Jozef Dietl (born January 24, 1804 in Podbużu near Drohobych, d. Jan. 18, 1878 in Krakow ) - Polish physician, politician, professor and rector of the Jagiellonian University, Krakow president (1866-1874).

He was one of seven children of Franz Dietl, official Austrian and noblewoman Anne of Kulczycki. He studied first in Sambor, on to high school in Tarnów, and then in Nowy Sacz. He studied philosophy at the University of Lvov, then medicine in Vienna, where he received his doctorate of medicine and began to practice medicine. In Vienna, he joined the mainstream of modern medicine nineteenth century.

In 1851 he was appointed professor and head of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Medical Clinic of the Jagiellonian University. At that time, he hardly used the Polish language. This function he held until 1865. In the academic year 1861/1862 he was rector of the Jagiellonian University. He was elected for another year, from 1862 to 1863, but the authorities refused to approve it in this position on the grounds that it would undermine the custom that each year the rector was a person from another department. June 14, 1865, Emperor Franz Joseph I signed a decree removing the professor of the chair, clinic and transfer him to retirement without giving any reason.

Jozef Dietl fought Koltun (in those days was considered a disease). It was his idea that people with different ailments should be treated in separate rooms (at that time patients with various diseases were in the same room - just each other) . He created a new field of medicine - balneology.

In the years 1866-1874 he served as President of Kraków. September 13, 1866 City Council with the ratio of 51 votes against five nominated Professor Józef Dietl as elected mayor. From the function he resigned in June 1874, with the increasing criticism and resistance from the city council.

As president Dietl led among other things to:

doubling of urban income without imposing new burdens on the city,

plant arrangement, the old city walls and defense towers, buildings facade renewal,

preparation of a plan for reconstruction and maintenance of the Cloth Hall (Tuchhallen),

Old Vistula riverbed cleaning,

UJ development, creation of industrial schools, acquisition management schools in the city, the creation of the School of Fine Arts,

creation of a city fire department.

For his efforts to spread the physical, hygiene and dietary therapy and spas, Dietl ranked first Polish healing waters. With it became fashionable Polish spas - Krynica, Rabka Iwonicz, Szczawnica and Żegiestów.

Jozef Dietl married late, in 1846, with his junior nineteen years of Austria coming from Vienna - Helena Zieterbarth (d. 1885), which, however, due to being fatal in Krakow decided to leave the city and the husband. The professor died childless, and his properties Dietlowi Leopold wrote his nephew, asking him to secure the bequest to his wife Helen. He was buried in the cemetery in Krakow Rakowice. One of the main streets of Krakow is named after him (called Planty Dietlowskie) , Room 112 (conference room ) in the City of Krakow and Hospital Street Tax. In the years 1860-1878 he was an honorary member of the Poznań Society of Friends of Science.

Has received many awards and honors, including to

1861 elected an Honorary Citizen of the city of Krakow,

1866 was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit of the Crown,

1867 elected an Honorary Citizen of Nowy Sacz

1869 received the Iron Cross Third Class from the Emperor Franz Joseph I,

1869 Commander of the Order of St . Gregory by Pope Pius IX.

After at least one false start (I think the original developer pulled out and Banbury Council stepped in to finance it) the new development in the heart of the town is in full swing. The large building on the left is to be a Premier Inn and that on the right a multiplex cinema with canal-side eateries and bars. Not so long ago the council was claiming new development would be 'in keeping with Banbury's market town character.' I think that may have gone by the wayside! The height of the new Premier Inn has surprised many. It looks like it's going to be the biggest building in town after the coffee factory, and the canal will be running in a very urban chasm between the new developments.
