Nandita is blazing fast with the use of her dictionary

This dictionary caused our school board to see red. In 1977, while I was the assistant editor and photo editor for our high school, our small town made national headlines for banning this dictionary from the school library. Our paper and story became a freedom of speech issue. The dictionary contained swear words and definitions of some synonyms like -to bed-. I still have this dictionary we used for the cover photo of the issue.

Funny how these banned words seem so innocuous today. I don’t use these words often as I guess I still find them offensive, but then again I’m old.

Well, it's grown a bit. Somewhat.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, Jiu-Jitsu is, “an art of weaponless fighting employing holds, throws, and paralyzing blows to subdue or disable an opponent.” Capital strives to ensure that what we teach is the complete art of Jiu-Jitsu, that our standards remain high (no buying belts here), and that our environment is for everyone (safe, friendly and fun.) More than 120 of our Capital family members were at the December 2017 Promotions Seminars & Ceremony, and we am proud beyond words that our team is strong.

I mostly took a picture of this for the translation of "I think there's an animal in our cabin".

This package contains 40 pages from various dictionaries, some vintage, some modern. Some pages have small images, others are text only. Page size ranges from 4" x 5 1/2" to 8 1/4" x 10 7/8".

I guess this is what happens when you change your studies. I studied English & Swedish for 2 years and needed these dictionaries. Now I no longer need them and I needed something to prop up the table.

Found this in the Atlanta airport. Good to see someone interested in moving up.

The Shetland Dictionary wis set furth in 1979 an this ootgie is fae The Shetland Times Ltd (ISBN 0-900662-93-X).

 

This dictionar gies the by-leid, or dialect, as spoken in the Shetland Isles.

Being able to find and understand the information contained in a dictionary is an important skill students should be taught. Unfortunately, language teachers often neglect doing so.
