Description: Page from Valentin Haüy's Essai Sur L'Education des Aveugles, printed in Paris, 1786. This page is taken from the first book made specifically for the blind. It is the work of Valentin Haüy, who founded the world's first school for the blind in Paris in 1784, the National Institute for the Young Blind. Haüy's students were taught reading, writing, arithmetic, music, and useful trades. The students themselves produced the book. The pages were indented from the back on a copperplate press using specially made right-reading type (the reverse of ordinary printing type). The letter face that Haüy chose was a round hand similar to the letters the students were learning to write.
