The Devil's Garden trail in Utah's Arches National Park provides a lot of interesting redrock formations to explore, as well as several beautiful arches. This photograph is from a guided tour my sister and I took on May 31, 1989. Our guide was from the Canyonlands Field Institute.

The Tasmanian Devil is suitable for routes of a special kind. Its powerful 12 cell ion injection engine accelerates this massive vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds. In addition, this speeder has a plasma gun and a strong armor. In the sidecar are various spare parts to make repairs on the field to be done. Additional suspensions ensure that enough accessories can be carried along. All these qualities make the Tasmanian Devil the first choice In this race.

An active vent at the edge of the lake is a source of elemental sulfur, and supports a mining operation. Escaping volcanic gasses are channeled through a network of ceramic pipes, resulting in condensation of molten sulfur. The sulfur, which is deep red in color when molten, pours slowly from the ends of these pipes and pools on the ground, turning bright yellow as it cools. The miners break the cooled material into large pieces and carry it away in baskets.
The miners often use insufficient protection while working around the volcano and complain of numerous respiratory afflictions. There are 200 miners which extract 14 tons per day or only 20 percent of the daily continously deposit.
Devil’s matchstick
(Cladonia floerkeana)
Also known as 'British soldier'.
A quirky lichen with red-capped branches (known as 'podetia'), this lichen usually grows between one and three centimetres in height.
Like all lichens, the Devil's matchstick is actually two organisms working together: a fungus and an algae in a symbiotic relationship.
Where to see it
Cladonia floerkeana has a fondness for dead wood so rotting logs and fence posts are a good place to start. It also grows on well drained soil with a high organic matter content such as that found on heath and moorland.
Distribution
This lichen is scattered throughout the UK, although more commonly found in the north and the west.
Did you know?
Lichens are very sensitive to air pollution: the more lichens you find in a place the cleaner the air!

This geological growth stands out abruptly in the middle of Mammoth Hot Spring's Palette Springs. Fascinating.....
Have a wonderful weekend, hopefully with some sun and warmth.

Devils Tower National Monument
Wyoming
According to the Native American tribes of the Kiowa and Lakota, a group of girls went out to play and were spotted by several giant bears, who began to chase them. In an effort to escape the bears, the girls climbed atop a rock, fell to their knees, and prayed to the Great Spirit to save them. Hearing their prayers, the Great Spirit made the rock rise from the ground towards the heavens so that the bears could not reach the girls. The bears, in an effort to climb the rock, left deep claw marks in the sides, which had become too steep to climb. Those are the marks which appear today on the sides of Devils Tower. When the girls reached the sky, they were turned into the stars of the Pleiades.
