Reflections of the older area of Bath and people passing by, in one of the new store windows in the first phase of the £360 million Southgate Development which opened in Bath this week. I rather liked the display of ancient sowing machines which filled all the windows of this clothes shop. Best viewed large: www.flickr.com/photos/david_lewis_baker_arts/4077757526/s...

July 3, 3036: Walk around the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks, California. On June 23rd, the Thousand Oaks City Council approved, 5-0, the “Downtown Thousand Oaks” project centered around the current Civic Arts Plaza. The new downtown will include 240 housing units, a hotel, and businesses. The ten-year project will use the current Civic Arts Plaza parkland and several properties west of the site. My favorite building to be lost is at 1948 Thousand Oaks Blvd. The 1959 building housed a Taco Bell in the 1970s, then a shoe store, a museum, and a winery. CV26-208
I had an opportunity to explore the construction site for the future city centre and captured a few interesting perspectives.

I indulged in a little photo-geekery just to see how noticeable the effects of stand-development are compared to normal agitation.
Here we have an overview scanned at 3200dpi; the left is stand-dev (1+100 for 55mins), while the right was the recommended 1+50 for 7mins agitated 5x every 30s.
There was a difference in overall contrast so I've normalized the levels as best as possible.
Here we see the effect of acutance on the lines at edges of slate sheets and rock texture.

It was designed by Patrick Hodgkinson[2] in the mid-1960s, based on studies by Leslie Martin.[3] It was initially planned as a private development at a time when private, mixed-use development in the UK was rare. Building started in 1967 and was completed in 1972, though the building fell some way short of its intended size. The original plan extended up to Euston Road but the Ministry of Defence would not release the site of a building they leased for use by the Territorial Army (and that still stands next to the Centre today)[citation needed].
After failing to attract sufficient private buyers on time, the residential section was leased to the London Borough of Camden for use as council housing, while the developer retained ownership of the structure and shopping areas. The exterior of the building was never painted because the Borough could not afford to complete work on the building after they took control. In Hodgkinson's design, the blocks would have been painted cream, a shade typical of the Georgian period, as a homage to the terraced houses that previously stood on the site and those that still surround it.
Despite being widely disliked by those who are unsympathetic to modernist architecture, it achieved Grade II status in 2000. By this time, however, many of its shop premises were unoccupied. Plans for renovation had repeatedly been blocked by residents' committees but in November 2002, the £22 million project began. This included the painting of the blocks in their originally-planned colour and the commissioning of artist Susanna Heron to introduce water features to the central space.[4][2] The major work was completed in late 2006 with the opening of branches of several high street chain stores and restaurants. The dual management has caused problems though, as the landlord restored the structure of the estate but the council is responsible for maintenance of the residential properties - so while the concrete structure was restored, the windows remained untouched, detracting from the overall aesthetic of the development. In 2007, the council started work on replacing the windows that has resulted in the residents having scaffolding outside their flats for the second time in just a few years.
Now referring to itself as The Brunswick, the centre contains 560 flats, various shops, cafés and restaurants, a Waitrose supermarket, and the Renoir Cinema (one of London's Curzon Cinemas group).
Everywhere the Skytrain goes, old buildings are torn down, and new highrises go up. The idea of the various city planners seems to be that people who live next to the line will take public transit rather than using their cars. This is a myth, of course, but in any case, land values rise, and developers move in. Behind this fence Bosa Corp will be erecting at least one, and possibly two highrises, with, as they say, retail space available. On this site there used to be a Safeway, and about half of the Burquitlam Plaza, with small stores, a gas station, and a parking lot. Is it progress? Somehow, it doesn't seem like it.

