The bizarre-looking, slow-moving, plant-eating walking stick - among the most intriguing of the insects - has raised camouflage, mimicry and defense to a veritable art form. Through an adaptation called "crypsis," it blends in so perfectly with its natural habitat that it often goes completely undetected by would-be predators. Its taxonomic family name, "Phasmatidae," derived from the Greek word "Phasma," means, appropriately, phantom or apparition.

The inlet developed over many thousands of years as wave action carved into the basalt shoreline, first forming a deep sea cave whose roof eventually collapsed. As the tide comes in it can throw spray several hundred feet into the air when the waves reach the end of the churn. Visitors are urged to be cautious when visiting the churn as it can be dangerous

The angled red butte in the center the photo, Devil’s Leap, sits on the northwest side of Red Basin southwest of Shell Wyoming. The red siltstone, shales and sandstones belong to a series of Triassic rock geologists call the Chugwater Formation. The Bighorn Mountain rise in the background. The canyon on the right side of the photo is Shell Canyon. This view can be found along the Red Gulch/Alkali National Backcountry Byway in Bighorn County.

This road is northeast of Kennewick, WA. I was looking for some gray-crowned rosy finches that were reported in the area, but I didn't find them.
This amazing river is just passed Grand Marais off Hwy 61. The flow rate was strong due to early spring rains and snow melt in the upper shelf.
It was a dark misty morning as I was heading up to Grand Portage on the Canadian Boarder
