turned out well even if I didn’t get Amber Heard’s likeness 100% accurate.

Illustrated by KR. Mera and Aquaman are properties of DC Comics.

While I am not familiar with the entirety of this man's work, (20+ studio albums, 100's of singles, cult films, etc. are a lot to catch up with) what I did know was nothing but pure artistry, often strange and bizarre but beautiful and authentic.

I will always have admiration for artists that challenged the norm, that broke boundaries and took people out of their comfort zones, he inspired many if not most of all my favourite artists, and for that I am eternally grateful.

But why aren't I painting while I wait?

This is part of my Daily Portrait Project, in which I make a non-photographic image of myself every day and post it on the web. This series of self-portraits can be viewed in it's entirety at studiojuliakay.com/portraitproject.

Artist-in-Residence Sarah Comfort appreciates this specific, familiar graphic quality of digital imagery. “If you look at my lines, you can see that they’re pixelated,” she says. “It’s normal for a digital image to try to fool the eye into thinking it’s something else, something real. But I’m not trying to hide that these were created on a computer.” Read more about Sarah on our blog: bit.ly/sarah-comfort

This is another drawing I did a while back.

The first image is the hand drawing, the second is the watercolor painting (unfinished).

In the third image I used Photoshop to recreated every element of the illustration and this is the final digital rendition.
