The Batten Kill Railroad was and is a great railroad to visit for that classic short line experience. In a view from 20-plus years ago, Batten Kill's pair of Alco RS-3s gingerly tread through the village of Cambridge, NY. The scene was backlit under threatening skies, but still worth exposing a few frames of slide film as the units were briefly throttled up. It's not easy differentiating between the adjacent lawns and the BKRR right of way!

Indigo Buntings migrate at night, using the stars for guidance. Researchers demonstrated this process in the late 1960s by studying captive Indigo Buntings in a planetarium and then under the natural night sky. The birds possess an internal clock that enables them to continually adjust their angle of orientation to a star—even as that star moves through the night sky.

This is second species of nomad bee hovering menacingly over the garden mining bee colony. These have varying amounts of red on the abdomen and could be one of two very similar species - Nomada flava or Nomada panzeri. I've spent ages poring over photographs but can't differentiate them with confidence. Consequently, I've started using the iRecotd recording category 'Nomada flava/panzeri'!!

A big swell tonight.. at least 2.5m and high tide so I went to Mona Vale pool for the first time. The pool is some distance from shore and has its own lighting. There are two Rockpools - one suitable for toddlers and a larger pool measuring 30 metres for bigger kids and adults

This European butterfly is as beautiful as it is common in the central and Southern part of the butterfly's range. It will often rest with wings open showing the orange and black pattern for which fritillaries are noted. As you can see, here, it is displaying it's equally striking and impressive underside wing. It is generally these underwing patterns that are used to differentiate between the many fritillary species.

During my trip through the Rockies, I knew I was going to hit many of the spots that others already have photographed to death, so I went in to each location hoping to find something different. With each iconic location, I tried to find something that would set myself apart from the pack… And ultimately, I hoped this would helped me develop some personal style.

I don’t know if I accomplished this, or simply took weaker photos than the obvious compositions, but I feel pretty happy with this shot of Peyto Lake. I felt like this is a unique approach (with regard to foreground), and I was especially excited for the conditions that I was lucky enough to capture.

I perched myself in this exact spot for several hours before the sun went down and there were so many tourists I could not possibly count. The nice thing about a storm rolling in, is the tourists all scattered like cockroaches… which allowed me to get a nice clean foreground. This was actually shot vertically with 11mm, so there was considerably more foreground, but when I got back to the real world I could see that the overwhelming essence of the scene was the storm and decided to crop out most of the foreground. Serves me right for trying to hard to differentiate.

Once I started seeing this light peeking through those mountains I started firing shots as quickly as the camera could keep up. I did get pounded with some rain almost seconds after this all came to be, but it was more than worth it.

This was a number of exposures, due to the focus stacking of the rocks in the foreground. After that, there was 1 exposure for the sky (I picked the best out of the many exposures I took of the changing sky).

Tundra Swans can be differentiated from Trumpeter Swans by the yellow spot on their lores.

It is almost impossible to differentiate between the young males and females Satin Bowerbirds. That morning many birds seemed to be just fooling around and I caught this one swinging on a thin eucalyptus twig.

Living in the Pennines I see lots of Dippers. But they seem to prefer shady, wooded rivers to ones on the open hillside. So I was really pleased to stumble across a pair that were nesting behind a small waterfall in full sunshine out on the open moorland. I sat quietly and the Dippers came and went with nesting material. You can see on this photograph that below the white bib is a band of chestnut/orange that differentiates British Dippers from their black-bellied Continental cousins.

Happy New Year Everyone.

1956 Packard Caribbean

For the 1956 model year, the Caribbean was designated as a separate luxury series, and a hardtop model was added. Trim styling differences between the 1955 and 1956 cars were minimal, with new tri-tone exterior color combinations the most visible differentiation. The Grille textures changed to match those used on concurrent Patricians. The rear treatment, featuring Packard's cathedral-style taillights was continued. The headlights also received slightly more exaggerated brows. Unique new interiors featured reversible seat cushions with cloth on one side and leather on the other. The thick foam rubber cushions eliminated coil springs in the seats, preventing sagging, while the covers could be removed for cleaning.

The 374 cu in (6.1 L) V8 engine included Packard's "Ultramatic" push-button automatic transmission. The engine features dual four-barrel carburetors and a 10:1 compression ratio to develop 310 hp (231 kW; 314 PS) and with 405 pound force-feet (549 N⋅m) of torque, the highest-rated power among U.S. automobiles. A 12-volt system was introduced, and electrically operated door locks were new. All Packards offered a new limited-slip rear differential.

Total model year production equaled 263 hardtops and 276 convertibles, with the convertible being the most expensive Packard model listing at US$5,995 ($69,335 in 2024 dollars).

