Once again, quoting Dave Bowman from 2001 A Space Odyssey. I took this image a while ago and completely blew it out through over-exposure. However, by fiddling around I got it halfway back to decency and thought I would upload it. A bit blue as I struggled (to excess) to remove the light pollution. Taken a while back and I forget which part of the sky, other than it is clearly part of the milky way. I'll try the astrometry solver but I bet it self-destructs with this one!
Update, it didn't explode and identified the stellar region as the head end of Cygnus and Vulpecula..which I had suspected because I photograph this area frequently.

No guest speaker seems to have been received so enthusiastically at Camp 50 -or, at least, by those who at the time were members of the Camp's Political Working-Group- as Rev Dr Franz Dietrich Meyer-Klügel (1904-1977). Born in Hanover, Dr Meyer-Klügel had been a minister in Göttingen and then in Basel, Switzerland, before entering the UK with his wife and child early in 1939. His lecture on “The Christian's Social and Political Responsibility”, given three times in the main camp and once each at the Garswood, Golborne, Penketh, Bickerstaffe, Aughton Green and Kirkby hostels over 3 days in Sepetember 1946, was heard by approximately 1600 POWs in total. According to a transcript of the lecture preserved at The National Archives, Dr Meyer-Klügel accused several leading churchmen in Germany – including, in particular, Martin Niemöller (1892-1984; author of the famous “First, they came for....” poem, and one of the initiators in 1945 of the “Schuldbekenntnis“ or Declaration of Guilt issued by the German Evangelical Church) - of being supporters of and apologists for the Nazis.* The process that led to the 1945 declaration is also critcised as an attempt to deflect or diffuse the Church's reponsibility for what had happened during the period of Nazi rule. Instead of making such gestures, he says, these “compromised” leaders should “have the decency to step down”:
“If they don't go, let the youth confidently sweep them away. The youth must build the future. The fact that they are now preparing for this is perhaps a manifestation of the Divine purpose behind their imprisonment here...” (my translation).
Dr Meyer-Klügel's post-lecture report to the FO describes Camp 50 as “the best the lecturer has seen so far with regards to re-education and morale”. This was “particularly” due “the work and merit of the Interpreter CSM Bloch”, who had “organised really splendid study groups under the leadership of genuine and active anti-Nazis” and whose imminent departure from the Camp in consequence of his discharge from the Army was “deeply” regretted by them. Several had themselves “been in concentration camps and Nazi prisons for underground anti-Nazi activities” and were able to speak convincingly to the other POWs about their experiences. The report repeats claims by some of the POWs that the Theological Training College at Camp 174 was “a hot-bed for Nazi spirit”, and warns the authorities to be wary of the Protestant leaders at Penketh Hostel and in the main camp who had trained there (respectively, Pastors Baring and Danz).** In addition, says Dr Meyer-Klügel, “the Camp Leader of the Main Camp” - O/Feldw. Dlugosch- “is regarded to be a Nazi, now camouflaged. The study leaders told [me] that about 5 months ago he and some other Nazis came to beat up one of the study leaders because this study leader had recited an anti-militarist poem...”.***
The signatories of the Political Working Group statement include its then chairman, Walter Kresse, a former political prisoner of the Nazis according to the Camp 50 newspaper. I have been unable to make a definite connection but I believe this to have been the same Walter Kresse who was captured by the Americans in North Africa and who later served as Mayor of Leipzig in the GDR.
Dr Meyer-Klügel afterwards became a Unitarian minister, serving congregations in Birmingham, Buxton and Exeter. An essay, “Principles of Augustine's doctrine of the state”, was contributed to “'And other pastors of thy flock': a German tribute to the Bishop of Chichester” published by Cambridge University Press in 1942. He also taught German at Foster's Grammar School for Boys in Sherborne, and was naturalised as a UK citizen in 1949. A file of correspondence “regarding his attacks on the Confessing Church (Bekennende Kirche) in lectures at prisoner of war camps” is preserved in the archives of the German Lutheran Church, Sydenham, at ref. LMA/4288/D/04/030.
*A POW at the Bickerstaffe Hostel evidently concurred with the lecturer's claim that the circumstances of Pastor Niemöller's arrest and detention at the Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg concentration camp had been misrepresented. According to CSM Bloch's report “The POW had been in Oranienburg himself and states that Niemöller never came near the actual Concentration Camp”. Dr Meyer-Klügel and the others may have been unaware, in 1946, of Pastor Niemöller's subsequent incarceration at Dachau. Niemöller did later acknowledge and express regret for his initial support for the Nazis.
**The theological school at Camp 174 Norton Park, near Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, had been set up by the British YMCA with funding from an American businessman, John Barwick. Dr Meyer-Klügel alleges that Gerhard Danz “became a Nazi Party member in 1933”, his “excuse” being that “his schoolmasters compelled him [to do so] when he was still at school and that later on he could not risk his career....”. Dr Martin Baring was “a typical opportunist” who had likewise joined the Party in 1933. Following the lecture he is said to have made “a rather long speech..., mainly agreeing, mostly disagreeing ...., but above all excusing himself for having joined the Nazis. The majority of the audience raised strong objections to his being Camp Pastor...”. Danz's ordination at Camp 174 on 15 May 1946, after which he was “immediately sent out as a camp pastor”, is reported by Director of Studies Dr Gerhard Friedrich in a document transcribed by Matthias Wiendal and Gerhard Schäfer for their book “Leben und Lernen hinter Stacheldraht: die evangelischen Lagergemeinden und theologischen Schulen in England, Italien und Ägypten” (“Living and learning behind barbed wire: the evangelical camp congregations and theological schools in England, Italy and Egypt”; Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2001). I can find no similar record of Dr Baring's ordination. Born into the German-British banking family, he did later hold office in the Disciplinary Court of the German Evangelical Church as well as the presidency of the Senate of the Federal Administrative Court. CSM Bloch likewise describes Dr Baring as “a very suspicious character”. By June 1947, however, he was sufficiently well-regarded as study leader at Penketh to be entrusted with the organisation of political re-education at the Myerscough Hostel.
*** O/Feldw. Dlugosch, rated “B” by the screeners, had been Camp Leader since June 1946. No action seems to have been taken against him as a consequence of Dr Meyer-Klügel's report, but a new CL - St/Fw. Kaesler- was in place by August 1947.

