When I returned to Michigan from NC, I plugged my external hard drive into my computer, and to my horror, it said the drive was corrupted and unreadable. It had been unplugged without using the "Safely Remove Hardware" button. All of my pictures are stored on this drive, over 10,000, as well as about 15,000 songs. I thought that the data was gone. I tried searching the internet, but could not seem to find any help, but I was pretty upset. I took it to work yesterday, and a friend who is computer savvy wanted to try, but he did not have any luck. I took the drive to the Geek Squad today, and they said they could get the data, but it would cost $600, but without any guarantees. Disgusted, I went back to work, and did another internet search. I found this freeware. It was even recommended by Microsoft. Not only did it retrieve almost all of my data, but it even restored things that I had deleted from the drive. I could not be more happy. I am posting this to help others who might experience the same problem. It will not work if the drive is damaged and is not operable. Send me an e-mail if you have any questions.

I'm not really sure why this is so dark, but it kinda makes me look evil and goes along with my scrunched up face, so I'm not complaining too much.
So.. I had pictures from the Music Rising auction which I'd transferred to the computer, but also left on the memory card... and I wanted to put them on the new computer today, and they were gone from both places - ACK!
It said something about the device not being stopped properly, but I ALWAYS do the "safely remove hardware" thing... so I really don't know.
I downloaded a recovery program... it found everything (at least as far as I can tell)... I have to finish off the job tomorrow... and I think a hi-speed card reader is in order as well.

this is a smaller and simpler problem - a hard disk in this 1.5 terabyte raid has actually failed. at least i can still use it, but i'd be much happier given time to procure and install a spare before working.
