Star Wars Day! May the 4th

My entry in this weeks challenge set by inFocus (Andy Wells). Back to over to you Pikebubbles, ~Jules~ and ubiquitous-images :)

After my previous shot, I thought i'd crack on with a Black and White shot. This was originally 3 bracketed exposures merged in Photomatix and rendered in B&W. Also a 'little' cleanup in Photoshop to remove the keychain on Darth's head!

Background was some white card from Hobbycraft! :)

As I celebrate 25 years of photographing miniatures, toys & figurines, I have turned my attention back to one of the subject matters I spent most of my time studying and photographing during my Degree at the Glasgow School of Art: Toy soldiers.

.

For as long as I can remember toy soldiers have fascinated me, and when I discovered the incredible photographs captured by the artist David Levinthal I was blown away. This, in part, led to me documenting many of my childhood toys during my degree in the late 90’s.

.

Playing with toy soldiers was one of my favourite pastimes as a youngster. Children learn so much about life through the act of play, albeit whilst possessing a limited ability to comprehend the real life consequences mirrored within the story lines that are played out.

.

The theme of war is ever present in all of our lives. Whether we choose to acknowledge it or not (if we have that luxury) is another matter. It is a constant – an inevitability, like death and taxes.

.

In late 2023 I spent a grand total of ~£30 sourcing hundreds of the cheapest and most generic toy soldiers I could find. I literally bought armies of them.

.

During my degree, I became fascinated by the notion of what happens to a toy when it is entirely removed from its intended use and original context. Just like I did in the late 90’s, I have photographed the figurines individually with nothing but a blank backdrop for company, laying bear the imperfections of each character.

.

I could count on one hand the number of times I have used a ‘filter’ in any of my photography, but for this series it felt somehow necessary. Perhaps because it adds to the sense of drama, perhaps because it helps to mask the fact they are merely toys, I am not entirely sure. But something interesting happened to each image when it was added.

.

I have spent a lot of time carefully editing/refining the figurines that are depicted: perfecting their imperfections. I will upload one image per day from this new series throughout January.

Finally found a bit of time to try and nail my multi-coloured Orbs. A bit too bright perhaps, but progress.

Just back from what was an utterly magical Hneymoon with my beautiful wife, Mel. South Africa is such an amazing country.

We were lucky enough to spend 3 days on Safari at the Shamwari game reserve - they do some incredibly important work out there and it was a genuine pleasure to spend some time with all the staff and take in the breathtaking environment that they work in on a daily basis.

Conditions were a little flat tonight, but managed to time this photo so that I managed to capture some of the sea pouring back into the outdoor swimming pool as the tide was going crazy. Happy enough.

After what was a dreadful weekend of weather, it was very summer like today. Phew! So, headed down the beach with my Lee filters and watched the tide rising under the sunset. Nice!

Last night I hosted the final night photography / light painting workshop of the 2012 Guernsey Photography Festival. We were treated to ideal conditions, with low winds and a relatively clear sky. Thanks again to those who took part - you were all total naturals! I am sure you will soon be producing some beautiful light paintings of your own and I cannot wait to see what you come up with.

Thanks again,

David

Cheeky drip shot from a while back. Just trying to clear stuff from my laptop and finding loads of photos I never got round to uploading.

I am not usually a massive fan of adding much post-processing to my shots but my snaps today were all very blue. So, I decided to turn the blue down and ended up really liking how it looked after removing most of it.

1st ever attempt at creating an Orb. Some work to be done me thinks!!

Spent a couple of hours around at my good friend Kelvin's flat tonight discussing all things photography including a potentially amazing trip to France at some point with the cameras. He has a lovely little boy and I loved the corner of his living room that was jointly cluttered with prints and toys. What a fantastic combo!

Well, it was back to the beach today as it was such amazing weather. I went back to the same beach as yesterday to see if those crazy patterns in the sand were a one-off and there they were again. Crazy!

Gotta love nature sometimes.

I love it when things happen when taking a shot that you only realise after you see the end result: This aeroplane flew through my shot, and reflected perfectly in the Pool.