Address on Civil Rights, June 11, 1963

This afternoon, following a series of threats and defiant statements, the presence of Alabama National Guardsmen was required on the University of Alabama to carry out the final and unequivocal order of the United States District Court of the Northern District of Alabama. That order called for the admission of two clearly qualified young Alabama residents who happened to have been born Negro.
That they were admitted peacefully on the campus is due in good measure to the conduct of the students of the University of Alabama, who met their responsibilities in a constructive way.
I hope that every American, regardless of where he lives, will stop and examine his conscience about this and other related incidents. This Nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds. It was founded on the principle that all men are created equal, and that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened.
Today we are committed to a worldwide struggle to promote and protect the rights of all who wish to be free. And when Americans are sent to Viet-Nam or West Berlin, we do not ask for whites only. It ought to be possible, therefore, for American students of any color to attend any public institution they select without having to be backed up by troops.
It ought to be possible for American consumers of any color to receive equal service in places of public accommodation, such as hotels and restaurants and theaters and retail stores, without being forced to resort to demonstrations in the street, and it ought to be possible for American citizens of any color to register and to vote in a free election without interference or fear of reprisal.
It ought to be possible, in short, for every American to enjoy the privileges of being American without regard to his race or his color. In short, every American ought to have the right to be treated as he would wish to be treated, as one would wish his children to be treated.
But this is not the case.
The Negro baby born in America today, regardless of the section of the Nation in which he is born, has about one-half as much chance of completing a high school as a white baby born in the same place on the same day, one-third as much chance of completing college, one-third as much chance of becoming a professional man, twice as much chance of becoming unemployed, about one-seventh as much chance of earning $10,000 a year, a life expectancy which is 7 years shorter, and the prospects of earning only half as much.
This is not a sectional issue. Difficulties over segregation and discrimination exist in every city, in every State of the Union, producing in many cities a rising tide of discontent that threatens the public safety. Nor is this a partisan issue. In a time of domestic crisis men of good will and generosity should be able to unite regardless of party or politics. This is not even a legal or legislative issue alone. It is better to settle these matters in the courts than on the streets, and new laws are needed at every level, but law alone cannot make men see right.
We are confronted primarily with a moral issue. It is as old as the scriptures and is as clear as the American Constitution.
The heart of the question is whether all Americans are to be afforded equal rights and equal opportunities, whether we are going to treat our fellow Americans as we want to be treated. If an American, because his skin is dark, cannot eat lunch in a restaurant open to the public, if he cannot send his children to the best public school available, if he cannot vote for the public officials who represent him, if, in short, he cannot enjoy the full and free life which all of us want, then who among us would be content to have the color of his skin changed and stand in his place? Who among us would then be content with the counsels of patience and delay?
One hundred years of delay have passed since President Lincoln freed the slaves, yet their heirs, their grandsons, are not fully free.
They are not yet freed from the bonds of injustice. They are not yet freed from social and economic oppression.
And this Nation, for all its hopes and all its boasts, will not be fully free until all its citizens are free.
We preach freedom around the world, and we mean it, and we cherish our freedom here at home, but are we to say to the world, and much more importantly, to each other that this is a land of the free except for the Negroes; that we have no second-class citizens except Negroes; that we have no class or cast system, no ghettoes, no master race except with respect to Negroes?
Now the time has come for this Nation to fulfill its promise. The events in Birmingham and elsewhere have so increased the cries for equality that no city or State or legislative body can prudently choose to ignore them.
The fires of frustration and discord are burning in every city, North and South, where legal remedies are not at hand. Redress is sought in the streets, in demonstrations, parades, and protests which create tensions and threaten violence and threaten lives.
We face, therefore, a moral crisis as a country and as a people. It cannot be met by repressive police action. It cannot be left to increased demonstrations in the streets. It cannot be quieted by token moves or talk. It is a time to act in the Congress, in your State and local legislative body and, above all, in all of our daily lives.