A new year, a new line from Transformers. Folks, welcome to Seige: War for Cybertron.
Now, if you've been collecting Transformers or have been following recent developments, you'll know that people are very excited for this line because of its throwback to the various G1 characters and designs. Equally well known, however, is now MSRP on everything from the Deluxe size and upward is $10 CAD more than it was during the last line.
Of course, Hasbro has done a few things here and there to justify this price increase, but we'll get to these as we go along. You probably won't be shocked if you buy those "premium" Studio Series figures, but if you've been avoiding Movie stuff, this is one hell of a sticker shock. Of course, there is no avoiding this in the sense that no matter where you go, this increase will be there, and with the Unified Product offering, the Takara versions will be identical to this, probably even down to the box given how Takara Tomy is printed on it as well.
Overall, I'm going to say that while a price increase was inevitable, and you do get some more compared to other lines, you're not getting $10 more. Understandably, part of this increase is also exchange rates - I believe that the prices went up by $5 USD over the Power of the Primes line, but this doesn't translate into $10 CAD.
In case you don't know, other than the G1 throw back, the other gimmick of the Seige line is accessorizing, namely each figure Deluxe and upward have 5mm ports built into the body for attachment of various weapons and power ups, each sold separately, of course.
My first blurb with regards to this line will the new Megatron Voyager figure, now priced at a paltry $39.99, which fortunately I had the foresight/patience to wait for a sale during Boxing Day on. As images show, he is clearly inspired by the G1 figure. I'd say the Generations Megatron is inspired by the original toy, and this one is inspired by the toon model.
In addition to the figure, Megatron comes with two weapons, his trust Fusion Cannon, and a fancy sword. Aesthetically, this G1 Megatron definitely seems much more burly than any of its Voyager sized cousins, and has many homages to the original, such as the helmet head, chest, and the shoulder parts that are obviously the hammer on his gun mode.
So one of things you'll notice is that this figure comes in a box... nothing shocking about that revelation as this size class has always come in a box. The Deluxe classes now also come in boxes and other than size, they're very much identical to this and what I imagine the Leader size will be.
It should be noted that from what I've seen, Leader sized figures are going to be Voyager sized with some additional snap on parts. How well those sell at $70 will be interesting to see.
The box is nice and all. Good art work and portraits of the character n the box. The big feature this time around is apparently if you have a blacklight, you can use it on the box for some secret code or something, which is typed in at a website.
Inner packaging is as collector unfriendly as always with those awful plastic ties instead of a clamshell plastic tray.
A welcome change that I've noticed is that the actual material used for the figure is much, much sturdier feeling than the stuff used in the Power of the Primes line. It's weird.. in Titans, the Voyagers and Leaders felt flimsy but the Deluxes were pretty solid. Then, in Primes everything felt downgraded though it didn't get much worse for Voyagers and Leaders. Joints are also nice and tight for the most part - some joints are clearly not made for that sort of thing.
QC isn't perfect, as always, with my figure having a piece of plastic on "heel" just slightly warped so it doesn't clip back into place perfectly. Not the end of the world, but it does hamper transformation somewhat.
I will also note that from a paint perspective, I feel that Megatron as well as the other Seige figures I've purchased have what I feel would be a balance between the barebones nature of Hasbro in the past and the sometimes extravagance of Takara. That battle damage though.. it doesn't distract, at least not on Megatron, but it certainly doesn't really add much to the experience.
All the major articulation points are there, and on Megatron you can make the most of them. Naturally, no ab crunch or upper chest movement, but also missing is no wrist swivel though there is forearm twist to sort of make up for that. As mentioned earlier, the joints are nice and tight, so holding most poses will not be an issue. Also, there aren't any joint misalignment issues to report.
Transformation level is about right, at least to me. I've been a fan of the more complicated lines , such as the original RiD line in 2000. It feels like what Armada Megatron should have been, had they given more than half a shit back then. With the exception of the undercarriage, the vehicle mode is well executed, and allows for the relative seamless integration of the two weapons the figure comes with.
Overall, I do like this Megatron. The toy is fun to play with, doesn't have any annoying gimmicks that ruin the aesthetics of the figure, and the throw back to the classic Megatron is nice.
Having said said that, nice as it is I don't think it warrants the price increase. I think that overall, what is going to happen is that unless you're very, very diehard and must have everything the moment it comes out, you're probably going to see the vast majority of the line sit on shelves until a sale comes along. I also foresee more random sales and discounts at stores that reduce the price, but not to the point of the previous line.

Local tradition knows that Dortmund was founded by Charlemagne in the course of the Saxon Wars. The first written mention of "Throtmanni" dates back to 882. In 1152, a court day was held in Dortmund under King Frederick Barbarossa. Craftsmen and merchants settled and so Dortmund developed into city. A fire in 1232 almost completely destroyed the town. The fire also caused the loss of the town's archives and with them all documents from the time before the fire. Dortmund's privileges, which had been lost in the fire, were renewed by Frederick II in 1236.
In 1293 the city was granted the brewing right and unprecedented development of the beer industry within the city began. In 1389, Dortmund survived the "Great Dortmund Feud" against the Count of the Mark and the Archbishop of Cologne. However, an economic decline was initiated. This process was continued and intensified by the Thirty Years' War and led to the city's decline, with the population falling to 4500 by 1793. Dortmund became an exclave of the Principality of Orange-Nassau. In 1808 Dortmund became part of the Napoleonic Grand Duchy of Berg. After the Prussian victory over Napoleon, Dortmund fell to the Prussian province of Westphalia in 1815. From the mid of 19th century, Dortmund's renewed rise and transformation into an industrial city began due to coal mining and steel processing. Since the opening of the railroad in 1847, Dortmund became a transportation hub in the Ruhr region. Another contribution to development came in 1899 with the opening of the Dortmund-Ems Canal. This infrastructure paved Dortmund's way to becoming a major city. The city grew beyond the narrow confines of the medieval ramparts.
By the outbreak of WWII, the townscape had changed from a farming town to a metropolitan appearance. During WWII, more than 100 air raids destroyed more than 90 percent of the city, including its historic churches. Reconstruction proceeded quickly, and by 1950 the city had 500,000 inhabitants.
Today, with about 590,000 inhabitants, Dortmund is part of the "Ruhr district", a polycentric urban area. With a population of over 5 million, it is the largest urban area in Germany.
-
There is evidence of a palatine church from the Ottonian period, which was destroyed during war unrest around 1060 and then rebuilt with a new outer crypt to house the St. Reinoldus relics, which may have been brought to Dortmund in 1065. St. Reinholdus (aka "Renaud de Montauban") is since Dortmund´s patron saint
This church was probably destroyed again during fighting between 1113 and 1115 and then rebuilt. The fire of 1232 destroyed the church a third time. It was built from 1250 to 1270, and is located at the crossing of the Hellweg (a historic trade route) and the historic road from Cologne to Bremen. From 1421 to 1450, the large council chancel was built.. After its completion of the tower in 1454, it was 112 m tall and was referred to as the "Miracle of Westphalia".
The furnishings of St. Reinoldi make it clear that an essential function of the building was the representation of Dortmund's imperial freedom.
In 1562 the congregations of Dortmund confirmed their adoption of Lutheranism in St. Reinold's Church. In 1661, the tower collapsed after being damaged during an earthquake. The foundation for the new tower was laid in 1662, and the building was completed in 1701, with a baroque ornament on the top.
The church was heavily damaged in WW II. The reconstruction, partly financed by donations, began in 1950 and lasted six years. In June 1956, consecration was celebrated in the rebuilt church.
Construction of the natural surface trail is well underway as Wildwood Park development continues on Thursday, April 8.
