Day 2: Crossed the Continental Divide via Coon Pass, with the
goal of reaching Upper Deep Creek Lake via a xc route. Chronic rain
thwarted that plan, and we kept to the trails, which often disappeared, at
one point leading us astray. In perfect conditions, this section would have
been wholly delightful, as we missed many views. Our camp was right off
the trail, and we were holed up for many hours. During the blackest
moments, Per's orange pack cover remained the sole light on the horizon. Coon Pass is one of the easiest passes I have ever done. The
approach was a twisty up and down woodsy walk following game trails,
climbing over the occasional talus patch. Views were minimal, and we had no
'obvious' point in which to navigate (ie, the low point). We popped out of
the scrub timber on a flat patch, and I saw a faint game trail that wound
through the timber. After 30 seconds Coon Lake came into view!
9.4 miles and ~ 1880 feet of elevation gain.
