這座雕像的名稱叫 [ Our Lady of the Isles 島嶼女神 ]，雖然外觀是座很平凡的塑像但其實有著很深的當地歷史關聯。話說在 1950-60 年代其實幾乎整個 Uist 島都是軍事管制區，因為這個島位置偏遠又面對北大西洋，冷戰時期被英國政府做為飛彈以及其他武器的試驗場。除了可想而知的環境的破壞之外，島上的居民也很擔心固有的文化與生活模式被影響，當時島上的居民領袖 ( 一位神父 ) 為了要讓所有人重視英國政府這個決定的長遠影響，發起募款並且興建了這座雕像，直到今天這座雕像仍然是島上居民的精神象徵。
The statue is called [ Our Lady of the Isles ] for commemorating the struggle of local people against UK military installation back in late 1950s. A large part of Uist was assigned to be restricted military zone for missile testing, which suggested significant impact on local people and environment. To bring this issue to public attention, an important local priest started to raise funding for building this statue as well as negotiations with UK government. In the end the military development went ahead against the wish of local people but the statue remains to be a symbol of local spirit.
