Rewiring a house with plaster walls is not different from the house with other wall covering. Sometimes you have to make holes at the top of the walls or through the ceilings. This will depend on how good are you with wire pulling. Also, you will have to understand that upgrading of the electrical systems is an important task to your house or building. However, the rewiring process can result in the damage of the building. A little conversation with an electrician can provide you with steps for safe rewiring, with few holes punched through the floors, ceiling, walls, and the structural beam as well.
Steps for safe rewiring of a house with plaster walls
Carry out an electrical inventory. This involves the creation of a list of the devices that you will be using during the rewiring process. The electrical system should match your needs. You can also figure out how you will be using power to make it easier with the framing of the job parameters.
Check out the pull permits and the local codes. The codes will help you with the standards for everything. This will include how many outlets and inlet that you will have to put in every room and the type of wire you will be using for the rewiring process. If you fail to get permits, you will have to pull out the already finished job.
Decide on which type of rewiring you want to carry out. Is it electrical only? Or it also includes data, security, and fire wiring as well. For example, modern wiring does not only involve electricity. It also involves connection of wireless systems, which have increasingly become cheap.
Based on your list and electrical inventory, create a detailed working plan. The working plan should entail what you want to be done first and when will you complete it. You can also consult with an expert if you are not sure about time allocation.
Investigate the existing infrastructure because part of avoiding destruction is to ensure that nobody thumps holes in the existing wiring of plumbing. This type of awareness should always be the number one priority in the rewiring job.
You can always put things in writing but with a little flexibility because surprises of in-variability normally show up.
Find an expert who understands houses with plaster walls. This is because rewiring of a house with plaster walls is sometimes complicated and very demanding.
Demolition and reconstruction should be an integral part of the rewiring job. In that case, restoration and cleanup should be important as the rewiring itself.
During the rewiring process, you should aim for key areas, home runs, and appliances as well. This is the only way to ensure that the wire runs directly from the circuit breaker to the expected outlet without having other items on the same breaker. This will also reduce the load that can be exerted on the power system and at the same time creating a balanced system.
Finally, Integrate the plates and switches according to the appearance of the house.
