The town hall of Middelburg is one of the most impressive medieval town halls in the Netherlands. Construction began on April 21, 1452, and the section facing the Market Square was completed in 1458. The town hall was used not only as an administrative center but also as a meat hall and cloth hall, which is typical of medieval Flemish tradition.
The town hall is built in the late Flemish-Brabantine Gothic style. The construction was led by eight members of the Flemish master builder family Keldermans from Mechelen, who worked on the project over seven generations. This family of architects played a crucial role in the development of the Gothic style in the Low Countries.
The facade of the town hall is richly decorated with statues of counts and countesses who ruled over Zeeland. These statues were added between 1514 and 1518. The tower was completed in 1521 and features a large weather vane in the shape of a 'sea knight' or Neptune. The clock, installed in 1525, is a special feature with moving 'little men' who fight each other when the hours strike.
During World War II, the town hall was severely damaged by a fire in 1940. After the war, a major restoration campaign followed, during which the Gothic facades were restored and new construction in an adapted style was added. The restored town hall was reopened on August 18, 1950, by Queen Juliana.
The town hall served as the city hall until 2004 and is now the seat of University College Roosevelt. The building remains an important symbol for Middelburg and was voted the second most beautiful building in the Netherlands by readers of the Dutch newspaper Trouw in 2007. The Middelburg town hall is a unique example of medieval architecture and cultural-historical significance.
