I took this shot of a coyote out my car window, as we were driving through Death Valley. Even though it was February, it was hot, and this poor coyote sure looked like he could use a cool refreshing beer.

After photographing the first GHO I shifted my focus to the second one to the right of me. He stayed here for several minutes before taking off to higher grounds with the third one that was hidden. Click image for the larger view.

This is a shot I took a while back. I have planned to go back down the Westernport bay to get some shots of the mangroves but haven't had a chance or timing the high tide. the day I took this shot It was a little windy.. not the best conditions when trying to photograph a tree, but I do really like the spikes under the mangrove. looks very lethal.

Death Valley Abstract - I love all the layers and colours in the sandstone you find in Death Valley National Park. I made this photo in Twenty Mule Team Canyon a few weeks ago.

This was a nice, cold morning!

After this extraordinary life, all I crave for is an ordinary death. I want to leave when the world is fast asleep.

Capital punishment, the death penalty, or execution is the killing of a person by judicial process as a punishment for an offense. Crimes that can result in a death penalty are known as capital crimes or capital offences. The term capital originates from Latin capitalis, literally "regarding the head" (Latin caput). Hence, a capital crime was originally one punished by the severing of the head.

Capital punishment has in the past been practiced in virtually every society, although currently only 58 nations actively practice it, with 95 countries abolishing it (the remainder having not used it for 10 years or allowing it only in exceptional circumstances such as wartime). It is a matter of active controversy in various countries and states, and positions can vary within a single political ideology or cultural region .

are you trying to say you want to kill me?

Would still qualify for a number of previous challenges!!

The sun direction and elevation are a little different every time I go through here. We'll probably revisit this in our December workshop.

Over my kids spring break, we took a road trip down to Death Valley. It was an awesome trip and great memories were made.

Frog playing death, after being discovered by one of our cats. He survived using this tactic ;-))

"Apparent death, colloquially known as playing dead, feigning death, or playing possum, is a behavior in which animals take on the appearance of being dead. This form of animal deception is an adaptive behavior also known as tonic immobility or thanatosis. Apparent death can be used as a defense mechanism or as a form of aggressive mimicry, and occurs in a wide range of animals."- Wiki

Desolation Canyon, Death Valley, California

A view of Death Valley from the mouth of Desolation Canyon. I believe the vegetation we see on the valley floor is mesquite trees, watered by the spring that supplies Furnace Creek with water. Beyond are the Panamint Mountains.

Kiss of Death - This burrowing owl caught a small rodent (some type of mouse I believe) right in front me. If you look closely, you can see the forensic evidence on the owl's beak and mouse's mouth. Conditions were very dark, so I could barely see what was happening, but was lucky one of the frames turned out sharp. In dark conditions such as this, I make sure I'm shooting electronic shutter at the highest frame-rate, hold steady, and just "spray and pray", hoping that one of the images comes out acceptable. Was grateful to successfully capture my first image of this species with prey on Thanksgiving day. Happy Thanksgiving!

Dante's View. Death Valley National Park, California, USA

Just finished two back to back workshops in Death Valley. Hard to believe this was just two days ago. I think I'll have a few keepers from our time there.

I want to share with you the most amazing Kathmandu experience of all.

Life and death.

Here they mingle in a seamless and perfectly natural way.

A busy temple full of merchants, colour, crying babies, right next to public funerals and open air cremations just out there in the street.

Death - the most natural of all things. Why hide it?

The perpetual circle of life - accepted and understood.

PS I hope no-one feels offended by this.. I am just trying to show a way of life that's different to ours.. It touched and inspired me deeply!

In the springtime, if the conditions are optimal, the Death Valley blooms as the desert comes alive with fields of flowers. That year we tried our luck out at the Ibex Sand Dunes. We ventured out on the washboard road to the backcountry Ibex Sand Dunes. It was a good sign to see yellow coreopsis flowers along the road. On our hike out to the dunes we found quite a good display of the fragrant sand verbena wildflowers as well. The southern end of Death Valley was fragrant with scent of the sand verbena flowers. As I was climbing the dunes the sunset started. I was trying to find a shot the flower and the dunes. And then I found these sand verbena beauties.

Death Valley as seen from Dante's View. The white area near the center is the salt flats area of Badwater Basin, the hottest and lowest point in North America at 282 ft. (86 m) below sea level. The mountains on the opposite side of the valley are the Panamint Range, whose highest point, Telescope Peak, is 11049 ft. (3368 m) above sea level. The total relief from top to bottom, over 11300 ft., is one of the greatest of any mountain range in North America.