It is not enough to pin the blame on others, to say this is a problem of one section of the country or another, or deplore the fact that we face. A great change is at hand, and our task, our obligation, is to make that revolution, that change, peaceful and constructive for all.
Those who do nothing are inviting shame as well as violence. Those who act boldly are recognizing right as well as reality.
Next week I shall ask the Congress of the United States to act, to make a commitment it has not fully made in this century to the proposition that race has no place in American life or law. The Federal judiciary has upheld that proposition in a series of forthright cases. The executive branch has adopted that proposition in the conduct of its affairs, including the employment of Federal personnel, the use of Federal facilities, and the sale of federally financed housing.
But there are other necessary measures which only the Congress can provide, and they must be provided at this session. The old code of equity law under which we live commands for every wrong a remedy, but in too many communities, in too many parts of the country, wrongs are inflicted on Negro citizens and there are no remedies at law. Unless the Congress acts, their only remedy is in the street.
I am, therefore, asking the Congress to enact legislation giving all Americans the right to be served in facilities which are open to the public—hotels, restaurants, theaters, retail stores, and similar establishments.
This seems to me to be an elementary right. Its denial is an arbitrary indignity that no American in 1963 should have to endure, but many do.
I have recently met with scores of business leaders urging them to take voluntary action to end this discrimination and I have been encouraged by their response, and in the last 2 weeks over 75 cities have seen progress made in desegregating these kinds of facilities. But many are unwilling to act alone, and for this reason, nationwide legislation is needed if we are to move this problem from the streets to the courts.
I am also asking Congress to authorize the Federal Government to participate more fully in lawsuits designed to end segregation in public education. We have succeeded in persuading many districts to de-segregate voluntarily. Dozens have admitted Negroes without violence. Today a Negro is attending a State-supported institution in every one of our 50 States, but the pace is very slow.
Too many Negro children entering segregated grade schools at the time of the Supreme Court's decision 9 years ago will enter segregated high schools this fall, having suffered a loss which can never be restored. The lack of an adequate education denies the Negro a chance to get a decent job.
The orderly implementation of the Supreme Court decision, therefore, cannot be left solely to those who may not have the economic resources to carry the legal action or who may be subject to harassment.
Other features will be also requested, including greater protection for the right to vote. But legislation, I repeat, cannot solve this problem alone. It must be solved in the homes of every American in every community across our country.
In this respect, I want to pay tribute to those citizens North and South who have been working in their communities to make life better for all. They are acting not out of a sense of legal duty but out of a sense of human decency.
Like our soldiers and sailors in all parts of the world they are meeting freedom's challenge on the firing line, and I salute them for their honor and their courage.
My fellow Americans, this is a problem which faces us all—in every city of the North as well as the South. Today there are Negroes unemployed, two or three times as many compared to whites, inadequate in education, moving into the large cities, unable to find work, young people particularly out of work without hope, denied equal rights, denied the opportunity to eat at a restaurant or lunch counter or go to a movie theater, denied the right to a decent education, denied almost today the right to attend a State university even though qualified. It seems to me that these are matters which concern us all, not merely Presidents or Congressmen or Governors, but every citizen of the United States.
This is one country. It has become one country because all of us and all the people who came here had an equal chance to develop their talents.
We cannot say to 10 percent of the population that you can't have that right; that your children can't have the chance to develop whatever talents they have; that the only way that they are going to get their rights is to go into the streets and demonstrate. I think we owe them and we owe ourselves a better country than that.
Therefore, I am asking for your help in making it easier for us to move ahead and to provide the kind of equality of treatment which we would want ourselves; to give a chance for every child to be educated to the limit of his talents.
As I have said before, not every child has an equal talent or an equal ability or an equal motivation, but they should have the equal right to develop their talent and their ability and their motivation, to make something of themselves.
We have a right to expect that the Negro community will be responsible, will uphold the law, but they have a right to expect that the law will be fair, that the Constitution will be color blind, as Justice Harlan said at the turn of the century.
This is what we are talking about and this is a matter which concerns this country and what it stands for, and in meeting it I ask the support of all our citizens.

