During World War II the San Francisco Bay Area has been described as “a giant cannon aimed at the Pacific.” These concrete bunkers along Devil’s Slide (south of Pacifica along Highway 1) are all that remains of a long-retired guard to the western United States.
Tasmanian Devil
Characterised by its stocky and muscular build, black fur, pungent odour, extremely loud and disturbing screech, keen sense of smell, and ferocity when feeding. The Tasmanian devil's large head and neck allow it to generate amongst the strongest bite per unit body mass of any extant mammal land predator, and it hunts prey and scavenges carrion as well as eating household products if humans are living nearby. Despite its rotund appearance, the devil is capable of surprising speed and endurance, and can climb trees and swim across rivers.
This is Devils Churn on the Oregon coast. A channel has been eroded from the basalt from constant wave action that pulses through it. I am told that the collection of debris including sea shells, crustacians, kelp and God know what else, is ground against the rocks and forms a thick soup which looks like butter floating on the sea. Thus the name Devils Churn.
Devil's Gate can be seen from the Mormon Handcart Visitors Center. Devils Gate is a rock formation 33 miles southwest of Alcova, Wyoming. The gap in the Granite Mountains was used as a travel route by early pioneers
The Devils Backbone is a large vertical wall of dark andesite about 305m in length and 15m wide at its widest point. It was formed when lava forced its way up cracks and filled them, remaining standing when the rest of the formation had eroded away.
Rim Village, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
Legend has it that noted blues guitarist Robert Johnson was stopped at an intersection by no other then the Devil, himself. In order to be the best guitarist that ever lived, Johnson sold his soul. He recorded "Cross roads" alluding to this legend, and his early and untimely death only fed the legend.
Highway 61 is considered to be "Blues Highway" so be sure to have the proper tunes blasting while driving it. Eric Clapton's version of Johnson's song s an obvious place to start. Add in Bob Dylan's 1965 classic "Highway 61 Revisited" and fill in any blanks with Muddy Waters, BB King, some Rolling Stones and you are good to go.
Devils Wall.
This is the „Teufelsmauer“, a geologic oddity that can be found near the Harz mountains and near to my stay last weekend. I visited the place before, it's a strange landmark. Weather was great, bot so much the time I got there, but at least some landscape pictures.
