November 14th, 2020 is Deepavali, the Festival of Lights celebrated by a billion Indians around the world. It is also colloquially called Diwali. It celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

Diwali is a universally applicable and secular sentiment, not just tied to Hindu religion. Although many people do go to temples, it is more of a social event than a religious one. It is based on a lunar calendar, so the date changes from year to year.

Highlights of the festival include lighting lamps and fireworks. Diwali is also typically the start of the holiday season leading into the new year. A lot of people buy new clothes at this time of the year. And of course, eat a lot of great food, especially sweets.

I wish all my Flickr friends a happy Diwali!

The festival of lamps is here. Taken at home, using an oil lamp (bought for Rs. 7 from a road side vendor), a black screen. The lamp is placed on glass and little bit of painting by a pen torch is used to illuminate the faces of Ganapathi (Lord Ganesha) and Devi.

Deepavali is a Sanskrit word - Deepa meaning light and Avali, meaning a row. In Hinduism, across many parts of India and Nepal, it is the homecoming of Rama after a 14-year exile in the forest and his victory over Ravana. In the legend, the people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (dĭpa). - taken from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepavali)

Kolams are a mainly South Indian style of colorful drawings formed using colored powders, often rice chalk or rock powder. [ Click and zoom in for a closer look. ]

Kolams have become an almost de rigueur ornament at Malaysian shopping malls and hotels to mark the Deepavali/Diwali festival. This rather long form one was at the Mid-Valley Mall in Kuala Lumpur.

Deepavali is a mainly Hindu (but also marked by Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists) festival and it celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil.

Deepavali celebrated at home

I guess you can consider this as a super belated birthday haul?! Or early Christmas presents... hahah!! XD Am so happy to be able to get some BAM parts. The Hotwheels Carnival Steamer has been in my wishlist, was surprised to see it at TRU. I guess they still have the older stocks around since the pandemic caused the mall to close for months...

Wishing all my Hindu friends at Flickr a Joyous New Year! Cheers!

Serangoon Road | Singapore

Every year, the whole stretch of Serangoon Road is lit up with elegantly designed arches of light, brightening Little India and its nearby districts.

I’ve always wanted to capture the festival’s lights, but every year I find a reason not to do so. However, this time, no more excuses. Without further ado, here is an image of the colorful lights of Serangoon Road, in celebration of Deepavali.

From Singapore, and across the world, Happy Deepavali everyone!

PS: Notice the cars in front of me moving? I was in the middle of the road while capturing this image and was almost run over buy a truck behind me! Kids, don’t try this at home! LOL

The word "Deepavali" means row of lamps. Diwali or Deepavali involves the lighting of small clay lamps (diyas or deep) filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. It is a major Indian festival that is very significant in Hinduism.