The Moon.........Hand held photo.

Here's a thought. The Moon has about the same size diameter as Australia or USA at our widest point coast to coast.

(Wikipedia)

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite. It orbits at an average distance of 384,400 km (238,900 mi), about 30 times the diameter of Earth. Tidal forces between Earth and the Moon have synchronized the Moon's orbital period (lunar month) with its rotation period (lunar day) at 29.5 Earth days, causing the same side of the Moon to always face Earth. The Moon's gravitational pull—and, to a lesser extent, the Sun's—are the main drivers of Earth's tides.

In geophysical terms, the Moon is a planetary-mass object or satellite planet. Its mass is 1.2% that of the Earth, and its diameter is 3,474 km (2,159 mi), roughly one-quarter of Earth's (about as wide as the United States from coast to coast). Within the Solar System, it is the largest and most massive satellite in relation to its parent planet, the fifth largest and most massive moon overall, and larger and more massive than all known dwarf planets. Its surface gravity is about one sixth of Earth's, about half of that of Mars, and the second highest among all Solar System moons, after Jupiter's moon Io. The body of the Moon is differentiated and terrestrial, with no significant hydrosphere, atmosphere, or magnetic field. It formed 4.51 billion years ago, not long after Earth's formation, out of the debris from a giant impact between Earth and a hypothesized Mars-sized body called Theia.

The lunar surface is covered in lunar dust and marked by mountains, impact craters, their ejecta, ray-like streaks, rilles and, mostly on the near side of the Moon, by dark maria ("seas"), which are plains of cooled lava. These maria were formed when molten lava flowed into ancient impact basins. The Moon is, except when passing through Earth's shadow during a lunar eclipse, always illuminated by the Sun, but from Earth the visible illumination shifts during its orbit, producing the lunar phases. The Moon is the brightest celestial object in Earth's night sky. This is mainly due to its large angular diameter, while the reflectance of the lunar surface is comparable to that of asphalt. The apparent size is nearly the same as that of the Sun, allowing it to cover the Sun completely during a total solar eclipse. From Earth about 59% of the lunar surface is visible over time due to cyclical shifts in perspective (libration), making parts of the far side of the Moon visible.

The Moon has been an important source of inspiration and knowledge for humans, having been crucial to cosmography, mythology, religion, art, time keeping, natural science, and spaceflight. The first human-made objects to fly to an extraterrestrial body were sent to the Moon, starting in 1959 with the flyby of the Soviet Union's Luna 1 and the intentional impact of Luna 2. In 1966, the first soft landing (by Luna 9) and orbital insertion (by Luna 10) followed. On July 20, 1969, humans for the first time stepped on an extraterrestrial body, landing on the Moon at Mare Tranquillitatis with the lander Eagle of the United States' Apollo 11 mission. Five more crews were sent between then and 1972, each with two men landing on the surface. The longest stay was 75 hours by the Apollo 17 crew. Since then, exploration of the Moon has continued robotically, and crewed missions are being planned to return beginning in the late 2020s.

Here we see two examples in the life of the Giant Sequoia trees of the Sierra Nevada.

What differentiates these trees from their coastal relatives is they are shorter and thicker.

Sequoias are among the longest lived things on the earth, some in this grove began their lives before the birth of Christ.

It is a humbling experience to walk among these groves and to experience the majesty of these incredible trees as they tower toward the heavens above the comparatively diminutive me.

The foreground tree has clearly been fire damaged, but not been killed. Sequoias have fire retardant bark and actually require fire to open their cones so they can germinate. The background tree is in the condition that most commonly ends the life of these giants, having fallen over.

Europe's grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) originated in North America, where they are known as eastern grey squirrels (to differentiate from western grey squirrels). They eat large seeds, flowers, buds, fruits, fungi, some insects and occasionally bird eggs.

They were first introduced into England, in a concerted way, in 1876, and through rapidly growing population and further introductions they spread to the rest of Great Britain by the early to mid-20th century. The eastern grey squirrel was introduced to Continental Europe in 1948 and has quickly taken advantage of Europe's food sources, habitats and lack of predators for grey squirrels.

One of the most common puffball fungi found in meadows, Lycoperdon pratense looks rather like a baby Giant Puffball when viewed from the top, although in the early stages of development its skin is scurfy whereas its larger cousins have smooth skins. Both the Meadow Puffball and the Giant Puffball are edible, so confusing the two is not disastrous. To differentiate these puffballs look underneath: the Meadow Puffball has a stump-like stem whereas there is no stem on a Giant Puffball.

