ComputerWorld's OSBC: Major enterprises have long used sophisticated data warehousing and data mining strategies, built on complex and expensive proprietary software and hardware, to gain competitive advantage. In the past decade, however, open source has increasingly lowered the bar to Big Data adoption. More and more, Big Data has become the key to owning new markets and growing business – and open source has fueled the Big Data trend, serving as the force of innovation in cloud, data and mobile technologies.
Atul leads the new UCSF Institute for Computational Health Sciences, effective April 1, 2015. In addition to his role at UCSF, Atul also has been named executive director of clinical informatics for UC Health Sciences and Services, which is developing and implementing a UC-wide data warehouse and analytic platform. Previously, Atul was Chief of the Division of Systems Medicine and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University. His research laboratory focuses on building and applying computational tools to convert hundreds of trillions of points of molecular, clinical and epidemiological data collected by researchers worldwide over the past decade, into new diagnostics, therapeutics and insights into both rare and common diseases.
Secretary Walker led a team from across state government, including Department of Technology and Information Chief Information Officer James Collins, to learn about the Allegheny County Department of Human Services’ Data Warehouse and how Delaware can use data to deliver more integrated and comprehensive services, especially to individuals and families who are at risk. Director Marc Cherna, who sought the data warehouse as a way to serve people more holistically, has been at the department for more than 21 years. “We’re part of the community,” Cherna said. “Government isn’t separate from the community.”
The Department’s Office of Data Analysis, Research and Evaluation, is run by Deputy Director Erin Dalton. During a discussion with the Delaware team, Cherna and Dalton said aggregating data for decision-making is one thing, but client-level data is another thing completely. Cherna said the Department has had integrated data to support worker decision-making for more than 15 years.
