Mountain climbing is one of the most popular attractions of Devils Tower. It was first climbed on July 4, 1893 by ranchers William Rogers and Willard Ripley. They ascended by driving wooden pegs into cracks in the rock, which is still visible today. Fritz Wiessner free climbed his way up in 1937. In 1941 as part of a publicity stunt, George Hopkins parachuted his way atop Devils Tower. Unable to ascend, he was then trapped for six days before being rescued. Around 4000 people climb Devils Tower every year, one of the most popular spots in the United States.
The Devils Tower is sacred to the Lakota, Cheyenne and Kiowa, and many have strongly objected to what they see as desecration by climbers. Climbers have retorted that as Devils Tower is public land, they have every right to climb. A compromise has been reached, where there is a voluntary climbing ban enacted in June, when the tribes hold their ceremonies at Devils Tower. 85% of climbers honor the ban.

The devil's fork, Radio and TV antenna on the Mont-Royal. There is an interesting dichotomy between this structure and the other one on the mountain, the giant cross.

When He created a little devil, like any proud mom the good Lord exclaimed "Darling little devil !!".And yes, this was long long ago, when the devil was a tiny tot and amused God with his endless pranks on the good little angels. He would steal their halos while they slept and prance around with the halos hung on his little horns. And then one day as he grew up,,like any harassed mom the good Lord exclaimed "The devil !!" :D.The good little devil is approximately 6 inches.
Pink Jeep Tour...boy! They take you everywhere...thankfully, I did not take this one! We hiked to this spot!
The reflective surfaces are not textures!
Mumixer had pointed me in the direction of Devil's Moon a few weeks ago but with one thing and another I only made it out there today - and fell flat on my face so to speak: I was always under the impression that reflections and reflectivity is beyond the scope of present day real time render. So, how on earth did they achieve this? And why does it create no lag whatsoever? I took a lot of screenshots, some from the exact same location at slight angle variations since I want my computer scientist colleague, Selim to take a look at these and tell me what the hell is going on here...
Beautiful SIM too btw, but quite frankly the technology had me so gobsmacked that I couldn't really take much else in. Will go back for sure.
6 hours later:
ahum... Mossy put me wise: It is an extremely clever design trick: They did the entire architecture twice, one being the perpendicular mirror image of the other and then interleaved it with those transparent textures.
jeez... am i embarrassed or what?
Silhouette of Devil's Tower in Northeastern Wyoming. Looks kind of eerie like it's waiting for the mothership of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" to arrive.
Sketched while waiting for a ranger-led hike to begin. After I started sketching the rocks, an Iron Brigade reenactor walked into the foreground and a visitor approached him to talk. This sesquiscentennial was a sketcher's paradise!
The hike took us through Rose Woods to the Wheatfield, from which we could see the Peach Orchard. Those names sound very pleasant and pastoral, but the scene was anything but pleasant on July 2, 1863. The bloody wheatfield changed hands some five or six times that day.

Devil's Den, Gettysburg, PA, USA
Site of Sickles' left line on top the the rock outcrop called Devil' Den.
The Attack on Devil's Den
the confederate infantry attack of July 2nd swept from Seminar Ridge and struck the left of Sickles' line. For two terrible hours one reinforced Union Brigade and two batteries of artillery took the full shock of a three brigade attack. The survivors finally fell back to Cemetery ridge.

Thrift Shops, Museums, The Egyptian Theatre Oh My! Lighthouse Ghost, Devils, and Hobbit Trails Oh My! Pre's pre Nikes, Myrtle Wood Money, and sliding down the Sand Dunes Oh My!
Debbie W and I took a roadtrip to Florence/Coos Bay. We stayed at the Lighthouse Inn in Florence. We visite Haceta Head Lighthouse/Devils Elbow, Old Town Florence, HWY 101 to Coos Bay ith county museums, and print shop museum (with a Printer's Devil). Who knew the Coos BayArt Museum had Prefontaine's running shoes in a special room... and the Egyptian! A 1920s theatre with a fabulous Neon sign -- and luckily The Swiss Family Robinson movie was playing! The Thrift shops were either really good or really bad, and sometimes really good AND bad! We skipped the Sea Lion Caves - but let the Devil's Churn freak us out. Fabulous visit!