I believe this might have been a fish crow as opposed to an american crow. If so, it was a lifer ! Apparently, the way to identify it best to differentiate between the two types of crows, as I found out afterwards, is by their call

When sheep are grazed on common land, different flocks can get mixed together, so farmers use paint marks to differentiate their own sheep from others. If you look closely you can see some fine wires running from the tips of the tail planes to the mid-rear fuselage on each side. These were an early form of 'friend or foe' detection; a radio signal from them helped differentiate defending RAF aircraft from others on the crude radar screens of the time.

This aircraft has a 'c' type wing, sometimes called the 'universal' wing which had provision for up to four 20mm cannon and four 0.303 Browning machine guns, although because of weight restrictions, not all could be carried at the same time without seriously degrading the aircraft performance. It is not uncommon to see two of the cannons capped off, as here. The red tape over the machine gun ports was to prevent debris from muddy airfields being blown back into the guns from the propeller while the engine was running on the ground. Wet mud could jam the guns. Of course, the first shots would go straight through the tape.

The outer machine guns were often considered to be not all that effective - the wings would vibrate when they were firing, so an ever widening cone of bullets would issue forth reducing the effectiveness on the target. The 'e' wing, which many later Spitfires sported, was a simplified 'c' wing, had the outer four machine guns bays deleted and could carry heavier machine guns and/or cannon in the four inner bays.

About an hour after taking Wing tips on the clearing (I), an image I saw as a black and white image before taken it, I decided to try capturing a colour image with a slightly different composition to differentiate if from Wing tips on the clearing (I).

Out and about one day not far from home, yet in the higher elevations, we heard a distinct call "tschick-adee" repeatedly. About the same time, we saw some flighty movement getting closer and closer to us. Eventually, we encountered the quite adorable juniper titmouse. Interestingly, this titmouse species was differentiated from the Plain titmouse (into Juniper and Oak) reflecting their distict habitat where they reside. Though I had never seen one before (that I'm aware of), I just knew what it was by its cute crest on its head. It was quite curious about us and posed for some time for me. :-)

While I've been a bit envious of my friends still living in FL with their images recently being shared of SHC colt babies, roseate spoonbills, and easier access burrowing owls, I have to remind myself of species like this that call Colorado home. So darned cute as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for stopping by to view. Happy weekend to all.

I am identifying this as a Queen Butterfly. It is easier to differentiate Queens from Monarchs in this dorsal view. Correction or confirmation will be appreciated.

a-z-animals.com/blog/queen-butterfly-vs-monarch-what-are-....

A queen butterfly and a monarch are both among the most popular and well-studied butterflies on the planet. They have a striking resemblance, making it a bit difficult to tell the two species apart, especially when their wings are closed. They are also very similar during their caterpillar phase, having the same coloration. These butterflies also lay eggs on milkweed.

Although they are so much alike, the queen butterfly has white spots on its hind wings that distinguish it from the monarch. You can easily tell the two species apart when their wings are open. Queen butterflies have a darker orange color as compared to monarchs. The size of their wingspan differs as well. The monarch has a larger wingspan compared to that of the queen butterfly.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_(butterfly)

The queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus) is a North and South American butterfly in the family Nymphalidae with a wingspan of 80–85 mm (3+1⁄8–3+3⁄8 in).[3] It is orange or brown with black wing borders and small white forewing spots on its dorsal wing surface, and reddish ventral wing surface fairly similar to the dorsal surface. The ventral hindwings have black veins and small white spots in a black border. The male has a black androconial scent patch on its dorsal hindwings.[4] It can be found in meadows, fields, marshes, deserts, and at the edges of forests.[4][5]

The blue tit is one of the most colourful and recognisable birds in the UK garden. Their bold mixture of blue, yellow, white and green differentiate them from the crowd. As with the great tit, as it heads towards the colder months, blue tits gather together with other groups to search for food.

The Lesser Scaup is one of the most abundant of diving duck species, which can be differentiated from the Greater by the shape of the head and the size among other things. There numbers are on the decline but they are not listed as vulnerable yet. The mainly migrate south along the Mississippi flyway but a few do venture east.

The Damselfly (Suborder Zygoptera) is an insect in the Order Odonata. Damselflies are similar to dragonflies, but the adults can be differentiated by the fact that the wings of most damselflies are held along, and parallel to, the body when at rest. Furthermore, the hindwing of the damselfly is essentially similar to the forewing, while the hindwing of the dragonfly broadens near the base, caudal to the connecting point at the body. Damselflies are also usually smaller, weaker fliers than dragonflies, and their eyes are separated.

