Development Impact and the PhD Scholarship - Tool Kit training held at Cumberland Lodge, Windsor from 30 July - 1 August 2014

Location: Balubur, Bandung of West Java.

I ever wished this area should be used for green public space, but unfortunately the latest progress shows new hypermarket will be developed here. The problem is: this area is well known for traffic jam; the junctions around are intersections between busy Tamansari street (under flyover) and gates to flyover themselves.

It is a bit complex indeed that Bandung City government had a deal to provide a proper building replacement for ex-Balubur stores owners (they who had stores on this area before flyover was built), makes a "simple assumption" that Balubur area is still a market spot.

The question is: when will City of Bandung government stop developing market areas?

More and more malls, supermarkets, outlets areas, traditional markets, but very limited public spaces!

Note: this photo was taken in a hurry when I stopped for traffic light on motorcycle. I just turned my pocket camera to the left side, a bit adjustment, took a shot without seeing LCD or viewfinder, and is then surprised that the photo fills correctly to sidewalk line (bottom), ad billboard (right), and tree (left). A coincidental but nice.

I took this at Cuyamaca College at their Child Development Center on campus. They have developed the center into a Reggio Emilio center. I loved it!

Earlier this month, the European Commission (EC) held its tenth ‘European Development Days’ (EDD) forum at the Tour & Taxis in Brussels. The stated aim for this annual gathering is to, “bring the development community together each year to share ideas and experiences in ways that inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.” Recognizing a connection between this goal and the United Nation’s (UN) 17 newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, also known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development), the EC made the 2030 Agenda this year’s focus.

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was invited to give the opening remarks and I was on hand with my press pass and camera to cover his address. He observed that the forum was “timely and influential,” and adding that, “[t]he UN counts on your ideas and your partnerships to build a better future for all humanity, for people, planet, peace, and prosperity.” Those four final ‘P’ words, along with ‘partnerships’ make up the 5 ‘areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet’ which the goals target.

Mr. Ban had been introduced by Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Vice-President of the European Commission. Someone I’ve had the chance to hear and photograph in the past. I was again left admiring her poise and grasp of the broad and ever challenging issues involved in foreign relations.

Following Mr. Ban’s address were reflections by world leaders and representatives from international organizations. Below are some of the people that I had the opportunity to hear and photograph. Also included are photos of interactive displays for participants, such as the virtual reality setup by the United Nations Regional Information Center (UNRIC) which allowed participants to see the world through the eyes of a refugee. UNRIC is also an organization I have worked for in the past and still shoot events with from time to time.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a call to action to ensure a better world for everyone. Goal 17, “partnerships for goals”, is arguably the most important of all SDGs because achieving any of the other goals depends on collaboration. Governments, the private sector, academia and civil society must work together to reach shared objectives.

This high-level event focused on the challenges inherent in attaining the SDGs’ principle “leave no one behind” in an increasingly turbulent context. Discussion focused on how the EBRD, in tandem with our civil society and private sector partners, is building resilience in local communities, as well as developing partnerships for an inclusive and peaceful future. It explored how stronger coordination and alignment between multiple players can respond to geopolitical challenges, foster new opportunities for growth and deliver a bigger impact. The panellists also examined the importance of empowering local communities and civil society organisations, and the potential approaches to ensure that they make their own choices in creating a more vibrant and sustainable future.

Plan has been running a project since 2005 to help children who are living on railway tracks. Research revealed that 700 children live on railway stations, including runaway kids. Children sleep on the roofs of the railway tracks or in hide outs alongside the railway tracks. Once they grow older, they disappear into trafficking and prostitution.