French actor Georges Charlia (1894 – 1984) played in 22 silent and sound films. He worked with such famous directors of the French avant-garde cinema as Germaine Dulac, Jean Epstein and Alberto Cavalcanti.
Georges Charlia was born as Georges Charliat in Paris, France in 1894. He made his film debut in Germaine Dulac’s silent film Gossette (1923) with Régine Bouet. Then followed a part in another classic of the silent cinema, La belle Nivernaise/The Beauty from Nivernais (1924, Jean Epstein) with Blanche Montel. He played the lead in Epstein’s La goutte de sang/The drop of blood (1924). The film was started by Jean Epstein, but Maurice Mariaud took it over and modified the project. In the Guy de Maupassant adaptation Pierre et Jean/Pierre and Jean (1924, Donatien), he appeared with Lucienne Legrand. Le train sans yeux/Train Without Eyes (1927, Alberto Cavalcanti) was a Louis Delluc adaptation in which he co-starred with Hans Mierendorf, Gina Manès and Hanni Weisse. He also appeared in Cavalcanti’s drama En rade/Sea Fever (1928, Alberto Cavalcanti). At Rovi, Hal Erickson reviews: “Catherine Hessling, better known to film enthusiasts for her work in the early Jean Renoir silents, stars as a seaport barmaid who falls in love with sweet-natured sailor Georges Charlia. When Charlia unaccountably disappears one day, Hessling is plunged into the depths of melancholia. Her sad story is counterpointed with the bizarre behavior of the local laundress' lazy, near-moronic son (Philippe Heriat), who dreams of a life at sea. Although well photographed on genuine locations, Sea Fever proved confusing to many non-French filmgoers.” Charlia starred in a few German films, including Ritter der nacht/Knights of the Night (1928, Max Reichmann) co-starring La Jana. In that same year he also played in the drama L'équipage/Last Flight (1928, Maurice Tourneur) starring Charles Vanel. One of his last silent films was Prix de beauté/Beauty Prize (1930, Augusto Genina) in which he was the lover and murderer of Louise Brooks.
George Charlia made the transition to sound film with Vacances (1931, Robert Boudrioz) with Florelle and Lucien Gallas. He reunited with Gina Manès to co-star in L'ensorcellement de Séville/The Charm of Seville (1931, Benito Perojo), Pax (1932, Francisco Elías) and L'amour qu'il faut aux femmes/The love which is necessary to women (1933, Adolf Trotz). In Germany, Charlia played a supporting part in the classic anti-war drama Kameradschaft/Comradeship (1931, Georg Wilhelm Pabst). Hal Erickson at Rovi: “Kameradschaft is set in a mining community on the French/German frontier, where several French miners are trapped in a cave-in. Their only hope for rescue lies in a long-abandoned underground tunnel, buried since the First World War. Ignoring the ethnic and political differences that have long separated the two countries, a group of German miners pick their way through the old tunnel to save the entombed Frenchmen. (…) Ironically, the German public, whose decency and humanity is celebrated in Kameradschaft, tended to avoid the film.” His last films were the Belgian-Dutch coproduction Jeunes filles en liberté/Young Girls in Freedom (1933, Fritz Kramp), and L'enfant de ma soeur/The Child of my Sister (1933, Henry Wulschleger). Why his film career stopped then after only ten years is not clear. Wasn’t his voice sound proof? Did he loose his interest for the cinema after the silent avant-garde cinema had dwindled away? We only know that Georges Charlia died in 1984, in his hometown Paris.

My adolescence was moderately reclusive and relatively anti-social, and I remember many a solitary Saturday afternoon that I spent listening to (and watching) the Baseball Game-of-the-Week. I guess it was Joe Garagiola that was Dizzy' s partner on those broadcasts. I should've remembered that Dizzy was Arkansas born and bred.
I guess I could have written Dizzy a fan letter, but I never thought of it. I probably would have imagined it uncool to say that I enjoyed listening to him. Now, of course, I think fondly of those afternoons. He was an archetypal goodoleboy, I'd imagine, but he had, I think, a homespun decency and certainly a surfeit of good humor.
So this is my way of saying thanks, Dizzy, for all those blissful Saturdays, even if I had to watch way too many Yankees games when it was the Indians I really cared about.