Damselflies undergo incomplete metamorphosis, with an aquatic nymphal stage. The female lays eggs in water, sometimes in underwater vegetation, or high in trees in bromeliads and other water-filled cavities. Nymphs are carnivorous, feeding on daphnia, mosquito larvae, and various other small aquatic organisms. The gills of damselfly nymphs are large and external, resembling three fins at the end of the abdomen. After moulting several times, the winged adult emerges and eats flies, mosquitoes, and other small insects. Some of the larger tropical species are known to feed on spiders, hovering near the web and plucking the spider from its nest.

Since people are so into my real life & other do ... know that no matter what kind of relationship we have know this ... it's a good thing we do have a toxic relationship..

5 reason why.

These are the 5 most important things you should pay attention to in order to differentiate true love and toxic love.

Self-development

In true love, this is a very important thing for both partners because both should want the best for each other.

On the other hand, in toxic love, the primary interest is the relationship and the partners are more interested in the superficial aspects of the relationship.

Separate interests

In true love, both partners have different interests and they are both comfortable with that. Whether it is different friends, goals or hobbies, they will be comfortable with spending time separated to do the things they love.

In toxic love, the partners are too involved in each other’s loves, and will never go anywhere separated. They feel dependent on each other.

Individuality

In true love, both partners are comfortable with accepting and cherishing their partner’s individuality.

In toxic love, they are trying to change the partner to be a completely different person just to suit their needs and fit their image of the perfect partner.

Intimacy

In true love, partners are completely comfortable with their intimacy because their relationship is based on love, trust, care, and friendship.

In a toxic relationship, you may feel that s*x is too much of a pressure, and it can even make you feel insecure because you don’t want to do something your partner requires you and you are not comfortable with telling them.

Conversation

In true love, partners will try to make every conversation constructive, whether they agree or disagree about something because they want to understand each other and also help them.

In toxic love, most conversations are based on blaming, manipulating or defending your partner.

A well known reply by Hove residents when asked if they live in Brighton is "Hove Actually" a humorous retort differentiating themselves from the louder renown "Brighton" side of the city.

This beach exhibition from Brighton and Hove Camera Club forms part of a wider initiative to bring uplifting, fun and positive photography to all, but especially to those who need it most.

They are hoping to get photographs from the exhibition displayed on walls of public-serving organisations, such as doctors surgeries, children's hospitals, nursing homes, mental health and well-being clinics and similar settings.

I always seem to have trouble differentiating between the coopers hawk and the sharp shinned hawk. I think this is a juvenile coopers hawk but if you think otherwise chime in please. Withheld posting this one from last week because the light was a bit harsh. After a bit of processing however it didn't look half bad.

The scops owl is the smallest European owl after the pygmy owl; it reaches the size of a blackbird. The species is divided into six subspecies, which are, however, not very differentiated. In addition to the nominate form, there are also O.

Eastern (A. tigrinum) and barred (A. mavortium) tigers are difficult to differentiate. They are most readily separated by pattern and coloration. IN GENERAL, eastern tigers have more spots and small blotches scattered about the dorsum and sides. These markings are usually orangish/coppery yellow to greenish brown. Barred tigers typically have bars, large blotches or spots that are larger and fewer in number than those of the eastern tiger salamander. In the barred tigers, these markings are usually pale to lemon yellow. That said, there is considerable variation both within each respective "species" and even within populations. I have seen images of eastern tiger salamanders that are indistinguishable from barred tiger salamanders and vice versa.

Herring Gull and Western Grebe for this evening.

In Alberta Herring Gulls breed farther north of Edmonton and are usually seen around here in spring and fall migration times. It was great to find this single individual at this time of year. The pink legs and lack of black on the bill help to differentiate this species from the Ring-billed Gull. and the pale iris helps to separate it from the California Gull. Herring Gulls are also obviously larger when seen with other local Gull species.

Ceský Krumlov, translated sometimes to Czech Crumlaw, is a small city in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic where Ceský Krumlov Castle is located. Old Ceský Krumlov is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was given this status along with the historic Prague castle district.

The city is named Ceský Krumlov ("Bohemian Crumlaw") to differentiate it from Moravský Krumlov in South Moravia.

Construction of the town and castle began around 1240 by the Vítkovci at a ford in the Vltava River, at an important trade route in Bohemia. It was first mentioned in 1253 as Chrumbenowe. A legend says that the name derives from the German "Krumme Aue" which can be translated as "crooked meadow".

In 1302 the town and castle were acquired by the House of Rosenberg. The majority of inhabitants were German at that time. For 1336 it can be expected that Czechs were only a small minority, who had their own priest.

In late 15th century, when gold was found next to the town, German miners came to settle, which shifted the ethnic balance even more. In the parochial church the sermons were preached in Czech until 1788, when St. Jošt Church was abolished.
