The Devils Backbone is a vertical wall of dark andesite lining the cliff face and measuring about 1,000 feet long by 50 feet across near the top. A dike formed by molten lava that created and filled cracks, as it forced its way up through the rock and then solidified. It has been left standing by the erosion of the surrounding material.
Of all the dikes on the walls of Crater Lake, only this one reaches from the water's edge to the rim. If this once served as the feeder to a surface flow, the lava has been removed by erosion. Close to the lake the dike is 23 feet wide, but upward it increases in width to approximately 50 feet.
Devil's Pulpit is a quartzite column separated by the greater quartzite ledges of Monument Mountain in Great Barrington. Rich with history and lore, Monument Mountain has inspired the likes of Herman Melville, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and William Cullen Bryant. Bryant's famed poem "Monument Mountain" tells the story of a Mohican woman who was memorialized by the 100+ foot spire after leaping from the adjacent cliffs.
The Trustees of Reservations has owned this site since 1899.

Devil's Postpile, an example of columnar jointing in basalt. These unusual, symmetrical columns were formed by joints that developed when a river of molten lava contracted as it cooled slowly and evenly. The flow occurred nearly 100,000 years ago. The formation was exposed through erosion by glaciers and San Joaquin River. Devil's Postpile National Monument. Madera Co., Calif.
