Damn, I got a lot of DVDs! Time to declutter...

I took Week #2 Paper Challenge to the extreme! There was paper everywhere, be it bound in books or magazines. It really was time to conquer my room of shame!

This is a very thrifty/upcycled bag. The only new material used was some thread. The hedgehog was from a pattern that I found in a thrift store magazine. The doily it is stitched on was given to me by a friend, who got it from the thrift store they volunteer at. The buttons were from another friend. The yellow and red fabric was from a friend of a friend, who was moving and had to declutter their craft supplies. I'm very proud of how it turned out.

I've been having a really good declutter in the last few weeks, in preparation for our house move. I've thrown away six big boot loads of STUFF. Where does it all come from? In the process, Charlotte and Sophie have discovered the Playmobil pirate ship that had been sitting on top of a wardrobe for years, forgotten about. They love it and haven't put it down since we found it. It caught my eye this morning that the crewmates were all brides. As you do.

I am trying to declutter one small area of my house at a time.

The International Heart pattern was created by Girard in 1967 with the Miller catalog Billing it as a "tribute of love and friendship." The older we get, the more experiences we collect into our bags (and women’s bags ain't light) … but in the end, it doesn't matter! Declutter & leave only what adds into ONE BIG cumulative ❤️

I had to ask myself why we have so many cords now that we're living in a wireless world. We've never even used most of these cords and a/v cables. They're going to the second-hand store. Next project: the incandescent light bulbs.

day 43/365

In 2002, I was managing a Newspaper company - and we were selling mugs for the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The production team managed to deface a mug with a picture of me. Now I don't drink tea or coffee and this couldn't go in the dishwasher and I'm trying to declutter. So tell me why I am still keeping this.

I love having my spices in a drawer. Easy to see. Easy to use. In the drawer under the counter where I put recipes together. Very handy.

Using peg board to declutter a desk.

Sheets and linens. I kept two sets of sheets for each bed (complete sets with pillow cases, etc) and then 3 sets for Logan's bed. I also put the blanket we use in the car and a extra set of curtians in there because there was so much space on top of our table clothes. And speaking of tableclothes... I only kept three and the one we use for the kids forts (huge, and white).

This is pretty much the only area of the kitchen that is used for cooking. I need to declutter and organize the shelves better. I need to have our knives sharpened, and the burnt out under-cabinet bulbs replaced. A good cleaning is needed as well after all the dust from remodeling.

the world hides beautiful things from us until we learn to declutter the world that we discover the fascinating scenes

This one seemed very unusual. I'm guessing it is the husband and father of the deceased wife and child. Was it normal to have photographs taken like this one?

As the photographer was local I thought the grave maybe in a local cemetery. I phoned Norwich City Council to see if it was in Earlham Cemetery. Indeed it was, Section M Plot 438. I checked today but I couldn't find the headstone. I was told that it is now classed as a "common grave" and headstones sometimes get removed. I think this is/was a common practice and happens when the relatives of the deceased don't buy a plot in perpetuity or no longer pay for the upkeep of a plot. Someone else had been buried in the plot along with the Lawes.

About 20 years ago, the photographs were left to my parents in a Will by their next door neighbour of 30 years. At the time I said I'd look after them. Decluttering the attic I found the box with them all in. Many of them were taken in Norwich photography studios. I'm trying to date them as there's not much information on them. I guess they must be late 19C. They are not being added to the declutter pile. I'll carry on looking after them.

Finally got around to declutter the cables on the floor around our sideboard.

It might not look like there would be a lot of cable, but there are a lot of gadgets behind the sliding doors.

i loved taht while declutter and setting up the table, i re-discovered so many small treasures from the past, - the card of an ornie from tricia joy, cards from textile postcard swaps, an old drawing and sewn header for my blog, a clipping form a mangazine with some wise words, postcards where more the color matters than the real subject.

i got out two of my favorite cups from years ago, given to me/my children from friends.

the little bird was treasure, still wrapped to not get damaged, and in desperate need for a home, - it'll keep on reminding me to trust my wings ;-)

Day 2 turned out a load more stuff that had been hanging around making the place look untidy for months.

Clockwise from left hand corner:

A cross stitch kit that had been given as a free gift with a magazine. It wasn’t a design that I would usually stitch and had been stashed away in a drawer. Thought it was about time I let go: this was Freecycled to another crafter.

A white padded cot bumper. This was acquired when I got a cot from Freecycle for my grandson. I didn’t really want the bumper but took it as a favour. Maybe I should learn to say no! This was given with the bag of clothes to a Freecycler who was giving it to the National Childbirth Trust for one of their sales to raise funds.

A 3kg box of biological washing powder. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just that I changed to liquid tablets when I bought my new machine so the powder wouldn’t bung the pipes up. I Freecycled this too.

A Happy Birthday gift bag. My daughter gave me my birthday present in this last weekend, and it is too nice to throw away (not that I would anyway). It is one of my friend’s 50th birthday next week, and this is the ideal size to put her present in, so I am going to re-use it.

A quarter tin of baby milk. This was left over from when my grandson was first born. He was on this milk until he was put on a higher calorie milk by the hospital. This was left over, and I didn’t think anyone would use an opened tin of powdered baby milk. I kept it for about 3 months but couldn’t think of what to do with it, so I tipped the powder into my green cone food digester, and my mum will have the empty tub for her craft room.