Awwwww, Joe Wilson is sorry he disrupted a major Presidential address to a joint Congressional session. At least he was last night (Wednesday). Today, after news media reported that his apology was on demand of GOP leadership after a call from the White House, he didn't sound all that sorry any more. By nightfall, he was playing his 15 minutes for all they're worth. There's even a T-shirt about him.
Wilson is a back-bencher from a strange little district where a majority voted to keep the Confederate battle flag. Some of his supporters are members of an organization that favors secession and a new Civil War. He's taken a lot of corporate money. He's counting on his constituents' willful ignorance of the proposed legislation. He has to be, or they would know that, in fact, WILSON is lying, and continues to lie, about free medical care for aliens who are here unlawfully.
But what truly amazes me is the Orwellian disregard for even recent history on the part of this gang of Congressional thugs which dares to usurp the once-proud name of the Grand Old Party.
Imagine, if you will, that McCain had won, and the Democrats were the minority, and members of the Progressive Caucus had mouthed off at a speech. At a minimum, they'd have been censured, and probably recalled in fairly short order. They'd have been tried and convicted of sedition in the news media, with talk hosts demanding their immediate arrest and rendition to one of those secret CIA bases where no one notices torture. The real fringe would be calling in death threats, and demanding public execution for terrorism, preferably by hanging on the Capitol steps.
As with the unfortunate Dixie Chicks, the solemn invocation of 9/11 and the wartime Doctrine of Presidential Infallibility would continue for years. Their lives would undoubtedly be ruined for a long time.
But now the Rapture Republicans are in the minority. And lookie here, it's almost 9/11 again. But, surprise, surprise (not). Now it's their patriotic duty to prevent the president from governing at all, by hook, crook, political sabotage, social vandalism, or any other semi-lawful means necessary.
Remarkable. Also pretty fucking hypocritical.

Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. On 3 April 1989 New Zealanders were glued to their televisions as they watched broadcaster Paul Holmes goad America Cup skipper Dennis Connor into walking off his show.
Connor marched stiffly out of the studio, grabbing his briefcase as he went, while Holmes opined to his audience that he thought some kind of apology was called for – from Connor. The controversial launch of the Holmes Show, with Connor in the hot seat, has gone down in legend and is well remembered decades after the event. Connor, having lost ungraciously to New Zealand in an America Cup challenge had described yacht designer Bruce Farr as a loser, said that he was “sailing against a dog” and said the New Zealand team was full of S***.
Paul Holmes, assuming the role of defender of New Zealand’s honour, took the opportunity to call Connor to account publicly and it made him a household name overnight – with some loving him and some loathing him for ever after. People discussed the show on the streets and in their workplaces the next day and many took it upon themselves to formally complain to Television New Zealand about their aggressive new broadcaster who, they described among other things as “rude and extremely tasteless” and insulting “to the integrity of all New Zealanders” .
Television New Zealand scrambled to defend Paul Holmes, with the News and Current Affairs team recommending that the complaints should not be upheld and arguing that it needed to “be recognised that Holmes represents a programme style which may be regarded by some as rather different to traditional current affairs programming.”
This image shows one several complaints reports stating that while Holmes’s interview with Dennis Connor had “created something of a sensation and furore” there had been “no breach of taste and decency”, and recommending the complaint should not be upheld.

As for Dennis Conner, he never forgave Paul Homes for the interview. As Holmes lay dying, Connor was asked if he would like to send him a message and he declined, saying only that he was surprised that Holmes had ended up being knighted for his services to broadcasting.

Sarah Palin, while removing the crosshairs map from her web site after Gabrielle Giffords was critically injured by an assassin who killed several other peoplet, including a nine-year-old girl and a U.S. federal judge, did not have the decency to apologize for displaying it and its terroristic innuendo in the first place.

1975. Bell-bottoms, disco, seaweed wallpaper in shades of brown, hair, a lot of hair, afros on every- body and voluptuous sideburns, roller-skates, Led Zeppelin. Coffee and oil is very expensive. The first disposable razor. Ali beats Frazier in the “Thrilla in Manilla”, The King is alive and kicking in Vegas and the king of Sweden is yet to be married. Gerald Ford is president in the USA, Brezhnev in the USSR. It’s the year when General Franco dies and Angelina Jolie and Tiger Woods are born.
Despite an oil crisis and prolonged recession, 1975 was a carefree time with more solutions than problems. A dualistic era where the colourful visions from the 60’s still lived but popular culture interpreted those visions in darker Kodachromatic tones. It was decency and decadence. It was the birth of the peace- and environmentalist movements, amidst a full-blown cold war.
Also, in 1975 a new paper is born – G-Print.

