First, a little while ago, my laptop would not start.. It was a hard drive problem, but at least the drive wasn't toast... it was some kind of a directory problem.. but alas I don't have the tools to fix the problem....
When I bought my Mac Book.. my plan was to quickly go out and buy a new drive for it.. because the drive that came with it.. was way too small for me.
Well.. I ended up dragging my feet a little bit.. and so installed some software and whatever else.. before finally replacing the drive.
I kept the old drive in one of these anti static bag things.. and that's the good news.. that when this drive problem hit I was able to swap drives..
Only problem is... the old drive has not a lot of space.. the software installed on it is obsolete or no longer authorized... and... the disk drive on the laptop doesn't work.. making software instillation a bit of a pain

this is an eight-disk raid6 with 6 terabytes of storage. the machine locked up and md reported six failed drives, but it was recoverable after a tedious and time-consuming rebuild & resync operation.

A mostly useless screen, but nonetheless interesting.
Hard drive problems! We went to watch Flapjack last night at 2:30AM and noticed the folder wasn't there. In fact, folders stopped after the letter S (And this folder started with T for The Marvelous Adventures Of Flapjack). In fact, a lot of the drive was seemingly missing. Adding to the confusion, I could do "dir t*" and see all the folders that started with T, but if I simply did "dir", it would stop at S. This is bad.
Opened case to hook to a different SATA port, my first line of defense that so often fixes SATA drive problems. Replaced my cable. Noticed my RAM wasn't fully seated. In fact, it's physically mangled to the point where I had to pull 2 of my 4G. That's okay -- I regret buying the extra 2G, and it cost me infinitely more time than it saved anyway.
Burned an ISO of SpinRite and ran SpinRite. It said it would take 43 hours. Ran downstairs, found the optical digital cable from our X-Box that recently died of a crashed drive (lost all savegames!), and hooked it from Carolyn's computer to my stereo. Since she has a backup of our complete music collection, we had music restored again! Enabled her 2nd monitor, played with the optical/HDMI settings on my stereo, and we had it so that we could watch videos on the big 52-inch TV and nice 7.1 stereo again. Though her computer only outputs in 4:3, so we would probably stick to fullscreen shows.
But then SpinRite petered out and said it couldn't finish, so I rebooted and am now moving files off. This will likely take a good week. I'm probably going to order another drive to copy recovered files to. And then RMA this drive to Western Digital. It's only 7 months into its 5yr warranty. They're going to lose money on me.

Stop the 2nd Removal of Native American Burials by Playa Vista!
My Brothers and Sisters,
I am sending this message to you with loving greetings that you and your families are well and strong. I am one of the several attorneys who filed an environmental lawsuit against Playa Vista and the City of Los Angeles in an attempt to prevent Phase II, the horror that led to the desecration of close to 400 ancestors in Phase I of the development.
Like so many predicted, ancestors have been found in the further development of the riparian corridor under Phase II. In the first week of November, a human burial was taken from the earth. Several femurs and bones have been unearthed including the cranium of a child. This morning another ancestor was unearthed.
The attorneys are preparing to seek relief from the court, however, the lawsuit is only one avenue. At this a very imminent and crucial time, we can only prevent further mass desecration and bring healing to the ancestors and the land by joining our efforts in a sacred hoop as a community. Please look into your heart and find where your strength can be at this time to organize together, to pray to speak out.
Together with our prayers, emergency calls are needed to Antonio Villaraigosa and Bill Rosendahl's offices to stop the sacrilege of Native American burials. Before becoming mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa was the only council member that voted against proceeding with Phase II because of the desecration at the burial site in Phase I.

Just to add insult to injury:
* Not only did my car get totaled this week
* Not only did my largest and newest harddrive (1500G) crash.
But now half my computer's RAM (2G out of 4G) is destroyed.
My computer was open while I was messing with the crashed harddrive. I then noticed my RAM looked like this. What happened?!?! It's as if the cooling apparatus failed, and the glue that held the board in the casing melted.
I tried to insert the ram back into the cooling apparatus, but it just wouldn't go.
Now for the RMA. Siiighhh.

What we see here is a not quite working laptop hard drive, and a toasted desktop drive...
This.. plus a little device that allows me to easily connect these drives to any old computer.. for the purposes of trouble shooting, data recovery, fixing, or whatever.
But alas.. no data was recovered... and so.. life for me is not what it once was..
