Our waitress gave us each a "digestive"...apparently in Europe, many people get a shot of hard liquor after dinner to help digest their food. It was GROSS!

"Pizza like it oughta beâ (*pronouned in thick Brooklyn accent*). This is the premise of Londonâs first NY Fold, which can be found on Charing Cross. What is the NY Fold? The traditional style of how pizza is eaten in NYC (no forks or knives required, or ALLOWED). You basically take the slice, fold it in half, and then make it disappear using your digestive system. The type of pizzas these guys create are in the style you may have heard described as âpizza pieâ - which means generous sized slices, generous helpings of toppings (American style portions: doggy bags are OK!). And generous people too, the staff and owners are turbo friendly.
This style of pizza is rather different distinct from the Neapolitan, wood fired oven pizza styles that are so popular in London right now. Not quite as thick as the âChicago styleâ deep pan pizza (nor as thin as a Neapolitan) - NY Fold claim that their dough ageing process (48 hours, minimum) allows the yeast more time to break down the complex starches and thus making the pizza more digestible. I dunno if thatâs true or not but itâs a bloody good pizza so Iâm not going to complain.
Me and Tasting Britainâs Dom followed the trail of raving Trip Advisor reviews down and were not disappointed. This branch of NY Fold is run by Michael and Annabel Wheeler, and is, perhaps the first of many. Michael and Annabel are expat New Yorkers who found it difficult to get pizza in the style of their home state. If you come here you will likely be served by one of them, and they are very nice people. The couple got in touch with pizza virtuoso Bruno DiFabio - a man who has been described as âa pizza prodigy from the age of 10â. Bruno is a âmaster pizzaiolo' with ten artisan pizzerias and at least six world pizza championship titles to his name.
Pizzas/pies come in 16 inch & 20 inch, sizes. They claim a 16-inch is plenty for three people - which is probably true. As you can imagine, they also sell by the slice for takeaway. 2-3 slices should probably fill the average sized, non raveous human. Non pizza related things on NY Foldâs menu include calzone and lasagna balls (which are basically balls of lasagna in a panko coating - oi vey!). As for drinks? More extensive than you think. Italian wines, US & UK beers (draft and bottle). Plus infinite refills of soda (from an actual soda machineâ¦serve yourself!).
All in all, an unpretentious dining experience, economically priced (these are BIG slices with lots of toppings), with a more extensive . If you like American style pizza, or trying to eat a slice thatâs bigger than your head - I advise you head down and check them out. Youâre in for a good time...
