Delhi Solidarity Group (DSG) and Centre for Financial Accountability (CFA) organised the felicitation ceremony of Com. Dr Thomas Franco, former General Secretary of All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) and Com. Soumya Dutta, the new General Secretary, AIBOC. The felicitation was followed by a lecture on “Crisis in Public Sector Banks and Importance of Bank Unions” by Prof C P Chandrasekhar, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, JNU.

Com. Franco was recognised for leading AIBOC — the largest bank officers’ organisation with a membership of around 3,20,000 officers— at a time when the Public Sector Banks are facing a huge crisis due to demonetisation, rising NPAs, FRDI bill, and various scams. Under his leadership, the AIBOC reached out to civil society and other trade unions to form a united front against the attack on Public Sector Institutions, and took initiatives like the People’s Parliament and Save Public Sector.

Com. Soumya Datta, the new General Secretary of AIBOC, was also felicitated in the meeting. Datta has been an active member of the trade union for the last 28 years. His involvement in the union started even during his student days as a part of Students Federation of India. As the General Secretary, State Bank Officers’ Confederation, Bengal Circle, he had strived to reach out to the poor and rural areas. At a time when the Public Sector Banks are in a fight for survival, his people-oriented leadership is a much-needed one.

The felicitation would be followed by a lecture on “Crisis in Public Sector Banks and Importance of Bank Unions” by Prof C P Chandrasekhar, Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, JNU. Since the last two decades, Prof Chandrasekhar has been writing on the neo-liberal policies. He is also the author of The Market that Failed: Neo-Liberal Economic Reforms in India.
