Black darters Mating

common darter dragonfly on my fingers taken at a bogland buncrana county donegal

Found on a small nature reserve on the Saint Asaph business park, I first saw them in 2019, they remain a rarity in North Wales with very few records but they are slowly moving northwards and westwards. Distinguished from the common darter by the waisted blood red abdomen, all black legs and black line down the frons - seen in the second photo.

August 2019 - the month of not many dragonflies for me. At least this darter brightened things up a bit

Yep that's better, now I can see ya!

Black Darter - Pair mating - nice to confirm breeding of the smallest UK Dragonfly on my regular patch today. Its only my second record of the species and the first time I have a confirmed pair on the site. Although these are classed as common , locally they are very few and far between ,with the only other guaranteed site I know is Risley Moss, so nice to see and photograph :)

Is this a Ruddy Darter or yet another Common Darter that's a different colour ?

My brain got scrambled when looking at Common Darters which seemed to be a whole host of different colours....reddish ones, yellowish ones and brownish ones.

Any help with identifying this one ?

Only really noticed this week how the male Black darters lower abdominal segments take on a reddish colour as they mature.

What a day

Mick found some shade while I chased Dragons and Damsels. The pond was so pretty. I saw some nice plants too. We left just after 1pm as it was getting furiously hot.

This shot made it into Explore! Thanks everybody :-)

Like most insect populations around our way, number of odonata are down this year. On our pond which by now should have tens of darters, I found just 5. This male was jealously guarding its patch.

This species is smaller than the Common Darter. The legs are entirely black. An intense orange colouration can be seen only at the very base of the wings.

The pterostigma is brown. There are usually two prominent black marks on S8 and S9.

Flight period: June to October.

Female: ochre yellow abdomen and thorax. There is no red panel on the side of the thorax.

Older females may develop some red along the midline and segment boundaries of the abdomen.

Inhabits weedy ponds and ditches, frequently in woodland.

Sadly I didn't spot a male anywhere nearby!

A female Common Darter, I think. They differ from the Ruddy Darter in having a pale stripe down the legs. It was fairly easy to get close to these smaller species but not the Emperors or Brown Hawkers. We also saw Demoiselles, slow flying and large Damselflies. I love the wings of Dragonflies, their clarity and patterning amaze me.

The Oriental darter or Indian darter is a water bird of tropical South Asia and Southeast Asia. It has a long and slender neck with a straight, pointed bill and, like the cormorant, it hunts for fish while its body is submerged in water.

Scientific name: Anhinga melanogaster

Anhingidae (Anhinga novaehollandiae)

On a helicopter flight, we flew out over where the Dart River empties into the Wakatipu lake in Glenorchy. I don't know about you, but I'm mesmerized by the patterns these deltas make. I'd love to see a time-lapse over the past 50,000 years of how it has changed. I wonder if there is a computer simulation out there that shows it.

I think, rather than the Common Darter. Testing out the macro capabilities of the 70-300 - reducing the MFD with an extension tube.
