Europe, The Netherlands, Overijssel, Hengelo station, Blauwnet regional train (slightly cut)

We just returned from a delightful stay in the lovely eastern part of the Netherlands.

Since December 2017 the train service there is operated by Blauwnet (belonging to the French Keolis group) - before that, it was handled by the Dutch Railways (NS). The change was a result of the decentralization/privatization of railway lines through public tenders.

Candy-O, I need you

Sunday dress, ruby ring

Candy-O, I need you so

Could you help me in?

Purple hum, assorted cards

Razor lights you'll bring

And all to prove

you're on the move

And vanishing

Candy-O, I need you so

Candy-O, I need you so

Edge of night, distract yourself

Obstacles don't work

Homogenize, decentralize

It's just a quirk

Different ways to see you through

All the same in the end

Peculiar star,

that's who you are

Do you have to win?

Candy-O, I need you so

Candy-O, I need you so

Candy-O, I need you so

Candy-O, I need you so

As mentioned, this area, where currents converge from opposite parts of Europe (but even, also directly, from Asia, Africa, North America, Greenland and Arctic) with high rainfall (here up to 2600mm/year) due to its proximity to the Adriatic Sea, was among the snowiest and coldest in continental Europe until the end of the 20th century.

Until the mid-1980s, in March, there was an average of 1 to 3 meters of snow at this altitude (generally above 1200m a.s.l.) on the northern Dinarides, especially on the internal slopes with respect to the Adriatic, namely those belonging to the Danube-Black Sea water catchment, given that the coastal Dinaric main range is also the main and very decentralized watershed between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

As many as 4 climatic zones overlap in a few kilometers from the Adriatic catchment to the Danube hinterland, which here starts 25 linear km E/NE of Trieste, that reduces to 6-10km linear along the northern coast of continental Croatia.

All this favored abundant snowfall, while the absence of the Alpine shield, whose mountain range in this area is decreasing in thickness and altitude, allowed long and icy outflows of Russian-Siberian origin currents, through the local wind called Bora/Burja/Bura, with temperatures well below zero for many consecutive days even along the coasts and snowstorms when the Mediterranean responded with the overthrust of humid and less cold masses coming from it.

Hoar frosting and hard riming phenomena were common from November to early April, with accumulations of ice crystals on the windward slopes and on the peaks, which could reach a thickness of several meters, since the Bora wind could blow continuously even for 3 consecutive weeks with averages close to 100kmph, bringing low clouds with ice crystals, rising from the soaked internal plains, every minute of every hour of every day of those phases of the weather pattern, frequent phases.

Now the weather pattern has changed markedly over Europe and this is the main cause of the mild winters and unbearable summers, also over central, western and Balkan Europe, in addition to the Mediterranean: from the Russian HP that dominated the European winters we have moved on to the continuous rise of the African HP with evidently opposite effects, and this in all seasons.

All this is now just a distant memory of a child who loved where he lived and is still fascinated by the climatic-botanical variety of this area that includes climates and essences that can be found from Sicily to Scandinavia, but he is certainly sorry that what he grew up with is no longer there, or remains only in small part, a small-great show, increasingly brief.

Vasarely, Icon of the Space Age ...

I remember that Victor Vasarely's art played a big role in the 70s in the decoration of films and also in the haute couture fashion and the distorted geometric patterns effectively emphasized the female body with its curves ;-) ...

Vasarely had a honeycomb building built for his art, with high rooms to exhibit his large paintings, tapestries and half sculptures.

In the middle of the building, he had a false ceiling inserted in two honeycombs, creating another exhibition space, a bar and an interior terrace.

From up there, 2 decentralized hatches allow a view into two 6-cornered exhibition rooms, but this does not allow symmetrical photography, I had to stretch out the arm with the camera to show more than four sides and be careful not to lose balance and fall down ...

from 8 pictures each I have then compiled the photos what was not possible only via software and required a lot of manual work. But the photo conveys the spatial impression and the effect of art ...

On March 26, 1945, American troops liberated the town of Hadamar and the Nazi killing center, ending the murder of the sick, which had claimed nearly 15,000 victims as part of "Action T4" and the subsequent "decentralized euthanasia." During the Nazi regime, people who "only" suffered from depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, were homosexual, or simply had a Jewish parent were killed there. Soldiers who had fought for the Nazi regime were also among the victims. My daughter, who was completing a voluntary social service year at the Hadamar Memorial, gave me access to the gas chambers. In the background, you can see the gas chamber and the "dragging trail" of corpses to the crematorium (the floor was so well-worked that dragging the corpses was easy). My personal favorite is the "emergency exit" sign!

Europe, The Netherlands, Gelderland, Achterhoek, Tiel-Winterswijk line, Vorden, Station, Platform, Arriva Stadler GTW Spurt, Girl (uncut)

The train is an Arriva GTW (Gelenktriebwagen) Spurt (built by Stadler in 2010) with its characteristic small middle unit (2'Bo2' configuration) which is reserved for the diesel-electric power unit.

Since December 2012 the Tiel- Winterswijk service has been operated by Arriva (Deutsche Bahn). Before that, it was handled by the Dutch Railways (NS). The change resulted from the decentralization/privatization of railway lines through public tenders.
