it was interesting that, after she saw these pix, my friend gave me a link to a facebook group, which was established to against hawks on college campuses preying squirrels.
Herring Gull ~ Larus Argentatus ~ Goéland argenté ~ Feeding on a Gastropod, carries it up high in the air, dropping it on an empty parking lot, picking and devouring follows on the ground ~ Amagansett, Long Island, New York.
The way he eats, you'd think I never feed him. I feed him twice a day, sometimes more. (Whenever he goes in his crate, he gets food and usually a treat. It's shameless bribery that helps me get him out of his cage for vet visits or cleanings.) Regardless, he always acts like he's starving. One of his funny little quirks.
After four years my Verbascum in my garden really became established and has done really well with multiple spires of flowers attracting all kinds of stuff although i was disappointed that for the first time there were no Mullein moth caterpillars on it this year. I noticed though that suddenly the plant began to look very bedraggled and closer inspection revealed why, no less than 35 Striped Lychnis caterpillars were devouring the flowers and leaves and within a couple of days had skeletonised the whole plant. This was a nice surprise, a nationally scarce species in my little garden. I made a mad dash to the garden centre where i managed to find a potted dwarf hybrid Verbascum to which they quickly transferred themselves luckily. I've taken half of them into my care, some i'll leave to their own devices, some have already wandered off overnight to pupate, we wont put all our eggs in one basket. I have no idea if they have been parasitised, i would be surprised if they escaped the attention of either Tachinid or Braconid what with them being so obvious and later so exposed on the skeletal remains of the host mullein for a day or so but we live in hope and at least now they are safe a parasite proof home.
