As metropolitan cities continue to grow at incredible rates alongside each other across the globe, their boundaries start to blur. This has given rise to a new scale of geography known as "mega-regions". Here we have a look at those regions in Asia

It gave the world Sarah Palin, but let's not hold that against the state that is also known as The Last Frontier. After all, this week celebrates the 143rd anniversary of the day (March 30) that the US Senate approved the purchase of Alaska from the Russian empire for a mere $7.2 million - that's two cents per acre. Bargain.

How often do you use a sunbed...... rarely, often, or can you not go without it? If you're one of the people who can't go without using a sunbed, there may be a reason for it, as recent research has found that not only is tanning a danger to your health, it can also be addictive.

International Women's Day (IWD) is held annually on 8 March to celebrate women's achievements throughout the world. Largely aimed at inspiring women and celebrating their achievements, its roots are in movements campaigning for better pay and voting rights, and this year mark's the movement's 100th anniversary. But, it seems, despite the hard work, women still don't face equality in many areas, including pay.

This doesn’t mean that a nation’s appetite for cosmetic surgery equates to true beauty. Venezuela, for instance – second place in terms of how many Miss Universe titles it has won – features twentieth in terms of surgical procedures being carried out in a nation.
So does selling breast augmentations, facelifts and rhinoplasty really make the world more beautiful? Maybe not, when beauty is only skin deep, it seems to be working wonders for the world of beauty pageants, at least.

AMD’s main products include micoprocessors, motherboard chipsets, embedded processors and graphics processors for servers, workstations and personal computers. The company, which has long been dedicated to collaborating with customers and technology partners to ignite the next generation of computing and graphics solutions both at work, at home and at play, is now looking at 2010 as a key opportunity to build on the strategic changes the company has already made – and the way AMD is marketing itself has to play a part in that.

I'll stop soon, I promise. It really is fascinating me though (even though I know I'm just doing variations on the same thing). I think this is my best effort so far. Not sure how accurate it is, but I think it looks pretty...
This is the same elevation data (NASA SRMT data) and OS Open Data for the boundaries, roads, lakes and rivers.
Used a different piece of software for the hillshading this time (mainly because QGIS and SAGA kept kicking out one of the tiles - so did a search for something else). Found the 'Relief Visualisation Toolbox'. Does the same things that QGIS and SAGA do (presumably using the same tools) but it did what I wanted, so all is good.
The only photoshopping done was to boost the shadows a little and sharpen the output. Everything else is straight out of QGIS/QGIS2THREEJS.
Illegal drugs like marijuana, cocaine, crystal meth and heroin are a global problem - you don't need me to tell you that. Most of us have a general idea where they come from, the general supply routes, how they are sold and the effect they have on the lives of those who choose (or chose) to indulge. Drugs are big business. Billions of dollars worth of big business, which means competition between gangs vying to get a piece of the lucrative pie can spill over into violence, intimidation and ultimately, murder.

It is estimated that 4% of the world’s diamond trade is in blood diamonds, which have cost the lives of around 4 million people.
Meanwhile, global diamond sales continue to grow and have increased three-fold in the past 25 years. Each year in excess of US$72 billion worth are purchased.

It is the fifth day since the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, sending a cloud of volcanic ash over the European continent, grounding airlines and shutting down airports due to safety concerns. Now, in the face of losing US$200 million per day, the airlines are calling the decision to close air space "a European mess" and IATA, the body that represents the world's airlines, have criticised Europe's governments for their decision to handicap the airline industry.

Enhanced from V1.2 with rivers, lakes and roads.
Not that anybody has commented on the others (except Alan - many thanks Alan!), I think its OK to let it slip that its the Lake District (well, part of it). QGis2threejs doesn't seem to like it when I zoom out to the area as a whole. Oh well, I'll just have to learn another way of doing it... #alwayslearning
Have to remember that the data is fairly lo-res, so there may be some errors. The vector data (roads, lakes, rivers) is also from a very small scale map, so won't be perfect either (I see the road between Grasmere and Keswick is actually in Thirlmere... which come to think of it, isn't far from the truth!!!!).
Detail of illustrations from the Ohio State Buckeyes Football Graphic History poster. Poster features four beautiful renderings of influential figures in OSU football history.

Stars, diagram, etc.
Note that, in the Bayer designations, the alpha star in Orion is known as Alpha Orionis, while alpha in Cassiopeia is Alpha Cassiopeiae, and in Ursa Majoris as Alpha Ursae Majoris (for the grammatically inclined, these are the genitive forms of the names of the constellations).
There's an argument to be had over what comprises a constellation and what an asterism, but I don't care.
In June 2016, we extracted all the route data that had been captured in our digital outdoor leisure applications (OS Maps and its predecessors). We cleansed and analysed a decade’s worth of data to identify Great Britain’s most trodden paths. This is an A3 poster version of the dataviz.
Fair Trade was set up in the 1980s and has evolved from a niche phenomenon to a mainstream trading movement, and has seen good growth since its inception. According to the official Fair Trade website, consumers spent an estimated €3.4 billion on Fair Trade products in 2009 - a 15 percent increase over the previous year. In the UK, £800 million Fair Trade products were sold in 2009, (compared to £92 million in 2003), yet that only accounts for a small fraction of the £150 billion spent on groceries across the board.

In February 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued their ADDM autism report, which looked at a sample of eight year olds in 2000 and 2002. This report found that autism is increasing, with one in every 150 American children and almost one in 94 boys having the disability.

Near the end of the summer, I was asked by the publishers of Popular Science magazine to produce a visualization piece that explored the archive of their publication. PopSci has a history that spans almost 140 years, so I knew there would be plenty of material to draw from. Working with Mark Hansen, I ended up making a graphic that showed how different technical and cultural terms have come in and out of use in the magazine since it's inception.
