This one looks unfinished and with something missing!

A large group of plastic artists, actors, chefs or athletes give life to these 1.80-meter-tall meninas.

The fun is going to be in running into dozens of sculptures in the middle of the street. Walking, for example, through the Puerta de Alcalá, through the Plaza de Cibeles, through the Gran Vía. Each one decorated in a different way, with different colors, with personal visions and individual messages.

All the figures incorporate a QR code that will be scanned with a mobile device. This will serve to access the information of each menina, her presentation and the approach that the artist has wanted to give her. Some figures will be auctioned and the benefits will go to the NGOs selected by the artists or sponsors.

Reinterpreting Velázquez

Of course, the initiative proposes to reinterpret the work of Velázquez known as Las Meninas. Actually, the painting was not originally called that, but The Family of Felipe IV, which is the one portrayed. But since the 19th century, the name that referred to the companions of the Infanta Margarita of Austria became popular.

La Meninas Madrid Gallery intends to pay homage to this paradigmatic painting of the Spanish Golden Age. Or rather take art to the streets of Madrid, using the iconic claim of the meninas.

It is also a tribute to diversity, to freedom of expression. To everything that Madrid represents as a melting pot of cultures and artistic manifestations. As its organizer, Antonio Azzato, says, if you stay at home you always miss something.

Azzato has studied Velázquez's painting in depth. Aware of the numerous interpretations that have been made of this canvas throughout history, he now dares to reinterpret it in his own way.

To do this, Azzato has brought together a wide group of artists from various disciplines. From designers, sculptors and painters to actors, some established, others emerging. All willing to contribute their personal vision.

In the first edition we saw meninas signed by Marta Hazas, Jordi Molla, Vicky Martín Berrocal or Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada. In the second we saw those of Dani Rovira and Ouka Leele among many others. The third brought us those of Antonia Dell'Ate, Jaime Martínez Alonso, Marta Sánchez, Modesto Lomba or Asier Etxeandía. And the fourth to Ana Obregón, Boris Izaguirre, Chef José Andrés or DJ Nano.

This fifth edition of Meninas Madrid Gallery has the participation of Los Morancos, Paulo Coelho, Carmen Lomana, Pablo Motos and Saúl Cravioto among many others. In addition, this year the organization has invited students from design schools and universities, such as the European Institute of Design or the Francisco de Vitoria University, to participate.

Every year we find some menina that triumphs for some reason. For example, last year there was a pilgrim menina, on the occasion of the celebration of the Xacobeo Year, next to the church of Santiago. It is also one decorated by the designer Lorenzo Caprile next to the Puerta de Alcalá.

There are more than 40 sculptures that will decorate the streets of Madrid. The City Council has ceded the main spaces of the capital so that the figures can be freely admired by the widest possible public.

The sculptures are made of fiberglass and are life size of a person. That is why they do not attract the citizen's attention too much from a distance, but rather when he comes across them. A height of 1.80 by a depth of 1.60 and a weight of 30 kilos are appreciable dimensions on the ground, once located.

Each sculpture has a QR code that can be scanned with any mobile device and explains the concept of the work as well as presenting the menina virtually.

The event is charitable. At the end of the exhibition, some works will be auctioned and the proceeds will go to organizations selected by the artists themselves or sponsors. As they will bear the signature of their authors, it will be a unique occasion for collectors.

Las Meninas are located in open and central spaces, common places of passage. The idea is that many people see them. But those who want to see them need to orient themselves around the city to find them.

One of two pillars delineating the lower entrance to Edward Street Park - a nice bit of public art.

The park is almost totally surrounded by six-storey student accommodation.

The brick-walled enclosure behind is one of the few remaining pieces of 'old' left in the area.

The area is quiet due to various traffic calming and exclusion schemes, and the area is adorned with much litter most of which is trapped in areas of planting.

Some suggest it is to make the students feel at home, but I don't support that view!

The subtle form of the entrance features is based on a pair of parentheses/brackets and the intricate pattern is made up of a repeated asterisk. Bronze asterisk studs have been installed in throughout the park. These symbols give a nod to the old Stevenson Blake Type Foundry which once occupied the lower end of Edward Street Park.

BALTIMORE, DID NOT CAPTURE THE WELCOMING, KINDLY EXPRESSION ON THE FACE OF THE

STATUE UNTIL PHOTOGRAPHS ESPECIALLY TAKEN OF LOCAL NEGROES WERE FORWARDED TO

HIM. THIS HE DID SO BEAUTIFULLY THAT THE TIMES IN 1958 TERMED THE STATUE A

MANIFESTATION OF THE LOVE AND RESPECT OF THE WHITE PEOPLE HERE FOR THE

NEGROES.

YET, THE STATUE DID NOT MEET WITH THE APPROVAL, OR AT LEAST IT WAS VICTIM,

NOT LONG AFTERWARD, EBONY MAGAZINE DEVOTED TWO PAGES TO IT, ONE A PHOTOGRAPH

AND THE OTHER AN ANGRY EDITORIAL, WHICH, IF MEMORY SERVES ME RIGHT, TERMED THE

STATUE "A SYMBOL OF DEGRADATION" AND DEMANDED ITS REMOVAL.

