To quote a Judas Priest song, Delivering the Goods, I think that is exactly what's happening here. As the southbound Coastal Classic crosses Upper Trail Lake into the tiny berg of Moose Pass all a passenger has to do is look out the window and be in awe of what they see before them. Unfortunately all days are not like this one especially this summer with the amount of rain we have received. 9.02.22

Barely a month old, WM SD45 #7445 is seen wearing it's as-delivered red, white, and black paint scheme on July 13th 1969 at Port Covington. You'll notice the initial lack of black paint over the grills and radius of the long hood, and the lack of white background behind the road numbers. This engine later became CSX 4618 and was retired circa 2007. It was purchased by the George's Creek Central, but it appears it arrived at Metro East Industries in St. Louis ten years ago and never left. Who knows what the future holds for this one. Delivered as a HC-144A but upgraded in 2022 to HC-144B standard, which encompasses the Ocean Sentry Refresh (OSR) modifications (installation of a new flight management system, which serves as the primary avionics computer for communication control, navigation and equipment monitoring) and the Minotaur mission system, which integrates installed sensors and radar and provides dramatically improved data fusion as well as information-processing and sharing capabilities.

In a country full of spectacular waterfalls, and despite the obvious drawback in that one can never expect to experience this place alone, Skógafoss has been the one to set my pulses on red alert each time I’ve visited. Ok, so that’s only twice - well three times if you count the very brief pit stop we made here on the long journey east to Stafafell - but the mere sight of it makes for a display of extraordinary power. Not only in terms of the improbable physics that are happening right there in front of you, but also in the hold that it will take on your senses as you stand here at the bottom. Sixty metres tall and twenty-five wide, this is where the highlands end abruptly as that huge curtain of water crosses the divide and plummets down to earth in a resounding crescendo right there in front of you. There are bigger waterfalls in Iceland, but you can’t stand underneath many of them like this. And this one has such pleasing dimensions, that clean and uncomplicated single drop perfectly proportioned and surrounded by clouds of vapour that make you wonder whether you should have brought some shower gel and a bath towel. And a thermos full of piping hot coffee to help with the hypothermia afterwards.

We’d come here after breakfast on our third morning in the area, having agreed that the misty grey conditions would suit the subject well. Ironic that when we’d passed through here a week earlier, there had been a bright rainbow right in front of Skógafoss. There had also been a large number of visitors, taking endless Instaselfies as they tripped from their coaches and raced excitedly towards the action. That day we had to wait for a space in the large car park, such was the popularity of the place. Finding the visitor numbers too distracting, we soon moved on, although perhaps we should have photographed that rainbow and made merry with the clone tool later. At that stage we were getting rather blasé on the subject, having spent the previous day photographing a particularly fine example at Háifoss. But there were no more waterfall rainbows for the rest of the trip, and little did we realise we’d missed our chance.

Arriving in the middle of the morning seemed to have paid off. Although far from empty, the car park was noticeably quieter than last time, and with the aid of that trusty pair of welly boots I was soon paddling about in the shallow river, setting the tripod low to bring that foreground rush of water towards the bottom of the frame. And miraculously in these moments there were chances to get the shot with only minimum numbers of stragglers to contend with. There’s always someone standing as close as they dare to, but I only had to airbrush two spectres from the scene here. Bring your wellies and you can often go to places where others can’t.

Last time we came to Iceland, on that final night before heading back to Reykjavík, I got what became my favourite shot of the trip in the form of “Sandwich Bags, Spray and Spectators,” where I was that person standing as close to the white wall as I dared to. And now, an hour after this, I took my favourite shot of this second adventure with “The Watchers.” Very possibly my two most loved images of all time in fact - from a personal point of view anyway. I’m starting to wonder whether or not it’s a coincidence the place delivers pictures that make me feel this happy. I’m quite content with this one as well for that matter. While Skógafoss keeps giving me moments like these, I’ll carry on coming back for more.

GB: In 1977 ASEA delivered 6 class Rm locomotives to SJ. They are much like the Rc4 locomotives but have additional weight to have more adhesion. they were meant to succeed the Dm3 locomotives on the ore line and for some time they actually hauled ore trains, but this was not succesfull. In the 198ties they wandered to other freight traffic. in 2023 the 6 locomotives Rm 1257-1262 were sold to TAGAB.

On the picture is an empty ore train Narvik - Kiruna approaching Vassijaure with two Rm-locos hauling, the first of which Rm 1259. the loco in the middle is an Rc4. The weather was freezing cold, worsened by strong winds. To take the picture I took cross country ski's and skied my way to this photo spot.

As many opine for the days when the Bozeman Local ran like clockwork and with clean power, no doubt people such as Mark Hemphill yearn for when the MRL #405 plied the rails as DRGW #3047. Although the tonnage on this day won't make a dent in the speed, even with a 1.9% grade ahead, the #405 undoubtedly saw mountain territory in its previous life. The #3047 was one of 22 GP35's delivered to the DRGW between 1964/65. Like most of the GP35 fleet, it lasted just about 28 years, being retired in Dec 1993 along with 17 others. An interesting note is that all 22 GP35's were made to be trailing unit only in 1972, removing cab seats, toilets and radios. I am unsure if this lasted until their retirement or if they were made lead qualified again at some point. Thanks to utahrails.net for the great details! Its an interesting note that by now the #405 has spent close to or more time on the Montana Rail Link than it did the Denver and Rio Grande Western. Time marches on!

Good or bad, divine or not, or just a bird doing its thing. This crow let me approach quite a bit before it started cawing and, then, got away. Crows play a prominent role in northern European folklore - the crow was Odin's precious bird. Small wonder that in a Christian perspective its reputation is low. I don't think the crows are bothered by this. If there is a bird that will outlive humanity, it's the crow.

Artist Glen Wilson part of the ReGrowthRiverside art installation in Riverside Park. The photo was printed on vinyl, then cut into strips and woven into the fence - it depicts a mail carrier - one from Harlem and one from California - the other photo is around the corner.

Passing by Union Jct, I saw East Hump had an approach medium to come off the Cutoff. Checking ATCS I saw that a UP move was lined to go the Old Way at St. Anthony to the cutoff so I headed for Snelling Avenue to see if there was a shot 20 minutes after sunrise. Fortunately by the time they came into view the scene had opened up enough to let some light in. A pair of EMDs head for the Belt Yard at 0600 hrs with another short transfer.

An Erie Mining C420 has air dumps of ore or perhaps overburden. We managed to work our way into some behind the scenes action on the Erie Mining. Cool stuff for sure and no one gave us a second look.

2023 has been a poor year for rail photography. My desire to travel has meant that I have spent time at work to pay for holidays and run. out of time to visit the line side. Fingers crossed 2024 will be a little more fruitful from a railway perspective.

Last week we got called 3rd! Wow! Thank You! I wasn't expecting that at all and its the highest placing we have recieved in this competition so far. I hope that me and Xion can continue to be deliver good enough photos in order to stay in this competition!

So for this weeks theme we had to be 'Gaga 4 Gaga' which ment our models had to model fashions inspired by the legendary queen of pop, Lady GaGa! The insperation for my photo is this one; michaelpeck.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/lady-gaga-david-l.... Hopefully you can see the insperation I used! This theme was quite difficult actually and I spent alot of time doing Xion's hair (it took a lot of hairspray!) and making the newspaper outfit. Hopefully we fit the brief and hopefully we will get to stay another week in the competition!

Hope you like it! :)
