(June 17, 2010) More than 50 stereoscopic images provided by the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog of the Library of Congress and a specially developed projection process now make it possible to view fascinating photos made around the year 1900 on a 16×9 meter screen in 3D. This excursion embarks from Deep Space in the Ars Electronica Center; the itinerary includes the Panama Canal construction site, Hong Kong harbor, and idyllic cottages in the hills of Ireland

The California Nebula (NGC 1499/Sh2-220) is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It is so named because it appears to resemble the outline of the US State of California on long exposure photographs. It is almost 2.5° long on the sky and, because of its very low surface brightness, it is extremely difficult to observe visually. It can be observed with a Hα filter (isolates the Hα line at 656 nm) or Hβ filter (isolates the Hβ line at 486 nm) in a rich-field telescope under dark skies. It lies at a distance of about 1,000 light years from Earth. Its fluorescence is due to excitation of the Hβ line in the nebula by the nearby prodigiously energetic O7 star, Xi Persei.

The California Nebula was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884.

By coincidence, the California Nebula transits in the zenith in central California as the latitude matches the declination of the object.

This image shows the Summer Triangle asterism with the glorious Cygnus region of the Milky Way in the background. The shot was taken at Kielder Observatory in Northumberland, the exceptionally dark skies at that location allowing me to capture the full majesty of the view towards the centre of our home galaxy. In the image, the Summer Triangle acts as a nice boundary to this beautiful and dynamic part of the Milky Way and many other objects can be seen in the image. Brocchi's Cluster, more commonly known as the Coathanger asterism, stands out particularly well. This image was taken with an unmodified Canon 600D, using the standard 18-55mm kit lens and a basic tripod. It is made up of 57, 8 second exposures combined using DeepSkyStacker software.

Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and the largest planet within the Solar System. It is a gas giant with mass one-thousandth that of the Sun but is two and a half times the mass of all the other planets in our Solar System combined. Jupiter is classified as a gas giant along with Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
