Finally got around to declutter the cables on the floor around our sideboard.
It might not look like there would be a lot of cable, but there are a lot of gadgets behind the sliding doors.
Foreground shows our new shag rug, "Dover" from Nylanders Mattor.
I had to ask myself why we have so many cords now that we're living in a wireless world. We've never even used most of these cords and a/v cables. They're going to the second-hand store. Next project: the incandescent light bulbs.

Today I am 46 and it's been a great day! This was taken as I left to go out to dinner with my children. It's been a busy, but good year. I'm setting a few goals for myself to push myself in a new direction this year.
1) Juicing. My first juice fast starts tomorrow. bought a juicer and this will keep me on track with my clean eating.
2) Pass the CBEST exams...prepping me to get a job in California one of these years.
3) Continue to help develop the gifted program I helped start for my school district.
4) See to it that my kids transition to college, HS and Jr.High smoothly.
5) Stay fit.
6) Take more photos
7) Clean eat.
8) Declutter. Get rid of things I no longer need or use. I'm pretty good but it's time to purge.
I'm sure there is more.
Here's to my 46th year!
Tonight I cleared out the rubbish that was my make up. it was full of cheap gimmicky rubbish. Now, less so.
I am trying to declutter one small area of my house at a time.
One of my favorite backyard posers last year, the young Verdin are foraging in my Baja Fairy Duster again this summer. You can see a little yellow coming in on this juvenile's head. The stucco wall behind the plant created a nice bokeh for me; I did "prune" a few small branches to declutter the composition.

Another view, with mirror "window" on left, and reflections bringing in light. Good angle to see the too-long patio window that hangs over from the file cabinets on right.
In-process paper and files easily stash under the patio glass overhang. I was too cheap to have a glass piece cut to fit the file cabinets, but I found a tempered glass window that fit -- sort of. (Thanks, Freecycle.org.) Hence the overhang, which has been a serendipitous blessing. I shove papers underneath when I leave the office, and the desk always looks tidy. The computer mouse and keyboard sit on a glass shelf under the desk surface - when I push the shef in, they 'disappear' visually.
In 2002, I was managing a Newspaper company - and we were selling mugs for the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The production team managed to deface a mug with a picture of me. Now I don't drink tea or coffee and this couldn't go in the dishwasher and I'm trying to declutter. So tell me why I am still keeping this.

Of course they're perfect for shops, cafes, bars and restaurants however they're proving just perfect for storage solutions at home.
vintage porcelain teacup. . .purging some vintage goodies in a new etsy shop called wolfiedigs. It's not a new venture or direction, just a way to declutter the house a bit (I hope!)
There were a few reasons why I needed/wanted to get out for a drive today. I am wondering if the fact that I have had house mice is having an ill effect on my health. I have spent so much time the last few weeks, trying to declutter and get rid of a lot of stuff, and I'm not sure if I have disturbed the mouse spray and been breathing it in. You can't vacuum when you've had mice, so I haven't been doing that, but you still disturb things when sorting and moving belongings. I always have a cough - for years, and they couldn't find out the cause - but it has been worse recently. Anyway, I thought I would get out into the fresh air for a few hours today. Also, the forecast was for clouds and I thought this might be easier to drive in. The sun recently has been so glaringly bright and it affects my eyes. Note to self - must get my eyes checked sometime this year!
So, on this cloudy, low-light day, I made my way east of the city, hoping to maybe see an owl of some sort. I quickly checked to see if any Short-eared Owls were to be seen, though I knew it was probably too early in the day for them to be out. No sign of one at all. Time to drive a few back roads in case there was a Snowy Owl in sight. Some of the roads I travelled were ones that I hadn't driven before, which was good for me. Though I have been east of the city many times over the years, I have still only driven a few of the roads myself. I was fortunate to find two Snowy Owls; first a beautiful, streaked female, and then on a different road, a handsome male who flew off when I was still half a mile down the road.
There was still time to go back to look for a Short-eared Owl and this time, there were several of them. Most of the time, they were either flying far away or landing in the middle of a huge field. However, at the end, one did land on a post and stayed there for quite some time. Awkward to photograph, though, when there are other cars and photographers. I couldn't see anything at first, as there were two cars in front of me. In the end, I got out of my car and carefully stood between the two vehicles - couldn't see well around the first car and couldn't move out any further otherwise I would have blocked a friend's long lens behind me. I suspected that my photos were blurry because of the front car and for my last few photos, I moved around and stood away from the heat rising from the vehicle. That made a difference - now I have several somewhat sharper images, and an awful lot of blurry shots to delete. Sigh ....
A young relative of one of the landowners came across the field and I had quite a long, interesting talk with him. He wondered what all the cars in the area were doing and I explained about the owls and that we were all birders/photographers. He said his grandmother was so worried and stressed out - quite afraid. I told him that I am always concerned when photographers do this, as I know it must make some landowners nervous (understandably, with the crime rate in rural areas), and told him to please apologize to his grandma, and to also reassure her that we are all good, harmless people, interested only in trying to get photos of the owls.
Another reason to get out today was that we are about to have a drastic change in our weather! For wekks now, we have been enjoying much milder winter weather, but on Sunday, 3 February, the forecast is for a high of -22C (windchill -31C). A high of -24C for Monday.

This baseball cap is from a winery I LOVE. I have owned it for 4 years and worn it exactly 0 times. I've been saving it for the day I'll wear it but, let's face it, that day isn't coming. Off to Goodwill it goes!
A Hot Spot is an area, when left unattended will grow and take over the whole room as well as making the house look awful.
Yes, I know that. My craft room is a perfect example of that tragedy and the room is actually a one huge Hot Spot. Another one is the dinner table in our living room. I just happened to clean that up last Sunday and it's been pretty ok since that, so I bravely entered the craft room. We've had more Hot Spots when we didn't have a toddler. Everything's out of his reach now, so dinner table it is!
FlyLady says: "Now I want you to set your timer for 2 minutes and let's practice putting out your Hot Spot. You don’t have to work till you have finished; just do what you can in 2 minutes."
This is my desk in my craft room. The room has been in a horrible state for ages. The whole desk is full of stuff, but I had to choose one corner because of the limited time. It still took me 8 minutes instead of two. I couldn't stop, but fixed two corners instead of one.
Conclusion: I really need a small paper shredder. I've been talking about that for years. I don't feel comfortable to put my bills and other personal papers to the recycle bin outside the house. I tear the papers to pieces, but that takes time and I'm still not happy with the result, so these papers just keep lying around. What I also need is a proper trash bin in the carft room. I only have a plastic bag and it's not nice or handy in any way.
Look, I found candy! They will take care of themselves quickly, I promise!
"Do you have areas like this that continue to grow if left alone? Does the rest of the family see this as a place to put things when they do not want to put them where they belong? It is our job to nip this in the bud. Get rid of that pile, find the surface underneath, and stop the Hot Spot from becoming a raging Clutter inferno!"