WITH THE CHANGING OF RACIAL PATTERNS NOW GOING ON IN THIS COUNTRY, AND WITH

PEOPLE OF GOOD WILL FROM BOTH RACES TRYING TO ACCOMMODATE TO THE CHANGE, IT

BECAME PATENT THAT THE STATUE HAD OUTLIVED ITS USEFULNESS AS A SYMBOL OF GOOD

WILL, AND HAD BECOME, INDEED, A SYMBOL OF LOCAL NEGROES, OF RACIALISM.

IT HAS BEEN THE VICTIM OF PAINTING OUTRAGES TWICE AND OF A CROSS-BURNING

INCIDENT WITHIN RECENT YEARS, THOUGH NO DEFACEMENT HAS OCCURRED.

In der Stabfiguren-Technik hat Richard Teschner (1879–1948), einer der bemerkenswertesten Vertreter des Wiener Jugendstils, neue Maßstäbe gesetzt. Teschner war außergewöhnlich vielseitig begabt: Er war Maler, Graphiker, Bildhauer, Puppenspieler und noch vieles mehr. Mit seinem revolutionären Figurentheater schuf er von den Puppen über die Stücke bis hin zur Bühnentechnik und Begleitmusik ein theatralisches Gesamtkunstwerk. Ausgehend von der javanischen Stabfigur entwickelte er einen neuen, ausdrucksvollen Puppentypus für seine pantomimischen Spiele. Die Überwindung der herkömmlichen Guckkastenbühne führte zum einzigartigen Rund des Figurenspiegels mit Bildern von großer Schönheit und suggestiver Wirkung.

In techniques for rod-puppets, Richard Teschner, one of the most notable representatives of Viennese art nouveau, set new standards. Teschner was a man of exceptionally diverse gifts: he was a painter, graphic designer, sculptor, puppeteer and much more. With his revolutionary theatre of figures, he created an integrated theatrical work of art encompassing everything from puppets to plays, stagecraft and incidental music. Using the Javanese rod-puppets as his model, he developed a new, expressive puppet variety for his pantomimic plays. Overcoming the traditional proscenium stage led to the unique round of the Magic Mirror, which gave rise to images of great beauty and suggestive effect.

Walter Seymour Allward, sculptor (born 18 November 1876 in Toronto; died 24 April 1955 in Toronto). Walter Allward cemented his reputation as one of Canada’s greatest monumental sculptors with the mammoth Canadian National Vimy Memorial in Vimy, France (1922–36), which commemorated the important Battle of Vimy Ridge (April 1917) and the more than 11,000 Canadians listed as missing in action during the First World War.

Education and Training

After working in his teens as a carpenter with his father, Allward served an apprenticeship with the architectural firm Gibson and Simpson for several years beginning in 1891. He then worked at the Don Valley Brick Works, where he modelled architectural ornaments. This early training, supplemented by modelling classes at Toronto’s Central Technical School, prepared him for his lifelong career, that of monumental sculpture.

Early Work

Allward’s early work included the figure of “Peace” on the North-West Rebellion Monument in Queen’s Park, Toronto (1895 ), which he completed at age 19; The Old Soldier, commemorating the War of 1812 in Victoria Memorial Square, Toronto (1903); and a life-sized figure of Oronhyatekha, commissioned by the subject for the Independent Order of Foresters’ Temple Building in Toronto (1899).

His reputation well established, Allward was commissioned to execute busts for the Provincial Museum, Toronto, including busts of Lord Tennyson, Sir Charles Tupper, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Sir Oliver Mowat and others. Also on the grounds of Queen’s Park are statues of General John Graves Simcoe (1903) and Sir Oliver Mowat (1905).

Heroic Monuments

Allward’s real talent lay in his heroic monuments, which include The Boer War Memorial Fountain in Windsor (1906), The South African Memorial in Toronto (1910), The Bell Monument in Brantford (1917), The Baldwin-Lafontaine Monument on Parliament Hill, Ottawa (1914) and a design for a King Edward VII memorial. The onset of the First World War prevented the completion of the latter, but two figures, “Truth” and “Justice,” were cast in bronze, and today flank the entrance of the Supreme Court of Canada in Ottawa. An almost identical figure of “Justice” was used on The Vimy Memorial years later. Allward’s other memorials to the First World War include The Stratford Memorial (1922) in Stratford and The Peterborough Citizen’s War Memorial in Peterborough (1929) .

Vimy Memorial

Allward won the Vimy commission from the federal government in 1921 and moved to London, England, the following year, where he set up a studio. He made regular trips to Vimy over the next several years.

The Vimy Memorial was unveiled 26 July 1936 by King Edward VIII in the presence of more than 50,000 people, including over 6,000 Canadians, many of them veterans, who had travelled to witness the event.

Upon his return to Canada in August 1936, Allward designed the William Lyon Mackenzie Memorial in Queen’s Park (1940), and a monument, which never materialized, to Sir Frederick Banting after his sudden death in 1941.

Honours

In 1902, Allward was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and in 1914 became a full academician. His diploma work, The Storm (c 1920, bronze), is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. He was also a member of the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto.
