January 25, 2011 - "Induced Development in Risky Locations: Fire Suppression and Land Use in the American West" - Resources for the Future Fellow, Sheila Olmstead, recently presented her research at a Penn Program on Regulation Risk Regulation Seminar on the effects of fire suppression in the American West. Olmstead and her research partner, RFF Fellow Carolyn Kousky, undertook to study the effects of fire suppression on inducing commercial and residential development which may be at risk for future fire-related disasters despite these suppression efforts. They found that the efforts by the federal government to suppress wildfires in fire-prone regions attracts commercial and residential development. Even with suppression efforts, however, there is still the danger of damage being done to these increasing developments in the fire-prone regions of the Western United States, resulting in potentially thousands of dollars of damaged or destroyed property. As this development increases with further fire suppression efforts, there is a greater risk of damage to more properties. Olmstead's research is integral in determining the true risk of wildfires to areas of the Western United States, which, despite decades of fire suppression efforts, are still in danger of fire damage. Sheila Olmstead is a Fellow at Resources for the Future, an independent, non-partisan economic think tank which analyses policy decisions in order to determine their impact upon natural resources and the environment. Olmstead is also an associate professor of public affairs at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.
Kentucky 4-H Teen council member Jefferson Oldam and Assistant Extension Director for Ky 4-H Youth Development Rachel Guidugli spoke at the opening ceremonies of the 2026 KY 4-H Teen Conference on the campus of the University of Kentucky. Dr. Guidugli lost her voice and had to use signs.
