In November 1997, a westbound BNSF manifest has just bounced over the diamond with Union Pacific's Modoc Line at Stronghold, California. The four upper quadrant semaphores installed by Great Northern to protect the crossing were in their last months of active use before their replacement and removal. To the best of my knowledge, they were the last semaphores in service on a Class I mainline in the state of California.
The late summer wildflowers are getting into full blossom, as Wisconsin & Southern train T4 trundles out of the southern Kettle Moraine and into the glacial drumlin area of Wisconsin.
