The dark-eyed junco is a species of the juncos, a genus of small grayish American sparrows. This bird is common across much of temperate North America and in summer ranges far into the Arctic. It is a very variable species, much like the related fox sparrow, and its systematics are still not completely untangled.
Yesterday we had a female Junco. Today here's a male, perched in the same bush. A male Dark-eye Junco (Junco hyemali)
Found this very tiny but chunky bird hopping around our neighbourhood's unkempt lawns for 2 days, first thinking he could not fly, maybe he was injured. Eventually I took this shot in front of our apartment building.
Checking on the species, I also saw a similar shot listed as an Oregon Dark Eyed Junco bird. He really was very cute, much more so than many birds I normally see here in our very urban neighbourhood; he really had these great colours. Of course I was happy he was OK and that this hopping around is looking for seeds, not due to an injury.
The birds at this location were on high alert with all the raptors hanging around. Tough getting one in the open.

A row of buildings in Luebeck, a town in North Germany. I read that these were used for salt storage. I took the buildings (3 or 4 pictures) on a gloomy afternoon 4 years ago and stitched them together. I had in mind to just use the buildings and have the already washed out sky brilliantly white. But I never liked that look and the buildings always seemed askew. One day I realized that it was not about my image, they really were askew. And then I played around with my trusted presets in LR and now I began to like what I saw. I also added texture and fake snow. No white sky now, much better.
We set out this day to find some White-crowned Sparrows. We did hear a lot of them, but not many shots. The Juncos stole the show though.

The swampy wetland of Smuggler Cove is strewn with dormant trees. Standing on the boardwalk overlooking this wetland gives one an eerie look into what might lie below the surface. And on this occasion, the weather quickly changed with a storm front beginning to brew.
My location gave me an ideal vantage point to catch the weather change and also see the dark shadows left from the remaining light. Together, they left a unique signature.
