If you should go to the spot where I took this photo you won't see anything but sand and sea. This was a set for filming an episode of Dexter. Here one day, gone the next.

TRIPLE-PURPOSE CATTLE for Milk, Draft & Beef

Dexter cattle for Milk

There are many accounts of Dexter milk production reported over the years and those can be found in the books available from the ADCA. It is evident from the literature that Dexter cattle produce plenty of milk for most families. In herds which have been selected for milk production, yields of 3,600 liters per lactation have been reported. To convert that to gallons, divide by 3.79 which results in 950 gallons. If the lactation lasted for 305 days as it does on most dairies in the U.S., the cows would be producing about 3 gallons per day. The milk in that report had 4.1% butterfat content.

Reports from individuals who milk a cow for family use suggest that the production level varies with breeding and feed, but is 1.5 to 2.5 gallons per day. In a survey done by the ADCA Science Committee, some owners shared milk with a calf, while others took all of the milk for family use, so it was difficult to get an exact amount of milk produced. However, in each case the owners were pleased with the quantity and quality of the milk from Dexters.

An ox is merely a steer with a good education, and Dexters do educate well. They are smart, which means that they can pick up a bad habit as quickly as a good one, but this is not generally a problem as long as the ox teamster is always smarter than the oxen. Consistency, fairness, and patience are important with training cattle. It is advisable to begin handling and training the calves within days of their birth. Halter breaking, voice commands, and learning to wear a yoke usually begin early. Then it's time and practice, and there is no substitute for spending hours with your cattle, and no greater pleasure than spending time with your Dexters.

Dexters are agile, trainable, sturdy, little oxen. The larger ones are able to pull a walking plow, logs, and wagons. For the smaller steers, loads certainly have to scaled down. Dexters are intelligent and willing to learn. Their spunk makes them want to pull and do the work asked of them. Putting lots of time into training a yoke of oxen makes any teamster want the pair to last for years. Dexters do generally tend to be blessed with longevity, so this is another plus for them as oxen.

For the serious ox puller, Dexters can stay competitive in the lower weight classes for their entire lives and thus have an advantage over younger, less experienced yokes of cattle.

I took this photo on November 21, 2015 when Gerry and I were in Home Depot and the Sarasota Sheriff's Animal Services were there with some of the dogs who require adoption. I do believe that dogs are part of our family and we should treat them as such always. Dexter was one of the beautiful dogs they had with them, friendly and happy if anyone is interested in him or any other dog the Sheriff's Animal Services are located on 8451 Bee Ridge Road, 3 miles east of I-75 and their phone number is: 941-861-9523. Their website is:

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo💜💜

He is a beautiful boy and Kelsea’s “house brother”. He is 2 ½ times her size weighing 19 lbs. of muscle, he is not fat. Kelsea weighs 8 lbs. They get along so well, I watched them playing in the yard today, sometimes his size can overcome her but she is so agile that she manages to escape and hide in spots he cannot get into. He hunts by night while she sleeps on a duvet at my feet. He truly is a gentle giant that does not like the camera; can you tell from his expression?

Dexter Galway-Ireland

I was walking up Yonge Street in downtown Toronto and he came past me on his bicycle. His unique look caught my eye and I regretted his having passed by before I could react. He got caught by a red light, however, and I had a second chance. I introduced myself and my photo project and he said “I’ve got some time to kill. I’ll do it.” He got off his bike and we started walking up a side street to look for a location. We shook hands. Meet Dexter.

I thought his urban look would work well with graffiti but we weren’t in a part of town known for much graffiti. Just then I spotted some on a parking lot wall and we took a few photos there. The first photo was of him hoisting his bike up on his shoulder. “Should I get rid of the bike?” I said “No. Let’s do one with it on your shoulder like that.”

Dexter said he had recently done some photos for a friend who was helping market the clothing and accessories he puts together from “dumpster diving” (searching through waste bins around the city). He was clearly comfortable with being photographed and we wandered into a nearby laneway where we found a garage door which served as another good background.

Dexter was a bit of a “character” who seemed to enjoy the attention. He said he’s a bit of an alcoholic and although he would do the photos anyway, he sure would appreciate a couple of dollars to buy a beer to get his day started. I said I could probably help him out which I did. He went on to tell me that he is 52 (that surprised me) and was born in New Brunswick in eastern Canada “but I’ve lived in a lot of places.” His attitude toward life is “Don’t rush but treat each day like it’s going to be your last. If something gets you upset, don’t react for a half hour. If you’re still angry, count up to 5 and down again from 5.” He said he has cancer but that he doesn’t let it stop him from living life to the fullest. He enjoys putting together fashions from things others throw away. He said he is in chemo treatment now and surprises the doctors because even though he has “practically no white cells” (from the chemo) he hardly ever catches a cold.

Dexter had some poses he wanted to do to show off his unique fashion sense and when it was time to say goodbye, he wished me well. I told him I hoped his treatment is successful and he said “I don’t go down easily. I’ve been through a lot and I don’t quit. As if to prove the point, he told me he’s been in the military and served a tour in Afghanistan where he was wounded. He showed me scars below his collarbone which he said were from an IED (improvised explosive device). He has scars on the side of his head and said he has a steel plate in his skull – another souvenir of his military service. When my time comes, it’s not going to be in a hospital. It’s going to be out on the streets having a good time.” I told him he certainly didn’t look like he was ready to stop living and he agreed with me.

Thanks, Dexter, for taking time to chat and for being part of The Human Family on Flickr. I wish you well.

Dexter giving me a perfect pose. He is such a great cat... one of those dog/cats. By that I mean he comes when called, chases paper balls and brings them back. He's also very loving and affectionate. Great all around cat.=)

This is the moment a deer, out of curiosity walked up to my friend with her dog! Dexter, the boxer, was very well behaved and didn't make a sound!

The Dexter Grist Mill was first built in 1637 in what is now the heart of the Sandwich historic district. Why go to the supermarket for cornmeal when you can get it freshly ground at a 17th-century grist mill? Organic corn from Vermont is ground daily from May through September. A 2-pound cloth bag costs $5, but they sometimes have a two-for-one sale.
