Iowa State Capitol Building. The building was constructed between 1871 and 1886. For thirty-five years before construction of the current building started, a three story brick building housed the Iowa legislature. Today's capitol is on the same grounds, and is the only five-domed state capitol in the country. The building is brick with limestone from Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio, and Illinois. Iowa stone is the foundation for the many porticoes of the building. Both front and back porticoes have pediments supported by six Corinthian columns each. The dome of the capitol is gilded in tissue-paper thin sheets of pure 23-karat gold, with a protective layer sealing the gold from the elements, and is 275 feet (84 m) tall.

Here you can find the Musée Carnavalet and the former home of Victor Hugo.
Today it features an eclectic mix of upscale bistros, contemporary art galleries and boutique hotels.
What I like best though is that it is surrounded on all sides by arches such as you see in these shots.
The acoustics here are so good that many musicians - including opera singers - rehearse under these arches.

Naveta Des Tudons
One of the few LE images from my break, the main reason for the LE was to try and loose the sightseers who where flocking around the monument. Captured in full sunlight with approx 16 stops of ND it created quite a bit of colour shift hence the B&W conversion.
Naveta Des Tudons is situated on the island of Menorca in the Balearic Islands and claims to be the most significant prehistoric monument in Europe. The construction is 3.000 years old and was used as a collective funeral monument. Inside the remains of human bodies have been found. The Naveta des Tudons is part of a tragic legend about giants who were disputing the love of a young girl. The giants agreed that one would build the "naveta" and the other would dig a water well and the first to finish would marry the girl. The giant building the well found water first, but the other one, mad with jealousy, killed him by throwing the last stone he had to fit. Today that stone is still missing from the facade of the "naveta".
After getting skunked by the eastbound IAIS running under the cover of silence, I decided to use the increasing fog to grab some night shots.

A quick search on the internet suggests that this model was most likely made in 1995. I noticed a few for sale ranging in price from £800 to about £2,500.
Covered in ice, the Des Groseilliers drifted in pack ice for approximately 13 months for the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) campaign. The ship served as the hotel for all participants in the surface program, and provided power, laboratory space, staging areas, shop facilities, computer network, communications, and all infrastructure for the science program.