WELSH JUMPING.
In the autumn of 1829, Mr. Evans wrote in his diary extensive notes of a conversation which he had with several ministers in Bristol, on “the manner of religious rejoicing so remarkable among the Welsh.” His friends condemned it in a sweeping sentence, under the name of “Welsh jumping.” Mr. Evans attempted its vindication. We insert his own account:
“I observed that I could find no account of it among the Welsh until the time of Harris and Rowlands, Calvinistic Methodists, who flourished in Wales about the same time as Whitefield and Wesley in England. The preaching of these men was the means of producing a religious revival throughout all the principality, which had p. 43sunk into a state of deep lethargy, since the time of the great awakening under Vavasor Powell, about one hundred years before. At this period nothing was to be seen in almost every parish but young men and young women flocking together into the churches and church-yards, and engaging in different gambols and pastimes, such as ball-playing, foot-ball, leaping, fighting, and such like frolics, as if Wales had been changed into an Olympic mountain, and old paganism restored again. It is true, there were some preachers and churches, both Congregationalists and Baptists, then existing in the principality; but their talents, their spirits, or their magnanimity could not storm such a fortress of impiety. And, besides, there was a dreadful prejudice still remaining in the country against all sects, since the days of Charles II.; and they suffered persecution even unto blood, for about one hundred years previous to the appearing of these men. But from the ashes of those sufferers the revival by Harris and Rowlands sprung up, as did Luther from the ashes of Huss and Jerome of Prague.
“Mr. Rowlands and Mr. Harris were both of the communion of the Episcopal church, and, as such, there was not so much enmity against them at first; but after they had come out, and when the people understood that they were preachers of the cross of Christ, considerable persecution arose against them from the multitude; but it was now too late—for the gates of the city were opened—the leaven was put in the meal—the fire had been kindled—the sword was drawn from the scabbard, and many had been wounded, (spiritually,) and were ready to open the door for the gospel in spite of every danger. Harris, Rowlands, and the two Williams’s, had been clothed with power from on high, and the hammer of their ministry was sufficiently heavy to break in pieces the northern iron. [43] Several laymen of powerful minds were also raised up about this time; such as Mr. David Morris, and others, who were valuable auxiliaries to carry on the work. By their ministry, this praising and jumping in religious enjoyment began in Wales, which has not wholly left it on certain occasions until this day.
“As an apology for them, granting at the same time the possibility of extremes even in a good cause in the present state; and that graceless persons may feel something from these excitements p. 44as of the powers of the world to come, in the miraculous gifts of the Holy Ghost in the apostolic age; observe,
“1. That it appears to me like the residue of the Spirit, and the powers of the world to come; which were necessary to open a way for the gospel through the darkness and obduracy of paganism in the days of the apostles.
“2. It is no argument of importance against it, that many graceless persons felt a considerable degree of influence at the time, as well as others; for so it was in the case of Saul, king of Israel, and some besides named in Scripture.
“3. There is no essential difference between religious enjoyment in Wales and that which is now experienced in America; and that which accompanied the preaching of Whitefield in England, and even in Scotland: and that which also followed the ministry of President Edwards, in America, when whole towns and neighborhoods echoed with the sound of persons praying and praising God, as if a bursting cloud-shower of the Spirit of grace and prayer had descended upon them. Persons under the ministry of Whitefield wept, cried for mercy, and even fainted by the power of this influence.
“4. And such gracious influences are necessary for the spread of the gospel in every country, and in every land: and therefore the Millennium is described in the Bible as a period remarkable for the outpouring of the Holy Ghost—‘that a nation shall be born at once,’ [44a]—and ‘the flowing of the nations shall be to the mountain of the Lord’s house.’ [44b] It is this influence that has driven, as it were, the gospel into every nook of the mountains of Wales, as well as into its cities, towns, and villages; while in England, with all the advantages of education, the gospel, in a manner, is hid in a corner; and it has not run through the country, and searched out, and taken possession of all the inland parts of that spiritual Africa, and that for the want of these gales of divine influence, and powers peculiar to the gospel: and it can never be spread through every part of England as it is in Wales without these gifts. Common preaching will not do to rouse sluggish districts from the heavy slumbers into which they are sunk. Indeed, formal prayers and lifeless sermons are like bulwarks raised against these things in p. 45England; and this evil genius has also entered the principality under the pretence of order. Five or six stanzas will be sung as dry as Gilboa, instead of one or two verses, like a new song, full of God, of Christ, and the Spirit of grace, until the heart is attuned for worship. The burying-grounds are kept in fine order in Glamorganshire, and green shrubs and herbs grow on the graves, but all this is of little value, for the inhabitants of them are all dead—so is every form of godliness where its power is not felt. Order without life is exceedingly worthless. You exhibit all the character of human nature, leaving every bud of the flower to open in the beams of the sun, except in divine worship. On other occasions you appear to have as much fire in your affections as the Welsh have. If you are noticed in a court of law, the most efficient advocate, such as Erskine, will give you the greatest satisfaction; but you are contented with a preacher, speaking so lifelessly and so low that you can hardly understand the third part of what he says; and you will call this decency in the sanctuary. To-morrow, I shall see you answering fully to the human character, in your own actions. When the speakers on the platform will be urging the claims of missions, you will then beat the boards, and manifest so much life and cheerfulness, that not one of you will be seen to take up a note-book, nor any other book, while the speaker shall be addressing you. A Welshman might suppose, by hearing your noise, that he had been silently conveyed to the midst of one of the meetings of the ‘Welsh jumpers,’ with this difference, that you would perceive many more tears shed, and hear more ‘calves of the lips’ [45] offered up, in the rejoicing meetings of Wales. But you will use your heels well on such occasions, and a little of your tongues. But even in Wales, in certain places—that is, places where the fervent gales are not enjoyed which fill persons with fear and terror and joy in approaching the altar of God—you may see, while hearing a sermon, one looking into his hymn-book, another into his note-book, and a third turning over the leaves of his Bible, as if he were going to study a sermon in the sanctuary, instead of attending to what is spoken by the preacher as the mouth of God. If there is joy and gladness pertaining to many, the light of God’s countenance in the sanctuary should develope it; until a fire is kindled, p. 46and he speak with his tongue, making melody unto the Lord in his heart, and praising Him with his lips.
