Desert View Watchtower , également connu sous le nom Indian Watchtower à Desert View , est un bâtiment en pierre de 21 mètres situé sur la rive sud du Grand Canyon dans le parc national du Grand Canyon en Arizona , aux États-Unis .

The Katpana Desert (Biang-a Naqpo), known also as Katpana Biang-a or Cold Desert, is a high-altitude desert located in Skardu Valley in District Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The desert contains large sand dunes that are sometimes covered in snow during the winters. Situated at an elevation of 2,226 metres (7,303 ft) above sea level, the Katpana Cold Desert is one of the highest deserts in the world. While the desert technically stretches from the banks of Indus River in the south of Skardu to New Ranga Village in the north, the portion of the desert that is most frequented by tourists is located near Katpana Lake close to Skardu Airport.

Temperatures range from a maximum of 27 °C (81 °F) and a minimum (in October) of 8 °C (46 °F), which can drop further to below −17 °C (1 °F) in December and January. The temperature occasionally drops as low as −25 °C (−13 °F).

Another desert denizen in my series.

From Wikipedia:

"The desert bighorn has become well adapted to living in the desert heat and cold and, unlike most mammals, their body temperature can safely fluctuate several degrees. During the heat of the day, they often rest in the shade of trees and caves.

Southern desert bighorn sheep are adapted to a desert mountain environment with little or no permanent water. Some may go without visiting water for weeks or months, sustaining their body moisture from food and from rainwater collected in temporary rock pools. They may have the ability to lose up to 30% of their body weight and still survive. After drinking water, they quickly recover from their dehydrated condition. Wildlife ecologists are just beginning to study the importance of this adaptive strategy, which has allowed small bands of desert bighorns to survive in areas too dry for many of their predators."

This ram was spotted in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Nevada.

Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosi state, Mexico, at twilight, it was getting dark and my mind was preoccupied by the prospect of going down the steep slippery stone trail in the dark, thankfully I did NOT end up in a Mexican hospital with a fractured ankle this time. Happy Monday to everyone.

Some warmth in these cold days for you!

It occupies all open or semi-open habitats on all continents except South America. It needs easy ground access. No species is truly forest.

Its plumage is very inconspicuous, cryptic and often homochromous with the environment in which it blends easily. Species from a desert or predominantly bare ground environment have uniform plumage while species from grassy environments have streaked plumage. Juveniles have speckled plumage.

Quail

From Cornell:

Gambel’s Quail are gregarious birds of the desert Southwest, where coveys gather along brushy washes and cactus-studded arroyos to feed. Males and females both sport a bobbing black topknot of feathers. The male’s prominent black belly patch distinguishes it from the similar California Quail (the two species' ranges don't overlap). This ground-hugging desert dweller would rather run than fly—look for these tubby birds running between cover or posting a lookout on low shrubs.

You’re most likely to see Gambel’s Quail in groups (coveys) on the ground, walking and foraging or scurrying between patches of cover. When alarmed they break suddenly into flights that tend to cover short distances but can be up to half a mile. Otherwise their flights are confined to “short hops” up to roosting spots and across barriers such as canyons. Look for groups feeding on vegetation together in the early morning and late afternoon. The covey spends midday in shaded, brushy spots screened from predators, such as a wash or vegetated fenceline where the birds take dust baths, preen, and sleep. Coveys tend to be family groups with an adult pair and up to 16 young that stay together in a home range well into fall. In winter, several coveys often combine to feed together. By later winter or early spring, these larger coveys break up again, and a few birds —mainly juveniles and males—join new coveys. As the breeding season approaches, male Gambel’s Quail find an elevated perch—often a fence post, tree, or shrub—and give a kaa or cow call. Courting males perform a ritualized foraging display called “tidbitting” to attract a mate. As a female approaches, the tidbitting male extends his legs, fans his tail, and stands with his head near the ground and tail in the air. He may also offer the female bits of food. Gambel’s Quail are considered socially monogamous, but some females desert a mate and her brood to take a new mate and lay another clutch, leaving her original partner to raise the chicks on his own.

The Namib Desert is often referred to as the world's oldest desert and has been in existence for some 43 million years, remaining unchanged in its present form for the last 2 million years. The Namib is an immense expanse of relentlessly moving gravel plains and dunes of all shapes and sizes that stretch along the entire coastline.

The temps have struggled to get out of the 30s the last few days in Nevada County. We've also enjoyed a winter mix of rain, hail, and snow. A month ago, I was doing my rain dance, trying to petition the gods for rain. Now, I'm dreaming of wintering in the Sonoran Desert where the air is warm and the views are inspirational.

I woke up to the rare drizzling rain in San Diego, grabbed my camera, and walked barefoot to this beauty.

A herd of desert bighorn sheep in Utah, this group is hanging out below Dead Horse State Park along the Potash Road in the Shafer Basin.

On a chilly, overcast morning this herd was gathering on the red rocks, seeking some warmth, no doubt. Climbing from the road level up along the strata, they stopped when we did, probably to be photographed, which I was happy to oblige. They were as interested in observing us as we were in watching them. Eventually, they got bored, however, and after posing and laying on the rocks for a few minutes, the proceeded on their way up the rocks as we drove deeper into the canyon.

Not a bad start to a day exploring the White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park.

Congrats on Explore!
