I said I would try to work Blender out.... Blender is hard! It is also probably too much for my ageing PC. Many thanks to:

wanderingcartographer.wordpress.com/

For his tutorial on hill shading in Blender - from which I managed to bring in the NASA DEM data and a lake shapefile. After much trial and error with the camera (hard) and a few other things I managed to produce this... whether it was worth it or not is debatable but as its raining I can't mow the lawns, so go to be doing something! For relatively low resolution data, at least it is a recognisable place.

I intend to (try) and build up my skill set on this and use this image as a basis for building something altogether more realistic. Luckily there are few photos of this scene around to work out some inspiration! Got to start somewhere.

A visualisation showing my Instagram network (user 'speedoflife'). The image shows all the users I either follow or am followed by, and the relationships between them. Different colours show different 'modules', or communities, in the network.

Notes: The data was taken from the Instagram API using Python, and loaded into the NetworkX package for analysing networks. It was then exported into the GraphML format, which allowed it to be loaded into the Gephi software and visualised. From Gephi it was exported to PDF, tidied up in Illustrator, and finally exported to PNG format.

The British National Party is a racist right-wing political party in the UK which has recently seen minor but noticeable gains in membership.

I was curious about how much of their support was actually related to non-white populations.

Overall the correlation is not that large.

Though I think it's interesting that there's significant BNP membership is areas *around* populations of non-white communities. Norfolk, West Wales etc.

Interesting too that BNP membership in London - an incredibly ethnically diverse city - is very low. Only Upminster on the London / Essex borders has significant BNP membership.

Any other observations on the data?

I spent the weekend printing a limited edition, silk-screened print for Random Number Multiples. This print, one of two to be included in the edition, is a stylized radial graph of word usage in the New York Times. My two prints will be included in an edition with two prints from Marius Watz.

Prints are editions of 50, and will be available exclusively through Random Number for $100 each. The online store launches the first week of February and there will be an exhibition showcasing both artists’ work on February 11 in Brooklyn. It will be a great opportunity to see the screen prints framed and in person if you’re in the NY area.

Pre-orders can be placed by contacting info@randomnumber.nu

It is estimated that food wasted by the US and Europe could feed the world three times over. Food waste contributes to excess consumption of freshwater and fossil fuels which, along with methane and CO2 emissions from decomposing food, impacts global climate change. Every tonne of food waste prevented has the potential to save 4.2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking one in four cars off the road.

For every religious and national festival, there is normally a food or drink that is synonymous with that day; Thanksgiving and turkey, Christmas and mince pies, Shrove Tuesday and pancakes, Easter and chocolate. However none of these foods seem to have the close relationship that Guinness has with St. Patrick's Day.