“5. It is in vain to urge objections against these powerful gales of divine influence, and allege that it is under the ministry of the illiterate preachers of Wales only they are experienced. Harris, Rowlands, and the two Williamses were not so, for they had been brought up for the established church. Whitefield and Edwards were men of education, and they preached the doctrine which in England is considered evangelical.
“6. It is also beside the point to affirm that only persons of no weight, that is, ignorant boys and girls, are in the habit of thus rejoicing and praising God in His temple; for it is certain, that those who express their joy in this manner possess so much sound experimental knowledge, as to make them eminent in that respect. I have listened to many of them in the midst of their enjoyment, and have often been delighted while they repeated true, evangelical, and substantial stanzas, replete with profound sentiment: for in such seasons, they could find out the very best, which made impressions on their memories; and these rapturous feelings developed them, as if the tongue were moved by the heat and force of the fire within. And many other things of an evangelical and gracious character they will utter on these joyful occasions, with such heavenly eloquence as would be inimitable, and impracticable even for themselves to utter with the same effect, without enjoying these meltings of spirit. This enjoyment is accompanied by many tears and much tenderness of heart: nor are persons of a dry spirit and hard heart ever regarded as fit subjects for this work of praise, in these blessed seasons of Christian enjoyment. It does not accord with any, but with him whose heart melts like wax, and runs in the form and mould of the gospel.
“7. There is no way in which churches or particular persons may enjoy this heavenly ecstasy, but by walking with God, and by cultivating a spirit of watchfulness and prayer, which shows its pure and holy character. It awakens watchfulness against all evil tempers, improper expressions, and wicked actions, lest the sense of it should be lost. Such a frame of mind cannot be expected by living in sin. These individuals come to the house of God with an earnest desire for this enjoyment, and dreading lest there should be a something in them which would cause God to deny them p. 47this unspeakable privilege. It is an exceedingly easy matter for a minister to manage a congregation while Christian enjoyment keeps them near to God. They are diligent and zealous, and ready for every good work. But it is very easy to offend this joyous spirit—or give it what name you please, enthusiasm, religious madness, or Welsh jumping, (its English name,)—and make it hide itself. A quarrel and disagreement in the church will occasion it to withdraw immediately. Indulging in sin, in word or deed, will soon put it to flight. It is like unto the angel formerly, who could not behold the sin of Israel without hiding himself; so is the angel of the religious life of Wales, which proves him to be a holy angel, though he has the name of a ‘Welsh jumper.’ My prayer is, that this angel be a guard upon every congregation, and that none should do any thing to offend him. It is an exceedingly powerful assistant to accompany us through the wilderness. But the individual that has not felt its happy influences, has nothing to lose; hence he does not dread a dry meeting and a hard prayer, for they are all the same to him; but the people of this enjoyment pray before prayer, and before hearing, that they may meet with God in them.
“8. The seasons when these blessings are vouchsafed to the churches of Wales, are to be noticed. It is generally at a time when the cause of religion is at a low ebb—all gone to slumber. This happy spirit of enjoyment, like the angel of the pillar of fire, appears when there is distress, and every thing at the worst. Its approach to the congregation is like the glory of God returning to the temple of old; it creates a stir among the brethren,—they have a new prayer, and a new spirit given them to worship God. This will lay hold of another,—some new strength and light will appear in the pulpit, until it will be imagined that the preacher’s voice is altered, and that his spirit is become more evangelical, and that he preaches with a more excellent savor than usual. Tenderness will descend upon the members, and it will be seen that Mr. Wet-eyes and Mr. Amen have taken their place among them. The heavenly gale will reach some of the old backsliders, and they are brought with weeping to seek their forfeited privilege. By this time the sound of Almighty God will be heard in the outer court, beginning to move the hearers like a mighty wind shaking the forest. In these seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Lord some churches p. 48will receive, in the course of a year, additions of one hundred, others a hundred and fifty, and some others upwards of two hundred new members. Sometimes, the gale seems as if it blew upon the outer court—upon the hearers, and the young people from ten to fifteen years of age—when nothing extraordinary appears in the light and effect of the ministry, nor in the church; but afterwards making its way through the outer court to rouse the inner court, until a great concern is awakened for the state of the soul. But observe: The revival that begins in the church, and proceeds from thence to the world, and not that which commences outside of the church, is more frequent, and more efficient in its converts, for the pangs of labor are to begin in Zion.
“9. Again, it may be remarked that the happy effects which follow these powerful revivals, evince their nature. They are certain, where they are strong, to bend the oaks of Bashan—men of strong and sturdy minds, and haughty hearts—to attend the ministry of the word. They will bring all the ships of Tarshish, the merchants of this world, into the harbor of hearing. The power of the day of the Lord will raze all the walls of bigotry to the foundations. The thoughts of eternal realities, and the spirit of worship, are by these blessings diffused abroad, and family worship is established in scores of families, where a few months before no regard was had unto it. The door of such a district, thus opened by the powers of the world to come, shall not be closed against the hearers of the gospel, until a goodly number of souls are there converted unto God. Where the living waters flow, dead fish are made alive by its virtues.
“10. Since the first appearing of these gracious gifts at Llangeitho, under the ministry of Mr. Rowlands, they have been showers of blessings, which are poured down on the congregations of the Baptists and Congregationalists as well as the Calvinistic Methodists; and sometimes one of these denominations is favored with them, whilst the others are destitute. These refreshing seasons were, at times, experienced in a very powerful manner at Llangeitho, for about fifty years; that is, all the period of Mr. Rowlands’ ministrations in that church. About two thousand persons assembled there for communion once a month, from the several counties of Wales, even in winter, and about three thousand in the summer season; which rendered it the most extraordinary place in p. 49Europe, and beyond a doubt, hundreds of those who assembled there, on such occasions, are now in heaven singing the new song. If to live on the merits of Christ, to fear God, and praise him, and lead a sober and righteous life, is an evidence of a godly state, then this was visible at that time at Llangeitho.”
I have gotten used to EVERYTHING coming to my hummingbird feeders, woodpeckers, orioles, tanagers (and even hummingbirds), but come on! I live in New Jersey for goodness sakes! This Peach-faced Lovebird apparently escaped and decided to try his luck at my feeders. He would sit on the perch and lick the sugar water as it ran out all over my patio. He doesn't even have the decency to look guilty.

