Doesn't look best viewed large on black as it was processed for the original to be viewed fullscreen.

At Davidson College, the entire campus has been designated "the arboretum" and it serves as a collection of trees that flourish in the Piedmont section of North Carolina.

If you view a map of this place (upper right corner of page) and set it on "hybrid", you will get an idea of the numerous trees here.

Another post from Illinois Canyon and back to my usual type of shot. This was a gorgeous hike and Patient Husband consented to come along this time. I can walk, and walk, and walk but Patient Husband doesn't like it much. This really needed a figure in it to give an idea of scale so I'm glad he was there with his signature Tilley hat and walking stick. Also, it helps to have someone along who can find the car when we're done.

Path along the embankment on the Seine in Paris, the lighting and the wall provided a lovely perspective and the pedestrians added depth

A Mute swan glides effortlessly on the River Witham near Grantham, Lincolnshire. It is in just the right spot here to catch it in its environment surroiunded by plants and trees.

I went up to Gibside yesterday, primarily in my role as photographer for Mrs NB in her birdwatching quest. As it was during the afternoon the light was really too intense for any decent landscapes, however on walking through the woods I loved the way the light was filtering through the trees onto this pile of felled trees.

Taken with the sun high above and very cloudy which softened the light considerably. The splash of light moved fast over the hills adding drama to a long deserted old farm house. I pano'ed it to emphasise the open space feeling of the land. Sharpitor & Leather Tor are in the centre distance and Gutter Tor in the shadows on the left.

Thanks be to Richie who guided me here.

Taken from an office that was across the street. The dappled light is cool. It's from the reflections off the windows of the building I am standing in.

Another from Exbury Gardens.

What this scene needs is a fair maiden with long flowing hair, a long flowing white dress and a floppy hat sat against the trunk of the tree, but the only one I had available wasn't wearing a dress at the time!

Monday, 5/4/09:

They enjoy the serenity. This couple spent all afternoon sitting on all the benches in the garden while people watching. They were so content in their quiet time together.

A single snowdrop blossom, taken from below, in dappled sunlight.

A jaguar (Panthera onca) stands still in the undergrowth, its rosette-like coat catching the last speckled light. I shot at eye level to emphasize the feline's presence, while allowing the surrounding vegetation and dead leaves to frame the scene.

Photo notes:

Long telephoto lens at a respectful distance; wide aperture to blur the busy background and distinguish the jaguar; 1/640–1/1000 s to freeze subtle head movements; auto ISO with a ceiling around ISO 3200 to manage the dim forest light; single-shot AF-C on the near eye. In post-production, I applied selective brightening to enhance the face, slight noise reduction for deep shadows, and a warm color balance to preserve the late-afternoon mood. Field ethics: no harassment, animal completely free; Photograph in a quiet environment to minimize disturbance.

(vacation set: 11/12)

We woke up at home on a Sunday morning, having driven 20 hours the day before. Our vacation was cut 2 days short. We were both saddened by this, so on a whim, I said, "Hey, let's drive to Fort Custer, camp there, then spend the next day at the Dunes." We both raced out of bed, into the shower, and grabbed breakfast. So we got one more good day of camping in another beautiful state park. This photo is of the top of our trusty little tent.

I'm going to get to photograph many different Ferraris at the Ferrari Club of America Ottawa Chapter's 2009 Ottawa Ferrari Festival in a few weeks (June 19th to the 21st), but I got a nice "sneak preview" of what's to come when I spotted this Ferrari Mondial t parked in the shade of a tree just off Preston Street.

In the gardens at Wollaton park, there are lovely areas to stroll through next to the tall Cedar trees.

New life amongst the departed

This scene is not far from the car park. I love the rich green grass changing to ground ivy decorated with fallen Horse chestnut leaves that are then lit up in dappled sunlight with the lighting beyond.

The Old Jewish Cemetery lies in the Josefov, the Jewish Quarter of Prague. It has been estimated that there are approximately 12,000 tombstones presently visible and there may be as many as 100,000 burials in all. It was a moving and eerie place, surrounded by trees.

I have had to work on this picture big time as the contrast was so severe! An owl is carved in this glade. This section of woodland has some nice yew trees that really block out the light.

I have taken this shot near Whinstone Lee Tor at around 400 metres in altitude. There are some lovely details. I particularly like the break in the line of conifers on the col between the two high parts of Crook hill with the Kinder scout plateaux beckoning in the hazy distance.

The Courts is an early Georgian mansion built in the baroque style. It was described as newly-built in 1731 when it and adjacent dyehouse and workshops belonged to the clothier John Phelps. At the end of the 18th century a woollen cloth factory was built there, but all the industrial works were demolished a century later..

The Courts Garden, HoltThe Courts Gardens were initially designed by Dr [later Sir] George Hastings 1902-1905. Much of what can be seen today was planted by Major Clarence and Lady Cecilie Goff between 1921 and 1943, when he gave it and the house to the National Trust.

Woodrush, caught here under a mid-morning spotlight at Dunnottar Woods. The lighting was truly magical at the time, transforming the fairly mundane scenery and subjects of the woodland floor into a wonderland of colour, texture, shadow and light.
