The Northern Lights are not easy to see. Even if you spend a few weeks of the year 500 miles north of Toronto at 49 degrees, 34 minutes latitude. Luckily my wife was following Aurora Alerts and other websites a week ago today, on our last night at the cottage before returning to the city. I saw the Northern Lights last year, but this year’s display was more vibrant and active. There is still light pollution at the cottage and you need time for your eyes to adjust, but it’s all worth the experience. We went out to the dock around 10:30 for a couple of viewings but we had to set the alarm and wake up around 2:30am for (our) phase 2 which was more vibrant and active than the earlier viewing. The naked eye showed mostly pale green hues with some little faint orange edges and splashes of movement.
I started with some handheld shots, but I quickly realized it would need some more care with the settings if I wanted good shots. Shots were taken with our Fuji X-S20 mirrorless camera with a 18mm f1.4 lens. I used a sturdy tripod and a 2 second shutter delay for some of the shots to avoid any chance of camera shake. I manually focused on the stars and on the lit cottages at times. I used a lower ISO (1600) for less noise and closed the aperture down a few stops (higher than fully open f1.4). Shutter speed was manually set at 8secs.
I did edit my shots. I used the JPGs not the RAWs. Just knowing that the camera is picking up colour better than the human eye gives you a little artistic license to make some enhancements.
I raised highlights and shadows for the sky with some general noise reduction.
I waited for 6 hours at this airport... People came and went... I also ate instant Mie Goreng at the store.

But fans were not dampened
Megan Moroney, despite the delay because of lightning in the middle of her set, and Tyler Hubbard lit up the Bobcat stage at the York State Fair on Friday night, drawing in hordes of enthusiastic fans. The dynamic duo both put on a captivating performance that had the crowd jumping to their feet and singing along to every song. With their spirited tunes and magnetic stage presence, Moroney and Hubbard delivered an unforgettable concert experience that left everyone wanting more. The York State Fair proved to be the perfect setting for this electric show, providing a lively and energetic atmosphere that perfectly complemented the high-octane performance.
