Science fiction author John Scalzi as a/the devil. Image altered by, well, John Scalzi. The man likes doing stuff like this.
Located between Gold Hill and Silver City, the Devil's Gate was a large narrow reef of metamorphic rock that served as the main landmark for travelers arriving at the Comstock Lode, giving
"a forcible impression of the unhallowed character of the place," J. Ross Browne - 1860.
In 1850 John Orr and Nickolas Kelly discovered a gold nugget near this spot, launching the first wave of miners to the area. During the Paiute War it held a small fort with fake cannons.

If the devil wears pajama's, i'm fairly certain they'd be red. He's ready to jump out of them, too.
(Sold.) (And all i remember is that they took it from the 2006 fall Coyote festival. That weekend was kind of a blur...)

Devils Tower is America's first national monument, declared such in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. It was a little out of our way but so impressive that ultimately it was worth the extra hour on the road.
Numerous dust devil tracks can be seen on top of the ejecta of an unnamed crater in Syria Planum. Image information: VIS instrument. Latitude -8.6N, Longitude 257.6E. 18 meter/pixel resolution. Note: this THEMIS visual image has not been radiometrically nor geometrically calibrated for this preliminary release. An empirical correction has been performed to remove instrumental effects. A linear shift has been applied in the cross-track and down-track direction to approximate spacecraft and planetary motion. Fully calibrated and geometrically projected images will be released through the Planetary Data System in accordance with Project policies at a later time.
The Devil's Punchbowl is an area south of Guildford and is a natural amphitheatre. Legend has it that the devil in his spare time hurled lumps of earth at the god Thor to annoy him. The hollow he scooped the earth out of became the Punch Bowl. The local village of Thursley means Thor's place.
A still older story claims that two giants clashed in the area, and one, scooping up earth to throw at the other, created the landmark before missing the throw and creating the Isle of Wight. At the moment it has a main road running round the top edge of it (The A3) which is a notorious bottleneck, however a new road which has been tunnelled out will open this summer and the area will become peaceful at last.

Devil's slide is an area inside a Nature Conservency project in the Nachez township. This is a project my parents are very involved in that will complete a swath of protected lands from the columbia river to the cascade crest. Very pretty.
This area is apparently a popular hangout for Mountain Goats, although we didn't see any. The land being purchased for this project is also habitat to Big Horn Sheep and 35 other recognized species. It is also a crucial part of the migratory path of about 2500 local Elk.

Devils Tower (Lakota: Mato Tipila, which means “Bear Lodge”) is a monolithic igneous intrusion or volcanic neck located in the Black Hills near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet (386 m) above the surrounding terrain and the summit is 5,112 feet (1,558 m) above sea level.
Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The Monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (5.45 km2).
This photo was taken during a hike along the Red Beds Trail, a 3 mile trail which cirles the base of the tower and takes in part of the Belle Fourche river basin.