This ad hoc acoustic supergroup started around a table at a small pub in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Ry Cavanaugh, Billy Conway, Sean Staples, Dinty Child, Jim Fitting and other friends gathered to swap songs and stories. Their lively performances and inspired versions of tunes from the dusty backroads of America's past were such a hit with fans that they decided to take their musical conversation into the studio. The two-CD debut Tabletop People ups the ante with stellar appearances by folksinger Rose Polenzani, Twinemen's Laurie Sargent, Dennis Brennan, Asa Brebner, Merrie Amsterburg, Dan Kellar, Presidents of the United States' Chris Ballew, Jabe Beyer, Tim Gearon and other luminaries. And the 18 gritty, funny, soulful performances included span a gamut of emotions and tastes that should please both adult and younger listeners.

Session Americana sit tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table. What keeps you coming back show after show is the same thing that any audience member longs for, great songs performed by a great band. The six core members of the band have brought enviable careers worth of experience to the “table”, featuring (current and former) members of Treat Her Right, Patty Griffin, Lori McKenna, The The, Dennis Brennan, Kris Delmhorst. The group has grown from a rag tag jam at a local pub to a regional institution, playing gigs from church coee houses to urban nightclubs to regional festival tents to large halls.

2008 was the year of the spoonbills. Not only was it a rare event for them to be nesting there, but they had the decency to choose a tree right in front of the hide.

Notice the top right side- burkas for sale in one of the most modern malls in Chennai..... and by the way.... If you wanna be seen with your boyfriend or girlfriend holding hands, come to this mall. It seems if you're anybody- you have a boy friend or girl friend to hold hands with. And, best to come to this mall in tank tops and skirts above the knee. It felt as if you're not allowed to roam around inside this mall with any decency if you're wearing salvaar kamiz- especially not sari- especially if under a particular age. I am so glad I experienced Chennai 10 years ago and not today. I may have felt more comfy in being able to dress in my American ways- but I would not have experienced the culture the way I did then- now....

Quite odd, I thought, to find a Royal Palace in a Botanic Garden. Granted, København's princess-perfect Rosenborg Slot sits nicely in Kongens Have, the King's Garden. But their Botanisk Have, the Botanic Garden, is across a busy four-lane road.
Kew Palace's history is arcane and convoluted. Perhaps it's a bit royal, perhaps a bit commoner, perhaps just not that interesting. By all means make your own enquiries. I didn't get any closer than this out of disinterest. Nothing much has changed; except now I'm even further away.
What royal connections there are relate to the Hanoverians, that family invited in to rule, but without the decency in the first two generations to bother to learn the language! That's not to discount their importance to the Botanic Garden. It was George II, who declared himself proudly a Briton, and his mother, who were the movers and shakers in getting this garden established. Move on a generation and the wastrel George IV wanted to knock the place down. But for his preference for a girl and a bottle…he might have got it done.
