The very difference between the landscapes in Death Valley are scarey to say the least. It's like they've been manipulated by humans in some way. Seeing the environment, soil and underground change that much in just a couple of miles is a challenge to science, I presume.

Teufelsberg translates to the Devil's mount, a suitably eery name for this US cold war era listening station. It stands upon a hill built during WWII with rubble from bombed buildings in Berlin.

The Devils Punchbowl is located 50 miles east of Los Angeles and 1 mile south of the San Andreas Fault. It is a formation of sandstone that was tilted and weathered. You can read more about it here

The Devils Postpile is a dark cliff of columnar basalt near Mammoth Mountain in eastern California. The postpile was created by a lava flow sometime with the last 100,000 and 700,000 years. The source of the lava is thought to have been somewhere near Upper Soda Springs campground at the north end of Pumice Flat on the floor of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River, from where it flowed to the site of the Postpile, was impounded by a moraine, and reached a thickness of 400 to 600 feet. The lava that now makes up the Postpile was near the bottom of this mass.
Because of its great thickness, much of the mass of pooled lava cooled slowly and evenly, which is why the columns are so long and so symmetrical. Columnar jointing occurs when certain types of lava cool - the joints develop when the lava contracts during the cooling process.
In 1911, President Howard Taft made the area into a United States National Monument. The John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail pass through the monument.
The columns average 2 ft in diameter (the largest being 3.5 ft) and many are up to 60 ft long. Together they look like tall posts stacked in a pile, hence the feature's name. Compared with other examples of columnar jointing, the Postpile has more hexagonal columns than most.

Devils Head is a mountain summit in the Rampart Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The 9,749-foot (2,971 m) peak is located in Pike National Forest, 14.2 miles (22.9 km) southwest by south (bearing 210°) of the community of Sedalia in Douglas County, Colorado, United States.
I got all of these for Christmas except the purple one. One day I will have them all! :)

A long bricked up doorway showing one way the church has evolved over the centuries.
Being in the north wall, this may well be a Devil's Door. Traditionally they were left open during baptisms to allow any evil spirits present in the child to escape. They were often bricked up following The Reformation.

The steep 88 step staircase took 600 convicts 16 years to dig. It was intended to provide an exit in the event Nassau was attacked. The Harbor is just beyond the sight of the camera. When an unidentified member of the British royal family saw it at the dedication, he remarked the area was superbly defendable until that walkway was installed!
January 2012. This endangered Tasmanian devil was photographed by infra-red cameras in immediate proximity logging coupe MD102B, which is located in the Meredith area of north-west Tasmania. This forest is part of the core area of 430,000 hectares that was promised protection as part of the Intergovernmental Agreement. Logging has recently commenced in this forest.
