It is always a good sign to find a nesting aggreatation of solitary digger bees, genus Anthophora. They extend their underground burrows aboveground in the form of turrets or tunnels like these.

Diggers Hard at Work

A digger wasp that I fished out of my pool. As she dried out, it turned out she was a marvelous metallic gold. Might be Sphex ermineus.

Repole Stable’s Digger (inside) led nearly every step and held off favored Pashito the Che in the closing strides Saturday afternoon to win Aqueduct Racetrack’s $65,000 Gravesend Handicap by a nose.

Ridden by Rosie Napravnik, the 5-year-old son of Yonaguska went to the front right after the break, setting fractions of 23.84 and 47.02 with Pashito the Che in close pursuit. Opening up by daylight as the field of seven headed for home, Digger began drifting out in deep stretch but had enough left to turn back the 3-5 favorite’s late flurry, completing the six furlongs in 1:11.66 over an inner track rated fast.
