139 / 365 - all that jazz

(on black)

Until last year, that is for about 25 years, I have been a straight-up rock man. I could play and sing quite a few rock songs, composed some and recorder some. I could listen to jazz and even comprehend it a little but I would chose Beatles over Miles Davis any day. Not any more. Starting this year I have been learning jazz improv theory. Well, "learning" is an overstatement, but I know the basics now. Classical training that I've had helps enormously but thinking with your hands is something I've got tl learn from scratch. I guess it all has to do with aging and mid-life crisis - two notions that I like to bounce around lately. I've lost a lot of abilitis I once had, and I gathered very few that I didn't have. Piano is certainly on of the former and photography is undoubtedly one the latter ones, if not THE one.

So here's a quick selfie for you. One light, one wall and one car sun shade (I was too lazy tu unpack my new reflector). Talk about simple. The exact setup is in the setup shot.

Oh, and one more thing. The piece I'm holding is quite difficult. When I play it well enough I promise I"ll make it a part of my 365 - as a video.

Now tell me - do you play? Wanna jam?

My insect buddies are finally coming out to play, albeit only for a short time each day!

After hunting for about an hour this morning, I finally found this little guy hiding inside a spirea bush!

I managed to get off a few decent shots before he hid himself deeper in the bush...

Black Saturday +day139

Winter

Doing usual stuff today. Cutting firewood, clearing, burning and some other odd jobs like laying some stones for the paths.

Wood

Doing stuff is always complicated by the fact you need to do 2 or three things before you can really start the job. Take for instance cutting wood. I suppose I could use an axe or bow saw but I will be there all day and do only half the work I could. So chain saw it is. Before you start I need to tighten the chain, sharpen the chain, fill the engine oil and petrol. The saw is two-stroke so it needs oil. Cutting up small wood today. Kindling is hard to find and it's all wet. Have to measure the beggars so they fit in the fire. Cut up a few larger logs to dry inside. Pretty heavy.

Shed

The sheds been delivered. The slab has been poured since I last came up. Pretty good job. Talking to the concreters one of them lived about 20Km N from KLW. Seems his place was 3Km from the fire when it came through. They are pretty busy doing slabs. Now to find the instructions and errect the thing. This is the third sheed I've helped build and this one looks by far the most complicated. Where is the wood?

Fire

Got a fire going to clear up the loose wood. Took a bit of time to light. Had a race with my brother to start the thing. Matches are not what they used to be. Because it's cold and wet all the wood needs to be dried before it lights well. This requires a bit of accelerator. I use Kero not Petrol because of the chance of flash burns (cold air pushes the fuel vapours low). Eventually got it going.

Had some late lunch at 1500. Did a bit more work and went home a lot more tired, cold, wet and smelling of smoke.

a year of living positively, day 139

I went to the gym this morning with stacey. wasn't too bad, and I need to keep going, so I guess I will. :) also, today is day 2 without fast food. It's harder than it might seem. I really want some McNuggets right now, but I need to start eating right.

At least we have beautiful weather. and apparently, one of the twins (my nieces) ate a bug in their pool today, and then said yum. just thought I'd share, as it's hilarious. ;)

Day 139

The camping trip that she just had with her Sparks unit, was planned with a Hawaiian theme. They had a blast! They did tons of Hawaiian crafts, wore leis, ate Hawaiian-type food, and had a really great time!

Aloha!

She looks really different to me here. Probably because she is wired from not sleeping all weekend, probably hasn't brushed her hair in 3 days, and hasn't had a bath in 3 days :) This is the most smile she would give me.

I'm fostering two kitties while their mama is travelling on business. Kittysitting, I guess. Her two are similar to my two in that one doesn't give a damn about anything and the other wants things just her way and her way only.

Keiko was hiding under the couch last night and I wanted to get her into my bedroom where I could close the doors and give her a sense of safety. She wasn't thrilled with the idea of coming out from under the couch. The scratch bled a good bit (this is after I cleaned it up a few times) and she caught me in the fold of my first finger as well. That smarts a bit today but it will heal quickly. That's what they do--it's their defense. I finally got her to sit on a kitty pad (backed up against a wall, poor thing) and was able to scoop her up with the pad. Once in my room, she went under the bed and wouldn't come out. I slept on the couch with my two babies.

She was more social this morning, even came over for a little bit of scratching while I was getting dressed. I'm hoping tonight she'll let me snap a photo of her.

while little odin is technically 139 days old, in age-adjusted terms, he's barely just a month old, since, from a developmental perspective, his body doesn't really care that he arrived 15 weeks early.

that means that little odin's sleep schedule is much more like a newborn than it is like a 5 month old and we have to be very careful that we don't try to get him into a regular sleep schedule before his body is ready.

books like "healthy sleep habits, happy child" have really helped us get a handle on what to expect. most importantly, he still has no circadian rhythms or internal biological clocks yet, so there's absolutely no hope of getting him on any sort of sleep schedule. babies who are his age also become overtired after only an hour or two of wakefulness . overtiredness can lead to fussiness, so we're constantly attuned to how long he's been awake and reading his cues as to avoid the overtired downward spiral.

babies less than 6 weeks old also tend to fall asleep very late and don't sleep for very long during the day or night. so despite the fact that he's 139 days old, we're still all sleeping like there's a newborn in the house.

luckily, six weeks or so ( again, in age-adjusted terms ) seems to be the magic date after which 80 percent of babies become more settled at night and sleep for longer periods.

Day 139

Our daughter is camping this weekend so it was an awesome, peaceful weekend just for the two of us.

I got to go through my recipes (something I never have time to do) and plan some meals, while Mark got lots of yardwork done, we both got some cleaning done, and we got to spend lots of time together.

We also got to make a dinner that we would not make with Jaymi around (mussels, Caesar salad & a potato casserole), which are about to eat (at 8pm), and after dinner we plan to sit around our bonfire with a glass of wine, and talk.

It has been nice.

For my 365 project, and FGR their theme group for today - Peace is Not Just a Word.

Early morning quiet here. I love the window views out over the roofs to the trees surrounding this place.

So my best friend gave me some of this, what she calls 'Black Eyes Peas'... Apparently she was violent with some green peas and punched them all in the face and proceeded to cook them! They were delicious!

Day 139 of 365

Nothing special today, just lil' ole me. I had meant to get out and take some of my Take A Class With Dave and Dave shots (maybe even all of em), but instead laid on the sofa and enjoyed the peace and quiet.

Kathy slept in and then went to work and my neighbor took Savanah for a play date. I am so glad that Savanah has charmed all of my neighbors and that we all get along so well. Basically, today, she was an impromptu baby sitter which allowed for me to goof off and get nothing done (god bless her for that LOL).

Day 139:

What a contrast to last week. Last week was one of the hardest weeks. There was

one thing after another that went wrong and no matter what you tried to do, nothing

made it better. That’s work sometimes. Thankfully today’s work day went very smooth and only three more days until Friday and that means the office Christmas party and the start of the weekend.

That marble on top is giving me a crystal ball feeling. I've still got to look for another 12 circles before I'm done for this month, my chances are not looking good, I seem to be turning to my perfume bottles for inspiration lately. Fingers cross more circles will pop up when commanded.