A china teapot. I used to collect teapots and had them all on top of the kitchen cupboards, till I got bored with dusting them! Most of them were given to a charity earlier in the year, but this one I found hiding in a box in the garage. I am going to give this to the Oxfam charity shop.

A burgundy furry hat and gloves. I rescued this from a jumble sale way back in February. It was brand new and had been given to a local school’s jumble/boot sale. Anything not sold at the end of the sale goes to a dealer who gives the school a pittance for it. I thought I could use it for something, but as I never wear hats and the gloves are too tight, I am going to give it to a lady who collects clothes for a homeless shelter in London.

A pile of magazines that I had read and cut bits out of for my collages. I could put these in the roadside recycling bags, but I offered them on Freecycle and another crafter is taking them.

Two letters addressed to the previous owner of our house. We moved here in April 1998, so I reckon after 10 ½ years they should have told everyone that they’d moved! I re-addressed these and put them back in the post.

Finally – a big bag of boy’s clothes that I received from another Freecycler for my grandson. They advertised them as age 6 – 12 months, but most of them were older, and far too big. My grandson is tiny for his age and will take a year or so to grow into them, so I gave them to a Freecycler who is going to take them to a National Childbirth Trust sale.

And that was Day 2’s offerings. This is easy! I still have loads more places to look for stuff so I am confident that I can do 10 days’ worth of decluttering.

Somehow I worked up some energy to declutter the back closet, home of the recycling bin, along with child-sized rollerblades, a softball mitt, a gallon of white glue, and every old paper and plastic bag it ever seemed important to keep. This white bag was headed straight for the recycling bin when I suddenly noticed the red tissue paper. Score!

I have just had my first foray into the world of eBay. As part of my Project Declutter, we're getting rid of a few things, including some outgrown toys. I had fun setting up Kalu's knights for a last foray. I am particularly fond of the dragons!

The boxes can be put any direction, and have a place for labels so everything can be put in its right place!

There were a few reasons why I needed/wanted to get out for a drive today. I am wondering if the fact that I have had house mice is having an ill effect on my health. I have spent so much time the last few weeks, trying to declutter and get rid of a lot of stuff, and I'm not sure if I have disturbed the mouse spray and been breathing it in. You can't vacuum when you've had mice, so I haven't been doing that, but you still disturb things when sorting and moving belongings. I always have a cough - for years, and they couldn't find out the cause - but it has been worse recently. Anyway, I thought I would get out into the fresh air for a few hours today. Also, the forecast was for clouds and I thought this might be easier to drive in. The sun recently has been so glaringly bright and it affects my eyes. Note to self - must get my eyes checked sometime this year!

So, on this cloudy, low-light day, I made my way east of the city, hoping to maybe see an owl of some sort. I quickly checked to see if any Short-eared Owls were to be seen, though I knew it was probably too early in the day for them to be out. No sign of one at all. Time to drive a few back roads in case there was a Snowy Owl in sight. Some of the roads I travelled were ones that I hadn't driven before, which was good for me. Though I have been east of the city many times over the years, I have still only driven a few of the roads myself. I was fortunate to find two Snowy Owls; first a beautiful, streaked female, and then on a different road, a handsome male who flew off when I was still half a mile down the road.

There was still time to go back to look for a Short-eared Owl and this time, there were several of them. Most of the time, they were either flying far away or landing in the middle of a huge field. However, at the end, one did land on a post and stayed there for quite some time. Awkward to photograph, though, when there are other cars and photographers. I couldn't see anything at first, as there were two cars in front of me. In the end, I got out of my car and carefully stood between the two vehicles - couldn't see well around the first car and couldn't move out any further otherwise I would have blocked a friend's long lens behind me. I suspected that my photos were blurry because of the front car and for my last few photos, I moved around and stood away from the heat rising from the vehicle. That made a difference - now I have several somewhat sharper images, and an awful lot of blurry shots to delete. Sigh ....

A young relative of one of the landowners came across the field and I had quite a long, interesting talk with him. He wondered what all the cars in the area were doing and I explained about the owls and that we were all birders/photographers. He said his grandmother was so worried and stressed out - quite afraid. I told him that I am always concerned when photographers do this, as I know it must make some landowners nervous (understandably, with the crime rate in rural areas), and told him to please apologize to his grandma, and to also reassure her that we are all good, harmless people, interested only in trying to get photos of the owls.

Another reason to get out today was that we are about to have a drastic change in our weather! For wekks now, we have been enjoying much milder winter weather, but on Sunday, 3 February, the forecast is for a high of -22C (windchill -31C). A high of -24C for Monday.

Ikea Vika Curry legs. I used 6 spaced somewhat evenly across the desk surface. They're very sturdy and $5 each from Ikea.com

Bags of clothing that await recycling. Sadly, we will never lose enough weight to fit into those 90s fashions again and by the time the 90s fashions come back in style, we'll be too old to wear them.

Very messy before shot of my home office I let it go way to long before cleaning, including typical paper clutter, as well as toys on the floor as well as other junk that didn't belong in the office in the first place.
